Egypt, Eritrea reiterate rejection of non-littoral nation's involvement in Red Sea security, governance - Foreign Affairs
According to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry on Saturday, Abdelatty and Afwerki made these remarks following a discussion between the two sides on the latest developments in the region.
The statement read that Abdelatty visited Eritrea on Friday to discuss ways to activate the tripartite coordination mechanism between Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia.
Formed after a summit that brought together the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on 10 October 2024, the tripartite ministerial committee held its first meeting in Cairo in January.
Following that meeting, Abdelatty emphasised in a joint press conference with Eritrean and Somali counterparts that no military or naval presence of any non-littoral state in the Red Sea would be accepted.
Egypt and Eritrea have repeatedly rejected all foreign interference in Somalian affairs and declared their support for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In recent months, tensions have increased in the Horn of Africa after Somaliland, a breakaway entity from Somalia not recognised by any country, agreed to lease 20 kilometres of its coast for 50 years to landlocked Ethiopia to build a naval base in return for diplomatic recognition.
In January, Turkey mediated a peace deal between Somalia and Ethiopia that included restoring full diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Following the rapprochement, Ethiopia's deal with Somaliland remains uncertain.
During Friday's meeting, Abdelatty and Afwerki discussed preparations for the tripartite ministerial committee's second meeting, which will be held in the Eritrean capital.
They also exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest and ways to support peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
In addition, the two sides discussed supporting Somalia in combating terrorism, the latest developments in Sudan, and the situation in Libya and the Sahel region of Africa.
They also discussed Red Sea security and governance.
Moreover, Abdelatty discussed strengthening relations between Egypt and Eritrea, delivering a verbal message from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to the Eritrean president.
Afwerki, for his part, said his country looks forward to promoting ties with Egypt in ways that meet both countries' aspirations and reflect their historical ties.

Expat voting concludes in Egypt's 2025 Senate election as ballot count begins - Foreign Affairs
Expat voting in Egypt's 2025 Senate election has concluded, with polling stations closing across most countries after two days of balloting. The overseas vote was conducted at 136 polling stations in Egyptian embassies and consulates across 117 countries, and the ballot counting is now underway. Due to time zone differences, the Egyptian Embassy in New Zealand was the first to close its polls at 12 pm local time on Sunday, while the final station, located in Los Angeles, is set to conclude voting by Monday morning. Following the vote, each committee will count ballots for individual candidates and party lists. The results, along with voter registers and any submitted appeals, will be sent via diplomatic pouch to the foreign ministry. The ministry will then forward them to the central committee for overseas voting. This committee will compile a final report to be included in the national tally. Domestic voting is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday, 4–5 August, according to the National Elections Authority (NEA). Results from the first round are expected to be announced on 12 August. The Senate, Egypt's upper chamber of parliament, serves a consultative role, with legislative authority residing in the House of Representatives. The 300-member Senate is composed of three equal parts: one-third elected via individual candidacy, one-third through closed party lists, and one-third appointed by the president. Women must hold at least 10 percent of the seats. Members serve five-year terms. In the individual seat system, a candidate must secure an absolute majority of valid votes to win. If no candidate achieves this, a runoff is held between the top two contenders. For list-based elections, the winning list must also secure an absolute majority. If this is not achieved, a runoff is held between the top two lists, with the one receiving the most valid votes winning. In the case of a single-candidate list, such as the National Unified List in this election, that list must obtain at least five percent of registered votes in its constituency to win. If a runoff is required, campaigning will resume on the same day the first-round results are announced, the NEA said. Appeals against the NEA's decision must be filed within 48 hours, with the final deadline on 14 August. Runoff voting for expats is scheduled for 25–26 August, followed by domestic runoff voting on 27–28 August. Final results from the runoff round are expected to be announced on 4 September. . Taarek Refaat Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler announced her resignation on Friday, creating a key vacancy just as President Donald Trump intensifies his push for steep interest rate cuts, in a rare and highly publicized rift within the U.S. central bank. The President nominates all members of the Fed's Board of Governors, subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
