Paolini delights home crowd by reaching ‘dream' Italian Open final

Jasmine Paolini reached the Italian Open final yesterday after ending Peyton Stearns' impressive run in the Rome tournament 7-5, 6-1..
Home hope and sixth seed Paolini became the third Italian woman to reach the Foro Italico final, and the first since her doubles partner Sara Errani was thumped by Serena Williams in 2014.
The 29-year-old will face one of Coco Gauff and China's Zheng Qinwen, who beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday night, with that contest the last match of the day on centre court.
'It's a dream of mine to get to the final here. It was a difficult start, thank goodness you were all here to give me a boost,' Paolini said on court.
'I didn't have a great feeling at the beginning of the match but I'm really happy about how I managed to turn it around.'
Paolini was favourite to get past unseeded Stearns but early on her American opponent showed why she got to her first 1000 series semi-final by knocking out a succession of big names including Naomi Osaka and fifth seed Madison Keys.
Paolini looked way off the pace when she lost the first three games of the match in surprisingly timid fashion, serving weakly and mishitting a host of simple shots.
But she slowly began to force herself back into the contest, putting pressure on Stearns to find shots with her serving and finding both more power and accuracy on her forehand.
Stearns' frustration was clear to see after being broken to allow Paolini to serve for the set, lashing her racket into her bag before giving herself a telling off in her seat.

Swiatek, Sabalenka set Paris showdown

Swiatek, the fifth seed, got past 13th-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5 in Paris after top women's seed Sabalenka won a nervy quarter-final against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3. '(Aryna) has been having a great season so I'm not going to lie, it is going to be a tough match. But I'm happy for the challenge,' said Swiatek after reeling off her 26th win in a row at the French Open. Both players have shared the number one ranking between the m since April 2022. Sabalenka ended Swiatek's 11-month reign as world number one last October but the Pole leads 8-4 in their previous meetings. World number five Swiatek has been struggling for her best form and has not reached a final since winning the French Open title last year. But she gave Svitolina little opportunity on her favoured clay surface, breaking in the fourth game to ease through the first set. The pair exchanged consecutive breaks of serve early in the second set, before Swiatek forced the breakthrough at 5-5 with a powerful forehand down the line. ‘Sky's the limit' for Tiafoe at French Open
AFP | Paris Frances Tiafoe believes the 'sky's the limit' for him after reaching the French Open quarter-finals for the first time on Sunday. The American downed German world number 66 Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the last 16 to set up a match with Lorenzo Musetti for a semi-final place. It will be Tiafoe's first ATP quarter-final since finishing runner-up at a low-key event in Houston in March. 'It's been horrible. I've been travelling around, and it hasn't been fun at all,' he said. 'Kind of faced it. After that it gave me space to just play. You know, when I can play, I can play. This is not really something that's like a shock. 'When I'm playing well, I'm there and present and having fun, I think the sky's the limit for me.'
