Mike Vrabel gives cryptic response on Stefon Diggs' absence in Patriots' preseason opener
Diggs has been a full go at training camp, despite having torn his ACL during Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season. So, why was he not playing in the game?
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked that exact question during a Monday morning interview on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show. Specifically, he was asked if it was more of a precautionary move.
But Vrabel didn't give anything away.
'Coach's decision,' he simply responded.
It makes sense why the Patriots would want to err on the side of caution with Diggs, considering his previous injury. But, he was back on the field and was a full participant in Monday's practice before New England travels to Minnesota for its second preseason game against the Vikings.

NBA approves sale of Boston Celtics to private equity mogul Bill Chisholm for record $6.1 billion
BOSTON (AP) — The NBA on Wednesday unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by private equity mogul Bill Chisholm, a deal that values the franchise at more than $6.1 billion — the largest ever for an American professional sports team. The league said the transaction is expected to close shortly. When it does, Chisholm will take ownership of at least 51% of the team, with full control coming by 2028 at a price that could bring the total value to $7.3 billion. The previous record for a U.S. sports franchise was the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023. The record price for an NBA team was the $4 billion mortgage firm owner Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2023. A Massachusetts native and graduate of Dartmouth College and Penn's Wharton School of business, Chisholm is the managing partner of California-based Symphony Technology Group. The new ownership group also includes Boston businessmen Rob Hale, who is a current Celtics shareholder, and Bruce Beal Jr. Wyc Grousbeck led the ownership group that bought the team in 2002 for $360 million and presided over NBA championships in 2008 and '24. The franchise's 18 NBA titles is a record. Chisholm outbid at least two other groups, one led by previous Celtics minority partner Steve Pagliuca. 5 standouts from Day 1 of Patriots' joint practices with Vikings
There was no doubt that the New England Patriots would face their toughest test of the preseason when traveling to Eagan for joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings. And that difficulty lived up to the hype on Wednesday. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, a former longtime Patriots coach, brought the heat at practice, challenging the two rookie offensive linemen, Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, and putting constant pressure on quarterback Drake Maye. It was a physical practice that forced the Patriots to step up their game, which is exactly what the coaches want in this kind of setting. On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots got some big wins along the defensive front, forcing multiple sacks and an interception in 11-on-11s. Here are the 5 standout Patriots players from Day 1 of the joint practice with the Vikings: QB Drake Maye The offensive line struggles could have turned this into an ugly practice for Drake Maye, but the Patriots' second-year quarterback handled himself well against an aggressive Vikings' defensive front. He completed two long touchdown passes to veteran wideout Mack Hollins and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson. When the offensive line stood its ground, Maye was cooking under center. RB TreVeyon Henderson With Rhamondre Stevenson sidelined with an injury, the Patriots continued to make TreVeyon Henderson the focal point. The rookie running back had the play of the day with a 70-yard touchdown reception on a wheel route. He hauled in a pass from Drake Maye and sped down the sideline past defenders for six points. WR Mack Hollins Mack Hollins hauled in a long touchdown pass on what looked like a blown coverage by the Vikings' defense. It was a head-up play by the veteran wideout that resulted in six points for the Patriots. Hollins is a savvy player capable of making big plays at any given moment. He fits well in a Patriots offense that isn't afraid to push the ball downfield. CB Marcus Jones The lone interception by the Vikings came on a pass attempt from second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. It looked like an overthrown pass intended for Vikings wideout Jalen Nailor. Patriots corner Marcus Jones succeeded in making the diving grab and then running the ball in the other direction for a large chunk of yards. WR Kayshon Boutte Patriots wideout Kayshon Boutte had a couple of nice catches in the competitive team periods. On one play, Boutte laid out for a beautiful sideline pass while keeping his toes in bounds. Drake Maye also dropped a dime over a defender to Boutte while being pressured by multiple defenders.
