For more than ten years, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones carried a secret far from the bright lights of the NFL stage. The 82-year-old recently revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma back in 2010—a fight that involved multiple surgeries, experimental drugs, and a battle against steep odds.
His disclosure came after the Dallas Morning News picked up on a subtle reference in Netflix's upcoming America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, set to premiere Aug. 19.
Jerry Jones credits PD-1 therapy and elite medical care for survival
Jerry Jones said his life was saved by a groundbreaking immunotherapy drug known as PD-1, paired with expert medical care at Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center. 'I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy],' Jones told the Dallas Morning News.
'I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines. I now have no tumors.'

His journey was far from simple. Over the decade, Jones underwent two lung surgeries and two lymph node surgeries while navigating the emotional toll of a stage 4 diagnosis. According to the Melanoma Research Alliance, this is the most advanced stage, where cancer cells have spread beyond the skin to other parts of the body.
The American Cancer Society estimates that the five-year survival rate for stage 4 melanoma hovers around 35%, though recent drug advancements have significantly improved outcomes.
Jones' survival stands as a testament to how medical innovation can rewrite even the most daunting prognoses. Studies, such as one from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, now suggest survival rates for advanced cases can approach 50%—a leap forward that Jones experienced firsthand.
Cowboys documentary sheds light on hidden chapter of Jerry Jones' life
The revelation emerged from a surprising source—a Netflix docuseries chronicling the Cowboys' highs and lows during Jones' tenure. In the fifth episode, he drops a passing remark about undergoing cancer treatments 'about a dozen years ago.' That offhand comment prompted deeper questions from the Dallas Morning News, ultimately leading to his candid admission.
The series, filmed over two years with more than 40 hours of interviews, not only captures the legendary owner's business acumen but also the personal resilience that shaped him. In one memorable scene, Jones humorously recalls a doctor's advice to meditate on people who irritate him—starting with former coach Jimmy Johnson. 'I can't get past that first mother…,' he quips, underscoring how his trademark wit endured even in the face of illness.
Jerry Jones' story adds a new layer to his public legacy—one not defined solely by football trophies and franchise decisions, but by a battle fought in silence, and won with determination and grit.

August 15, 1929 hrs: Five years since MS Dhoni retired from international cricket but the legend still reigns in Yellow

It's been five years since MS Dhoni stunned the cricketing world by retiring from international cricket on August 15, 2020, during the COVID-19 hiatus. The decision left his passionate fans emotional, as many had hoped to see the legend finish his illustrious career on a high. His last outing in India colours came in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final, where he walked off in tears after being run out in a heartbreaking loss that ended India's campaign. He remained the only captain in international cricket to win all three ICC trophies: 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. The swashbuckling wicketkeeper batter was given the big role of captain for the first time in the 2007 T20 WC to lead a young side in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The low expectations from the Indian team worked in its favour as Dhoni led them to the title triumph with win over Pakistan. The 2007 final against Pakistan was the first instance where the cricket world truly witnessed Dhoni's tactical acumen, as he handed the ball to Joginder Sharma instead of the experienced Harbhajan Singh for the decisive last over. In 2011, he helped India win the ODI World Cup for the second time, ending a 28-year wait. Dhoni hit the winning run for India in the final as he finished off the match in style with a six as his unbeaten 91 earned him the Player of the Match in one of the most historical matches in Indian cricket history. Dhoni announced his international retirement in his trademark simple style with an Instagram post: 'Thanks a lot for your love and support… from 1929 hrs, consider me retired.' True to his nature, it was brief, clear, and without any grand send-off. The fact that it came on August 15, India's Independence Day, gave the moment extra significance. During his illustrious career, Dhoni represented India in 90 Tests, scoring 4,876 runs and six centuries. He quit the longest format in 2014. Meanwhile, in 350 ODIs, amassing 10,773 runs at an average of over 50, including 10 hundreds. In T20Is, he played 98 matches, scoring 1,617 runs. Renowned for his wicketkeeping, he claimed 634 catches and 195 stumpings across formats. MS Dhoni still going strong in IPL However, he has yet to announce his retirement from the IPL as he continues to represent Chennai Super Kings in the cash-rich league. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter has played in 278 IPL matches, amassing 5,439 runs at an average of 38.30. He has hammered 24 fifties, hit 237 sixes, and led CSK to five IPL titles, cementing his legacy.

Mike Vrabel plays peacemaker after Patriots and Vikings erupt in intense training camp fight

Mike Vrabel dives into Patriots-Vikings scuffle, showing trademark toughness (Getty Images) The competitive fire in New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was on full display during Thursday's joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings. What began as an ordinary preseason workout quickly escalated into a heated on-field confrontation — and Vrabel, never one to watch from the sidelines, threw himself right into the chaos. The 50-year-old coach ended up at the bottom of the pile but emerged unscathed, reinforcing his reputation as a fearless leader. Mike Vrabel jumps into the fray during joint practice The incident unfolded during the second practice session between the Patriots and Vikings ahead of their preseason clash at Gillette Stadium. While it's still unclear what initially sparked tensions, video from VikingzFanPage captured Vrabel charging into the scrum, determined to separate his players from their opponents. — vikingzfanpage (@vikingzfanpage) It wasn't his first time playing peacemaker under fire. Just last week, during a joint practice with the Washington Commanders, Vrabel walked away with a gash on his right cheek after breaking up another fight. Despite the risks, players have taken notice of his willingness to stand with them. Wide receiver DeMario Douglas praised the gesture, saying it shows 'a lot about our coach' and that 'He'll do anything for us. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bulurokeng: New Container Houses – Take A Look At The Prices! Toughness defines Mike Vrabel's coaching style Mike Vrabel's readiness to step into the middle of conflict reflects the same grit he displayed during his eight-year playing career with the Patriots, where he won three Super Bowls. After a successful run as Tennessee Titans head coach from 2018 to 2023 — marked by four winning seasons and multiple playoff appearances — Vrabel returned to Foxborough in January with the mission to restore a struggling franchise. Known as a quintessential 'football guy,' Vrabel has long built a culture where players feel protected and motivated. That presence was evident again on Thursday — not just in his words, but in his actions. If New England ever needed him to suit up again, it seems the former linebacker might still have a few snaps left in him.
