Water and Sanitation Dept says not responsible for delays in Lesotho Highlands Water Project
JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Water and Sanitation says it is not responsible for the delays in reactivating the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP).
The tunnel, which had been undergoing maintenance since October last year, was not restored to operation by its scheduled deadline at the end of March.
Its main function is to transport over 700 million cubic meters of water annually from Lesotho to at least five South African provinces to ensure water security in the region.
The tunnel was finally brought back online on Sunday.
Over the past seven months, the department, in collaboration with its Lesotho counterpart, has been meticulously carrying out maintenance on the LHWP.

The 38-kilometre-long tunnel required a thorough inspection for surface cracks and corrosion. It was recoated using 43,000 litres of paint.
Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina said the work on the South African side was completed before the end of March, with delays occurring primarily on the Lesotho side.
"On the Lesotho side, they were not done. Their delays were caused by inclement weather and they requested an additional three weeks. We were patient with them because we also received heavy rain, so we had to allow them to do things in the correct manner."
The tunnel is now back in operation, transporting water from Lesotho into South Africa's Vaal River integrated system.

Weather: Snowfall on the horizon for Gauteng next week
Gauteng may experience snowfall next week as a cold front arrives. Vox Weather has forecast a possibility of snow in the province on Monday, with temperatures dropping into the mid-teens. 'As the cut-off low continues to develop and freezing levels drop further, light snow remains a possibility over the southern parts of Gauteng and the southern Highveld of Mpumalanga,' Vox Weather said as per The Citizen . The cold front will bring icy conditions, snow in some provinces, which include KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Gauteng, parts of Mpumalanga and the eastern parts of the North West. 'High-lying grounds of the Eastern Cape are expected to have disruptive snow. Scattered to widespread chance of rain and showers over KwaZulu-Natal as well as the Eastern Cape on Monday. If you'll be in Gauteng, you can expect a partly cloudy day, with a 30% chance of showers and cold temperatures that are expected, especially for the central, as well as the southern parts of the province,' said SA Forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela. While there is a possibility of snowfall on Monday in Gauteng, temperatures are expected to drop significantly on Tuesday and Wednesday, with some areas likely to experience subzero temperatures in the mornings. Severe weather, snow predicted for these parts of South Africa
There is expected to be some severe weather on its way to South Africa. Images: Canva Accoring to a media release from the South Africa Weather Service, a spell of 'extreme winter weather' is expected to hit the country this weekend, with snowfalls possible over all provinces, except Limpopo. In the coming days, a particularly intense cut-off low (COL) system, associated with severe winter weather, is expected to affect South Africa, persisting until at least the middle of next week over the eastern provinces. Some of the more extreme weather impacts associated with this system include the following: Snowfalls over almost every province, with the exception of Limpopo. Some of these snowfalls will be disruptive, affecting traffic flow over mountain passes (for example, the N3 at Van Reenen's pass). Strong, damaging surface winds over large parts of the interior provinces from Sunday, leading to an elevated risk of wildfires, especially over the central and eastern interior, ahead of the cold change. These extreme conditions are expected to persist over some of the eastern provinces until Wednesday. Strong to near-gale force coastal winds and very rough seas could be expected from Friday along the south-west coast, spreading to the south and east coasts during Saturday, and lasting until at least Tuesday along the east coast. Heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding and infrastructure damage over parts of the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior on Sunday, shifting to southern KZN on Monday. Bitterly cold daytime conditions over many provinces from Sunday, with maximum temperatures unlikely to exceed 10C°. These conditions will be exacerbated by strong, gusty winds.
