Dubai's JA Resorts & Hotels makes UK debut with two heritage properties in Scotland

The Nationala day ago
Dubai's JA Resorts & Hotels has taken over the management of two heritage hotels in Scotland, marking the homegrown hospitality brand's entry into the UK.
The first property, Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort, is a historic 97-hectare estate outside Glasgow, while The Bruntsfield is a boutique hotel in the heart of Edinburgh.
Part of the prestigious Dutco Group, JA Resorts & Hotels operates hotels across Dubai and in the Maldives, including some of the oldest hotels in the UAE – JA Hatta Fort Hotel and JA Beach Hotel, which opened in 1981.
Originally designed and built in 1828 by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of London's British Museum, Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort is a historic five-star hotel set within a 97-hectare estate on the banks of the River Clyde. Dutco Group acquired the property last year and officially re-opened it in May following a £25 million ($33.6 million) refurbishment.
The resort features 74 restored guest rooms and suites, two restaurants, two bars, as well as a 22-seater private cinema, gaming room and billiards room.
The Bruntsfield, meanwhile, is located in Edinburgh's historic city centre and is a short walk from landmarks such as the Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Princes Street Gardens.
The boutique hotel was originally built as a Baronial-style residence on Borough Muir in 1861. The property underwent an extensive £1 million refurbishment in 2022, and was acquired by the Dutco Group last year.
It features 72 rooms, a restaurant and bar, a heated secret garden, as well as spacious event facilities. The hotel holds a Gold Green Tourism accreditation for its focus on sustainability.
'Our journey as a brand has been both dynamic and deeply personal. Since opening JA Hatta Fort Hotel and JA Beach Hotel in 1981, we've proudly evolved – not just in our properties, but in the scope and spirit of the company itself," said Ahmed Baker, the chairman of Dutco Group.
"As a homegrown brand rooted in Dubai's hospitality heritage, it is especially meaningful to see our growth extend internationally in ways that remain true to who we are.'

'Crazy Game': Grant Forrest's home soil triumph, Trump call, and season turnaround

Scotland's Grant Forrest sealed his second DP World Tour title at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, calling golf 'a crazy game' after a season-saving victory, capped by a congratulatory FaceTime from course owner and U.S. President Donald Trump. 'It's a crazy game,' Forrest said, shaking his head in disbelief after lifting the Nexo Championship trophy on home turf at Trump International Golf Links. - The 32-year-old Scot's second DP World Tour victory came in front of family, friends, and a raucous local crowd, and was followed by a FaceTime call from none other than the course's owner, U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump, calling from his course near Washington D.C., told Forrest, 'I have very good players, but they're not like you, Grant. We all watched you play. What a round of golf. 'That course is big, it's strong and tough. Your swing is great. And it's a great honour you won.' Trump said on the DP World Tour website. Forrest's win, sealed despite a double bogey on the 18th, vaulted him up the Race to Dubai rankings, secured his DP World Tour card for next season, and put him at the top of the Closing Swing Rankings with a shot at a $200,000 bonus if he stays there after next week's Danish Golf Championship. 'It's amazing, just speechless,' Forrest said. 'One week can turn things around, and it sure has. .Tough day today, didn't have my best at all, a lot of good par saves on the front nine, and I was pretty nervous down the last, but yeah, can't believe it. "It's been such a tough year on the course; it's a crazy game that you can come out and do this,' he added. "I was way down the rankings heading into this week, and while I had started to play a bit better, I was very much on the bubble. "But one week can turn things around, and it sure has." The victory came exactly four years after his first tour win at the 2021 Hero Open in St Andrews, further cementing his reputation for delivering big moments in Scotland. He also pocketed a $10,000 bonus for setting the course record, a six-under 66 on Friday. Forrest now heads to Denmark with momentum, confidence, and the knowledge that in golf, fortunes can change fast.

Tesla applies for UK electricity supply license

Tesla, Elon Musk's electric car and energy company, has applied for a licence to supply electricity to British homes. If approved by the energy watchdog Ofgem, it would allow Tesla to take on the big firms that dominate the UK energy market to provide electricity to households and businesses in England, Scotland and Wales as soon as next year. Tesla, which is best known as one of the world's biggest makers of electric vehicles (EV), also has a solar energy and battery storage business. Tesla did not immediately reply to a BBC request for comment. Ofgem can take up to nine months to process applications for energy supply licences. Tesla Electric already operates a power supplier in Texas that allows owners of its EVs to charge their cars cheaply and pays them for feeding surplus electricity back to the grid. The application, which was signed by Andrew Payne who runs Tesla's European energy operations, was filed late last month. Tesla has sold more than a quarter of a million EVs and tens of thousands of home storage batteries in the UK, which could help it gain access to a sizeable customer base for an electricity supply business. The Ofgem licence application comes as Tesla's EV sales have fallen across Europe in recent months. In July, UK car registrations of Teslas fell by almost 60% and by more than 55% in Germany, industry data showed. That took the firm's sales decline in the month to 45% in 10 key European markets. Tesla has faced tough competition from rival EV makers, especially China's BYD. Musk has also been criticised for his relationship with US President Donald Trump, although the two have now very publicly fallen out. His involvement in right-wing politics in the UK, Germany and Italy, meanwhile, has drawn ire from some of Tesla's customers. Source: BBC News Image Credit: Tesla
