Meet and greet UK's top jockey at York again
YORK Under Jockeys Orders, a new initiative to give racegoers and TV viewers a closer look at Britain's leading flat jockeys is back for York's Sky Bet Ebor Festival from Aug 20 to 23 next week and will, for the first time, be happening every day of the meeting. The initiative involves a raft of jockey-centric activities which give unprecedented access to the sport's stars in the saddle with the aim of engaging, entertaining and educating racing fans. "It was great to be part of it last year as racegoers and viewers seemed to really enjoy it, so I'll certainly be supporting it again in 2025," said Ryan Moore, one of the world's leading jockeys. "Racing, like other sports, needs to get closer to its fans." The four-time Longines World's Best Jockey is bound to be hounded alongside fellow top UK jockeys William Buick, Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand at autograph-signing sessions across those four days. Marquand, who has done countless media interviews, will also face a slightly different set of questions but no less challenging at a pre-recorded Q&A session with children. The 27-year-old, who is Doyle's husband, is not a father yet, but will certainly get some early practice. He will be joined by fellow gun hoops Rossa Ryan and Clifford Lee in a "grilling" by children of Clifton Green Primary School, York's Community Partner over probing questions such as, "Who's your best friend in the Weighing Room?" More light-hearted exchanges will also dig up the other lesser-known side of jockeys such as their musical tastes as "disc" jockeys, especially what is on their playlist when they drive to the races. Fans will then get a chance to take a peek into the family albums of several top jockeys to see childhood photos of their very early days in the saddle. Other activities at the Ebor Festival to bring racegoers closer to the human athletes at the centre of the sport include a best-dressed jockey award and distribution of photo lapel stickers of their favourite jockeys. Under Jockeys Orders is an award-winning campaign and collaboration between the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) and York Racecourse which started in 2024 to celebrate the skills of Britain's leading professional riders. "It was a pleasure partnering with York on this initiative last year and we're delighted that it will be even bigger and better this year," said Dale Gibson, racing director of the PJA and the rider of over 500 winners. "We're also grateful to our jockeys, valets and others for supporting the idea.'' One distinctive feature that was well appreciated at the inaugural edition and will be repeated again was carrying the jockeys' surnames on the back of their breeches to make it easier to identify the top jockeys. "Last year, we received a very positive reaction from racegoers to Under Jockeys Orders on Coolmore Nunthorpe day," said William Derby, York Racecourse chief executive and clerk of the course. "So we were keen to expand the initiative to all four days of our Ebor Festival so many more racing fans could become involved. "The jockeys have been fantastic to work with and we are very appreciative to them and the PJA in bringing this initiative to life and helping us showcase the human stars of our sport." Their four-legged counterparts will by no means take a back seat during the Ebor Festival, highlighted by the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes (Aug 20), Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks (Aug 21), Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes (Aug 22) and Group 2 York Stakes (Aug 23). All four days are part of the UK cards offered by Singapore Pools. The crown jewel is undoubtedly the £1.25 million (S$2.16 million) International Stakes (2,063m) even if it was robbed of some gloss with Field Of Gold opting out. It has still drawn big names both on the domestic scene such as Aidan O'Brien's Delacroix and top fillies Whirl and Minnie Hauk, Godolphin's Ombudsman as well as on the global stage like Japan's Dubai Sheema Classic winner Danon Decile and France's unbeaten Daryz.
