MoHaP completes heat exhaustion awareness drive in Sharjah
Now in its 14th edition, the campaign is held under the slogan "Your Safety is Our Goal." It focuses on educating workers about the dangers of heat exhaustion and how to prevent it, emphasizing the importance of proper health practices during the peak heat season. The initiative is part of national efforts to raise awareness and safeguard workers from extreme weather risks.
Reaching thousands of workers across the Emirate
The campaign has reached thousands of workers at key locations across Sharjah, including various cultural and sports clubs and centers in areas such as Sharjah city, Al Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, Kalba, Khorfakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn. Awareness activities at these sites included lectures on the risks of heat exhaustion, first aid demonstrations, field medical check-ups, and the distribution of protective items to help workers stay safe in the heat. Additional awareness events are ongoing at other locations, including the Sharjah Cement Factory and Al Qasimia University Theatre.
Expanded field visits and inclusive outreach
In addition to scheduled events, the campaign included field visits where health professionals educated workers on health procedures and advised employers at construction sites and factories about the importance of preventive measures. For the first time, the campaign also included new target groups such as cleaners, gas station workers, public park and parking staff, delivery personnel, and female workers. These groups were provided with vital information on how to minimise their exposure to heat and prevent exhaustion.
Enhancing public health and quality of life
Mohammed Abdullah Al Zarouni, Director of the Ministry's Representative Office in Sharjah, emphasised that completing these awareness stations marks a vital step in the country's broader strategy to protect worker health. He noted that the campaign reflects the UAE's commitment to human welfare and public health, aligning with global health standards and the values of the Year of Community. Al Zarouni highlighted that the initiative fosters a collaborative spirit among institutions and contributes to creating a safe, healthy work environment.
Focus on worker empowerment and safety
The Health Education Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs stated that the campaign underscores the importance of empowering workers with the knowledge to adopt healthy practices. Al Zarouni further stressed the need for hydration, proper clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight, pointing out that continued teamwork among partners is essential to achieving the campaign's health and safety goals.
Wide-ranging institutional support
The campaign was carried out in partnership with numerous national and local organizations. These include ministries, health service providers, police, municipal departments, media bureaus, charitable foundations, hospitals, pharmacies, and private companies. Their collective efforts demonstrate a unified commitment to enhancing public health, ensuring worker safety, and improving the overall quality of life in the UAE.

Kuwait says 23 people dead from alcohol poisoning
Kuwait says 23 people have been killed by contaminated alcohol in the past week, with dozens more in intensive care. The Kuwaiti health ministry said 160 people had come down with methanol poisoning since Saturday. Most were Asians. Most needed urgent treatment involving mechanical breathing and kidney dialysis. Methanol is an industrial substance not meant for human consumption, but sometimes finds its way into home-made or counterfeit drinks. "The Ministry of Health warns and urges the public to avoid such behaviour to preserve lives," it said. It said there was a "continuous medical and security follow-up around the clock". An earlier ministry report on Wednesday said 21 people had suffered blindness or visual impairment due to the poisoning. India 's embassy in Kuwait said on Wednesday that about 40 Indians had been taken to hospital in recent days, some of whom had died. It did not give the reason for their sickness. The embassy said it was "following up with concerned hospitals" and the health ministry to ensure "proper treatment of Indian patients". Nine people died in Jordan in a case of mass alcohol poisoning in June, in which 47 people needed treatment. The case was referred to a criminal court.

MoHAP Strengthens Ties with Private Hospitals to Advance National Newborn Screening Programme
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has held a coordination meeting with private hospital representatives to enhance the national newborn screening programme, ensuring it meets the UAE's approved national standards in line with federal health legislation. The initiative reflects MoHAP's commitment to proactive healthcare and the highest standards in preventive services. The programme, implemented under a UAE Cabinet Resolution on newborn medical screening, follows strict procedures, standards, and regulatory frameworks defined by the Health Regulation Sector. These include accuracy monitoring, comprehensive clinical and biochemical assessments, and the early detection of genetic, hereditary, and other health conditions. 'Riayati,' the digital healthcare platform for the National Unified Medical Record (NUMR), plays a key role in the initiative by providing an integrated database for automation, health data management, and real-time patient record access. The system enhances patient safety, improves efficiency, and supports informed clinical decision-making. The meeting covered strategic themes, including detailed reviews of protocols for newborn screenings, follow-ups, hearing tests, and detection of critical congenital heart defects. It also addressed circulars issued by the Health Regulation Sector to ensure consistent application of screening protocols across public and private facilities. MoHAP underlined that the programme operates through a unified network of hospitals nationwide, supported by specialised reference laboratories, to establish a standardised approach for early detection and prevention of complications. Safeguarding newborn health remains a strategic national priority, the Ministry stressed, aligning preventive and therapeutic services with global best practices. The Ministry also highlighted the critical role of private hospitals as strategic partners in achieving national healthcare objectives, emphasising ongoing coordination and knowledge exchange to build a resilient and integrated health system. Newborn screening involves collecting blood samples for biochemical testing at the National Reference Laboratory, alongside hearing assessments and cardiac examinations. Additional tests may be introduced in line with evolving international medical standards. News Source: Emirates News Agency
