Amid heightened trade tensions, with US President Donald Trump imposing a total 50 per cent tariff and penalty on Indian goods, questions arose in Parliament over the treatment of illegal Indian immigrants in the US.
On August 1, the DMK's K Kanimozhi asked in the Lok Sabha whether the government had taken steps to ensure humane treatment for deported Indians.
The Ministry of External Affairs said it continues to engage with Washington to safeguard deportees' rights, raising concerns over shackles, especially for women and children, and urging respect for religious and cultural practices.
The MEA noted no complaints since February

Sports Bill not an intervention from the government: Mandaviya

New Delhi: The National Sports Governance Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Aimed at bringing reforms in sports administration and making sports bodies transparent, the bill was cleared by the Lok Sabha on Monday and all set to be notified as an act. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi. (Sansad TV) This is the first time that a legislation on sports has been framed in the country. Until now, the National Sports Code, 2011, along with various court orders on good governance, provided the legal framework for the national sports federations, IOA and other sports bodies to follow. However, it has long been felt that a single, comprehensive law, binding on all sports federations, is needed to streamline governance and bring transparency. The bill has divided opinions. Critics of the National Sports Governance bill have pointed out that the legislation is an attempt by the government to take 'control' of the sports federations which are 'autonomous' bodies and owe their allegiance to international sports federations and Olympic charter. Another fear expressed by some experts is that provisions of the bill like relaxing age and tenure restrictions of officials, will throw water on years of 'good governance' practices the top courts of the country have imposed on the federations. The NSFs get the majority of their funds from the government and that makes them answerable. Despite guidelines and directives of good practices, transparency and ethics enshrined in the Sports Code and court orders, federations are still not run professionally. Litigations related to elections, administrative wrongdoings, and even selection matters -- especially during major international events -- are so common that it has hampered governance of federations, eventually impacting athletes and India's chances. Allaying apprehension of government's interference in federation matters, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the upper house that the intention through this bill is to play a 'supportive role' so that Indian athletes can perform to their true potential and enhance the country's performance at the international level. 'Government has no intention to interfere in the functioning of sports federations. The National Sports Board (which will register sports bodies) will operate in an independent manner. All disputes will be taken up by the National Sports Tribunal and when elections happen in federations, the National Sports Election Panel will do a transparent election. There will be no intervention from the government,' said Mandaviya. The sports federations will have to align their constitution as per the legislation. 'This bill will usher in transparency, accountability, and gender parity. It will empower athletes and build confidence among sponsors and federations. It is about justice and fair-play,' said Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, a Rajya Sabha member, during discussion on the bill. Usha said the bill will give a push to India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. 'This legislation comes at a time when India is dreaming big, dreaming for its rightful share in the global sporting fraternity by hosting the 2036 Olympics. It is a clarion call for action,' she said. 'This bill is a critical pillar of a grand vision. Let us see this as a moral promise, a promise that athletes will no longer be let down by an apathetic system,' she said. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh felt this would lead to 'extreme centralisation'. 'The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 was bulldozed through the Lok Sabha yesterday (on Monday and will perhaps be subject to the same treatment in the Rajya Sabha today,' he said on X. 'The Bill will result in the extreme centralisation of sports administration. And, of course, the BCCI will get the most favoured treatment, not subject to any laws of the land like the RTI.' The challenge will be to implement the provisions in states and district level with sports being part of the state subject. All affiliate units of national sports bodies also have to be registered with the Board.

Rajanna's sacking sparks uproar in assembly

Bengaluru: The decision to remove KN Rajanna from Siddaramaiah's council of ministers triggered an uproar in the legislative assembly Tuesday, with the opposition BJP demanding reasons for his dismissal. The cooperation minister was dropped following directions from Congress' high command, reportedly over his remarks questioning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's votes theft allegations during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The govt avoided a debate by tabling the notification on Rajanna's exit after Question Hour. HK Patil, law and parliamentary affairs minister who tabled the notification, said: "As per rules, if any minister leaves the council of ministers, he or she may make a statement with the speaker's permission, but beyond that, no discussion or explanation can be allowed." But Patil argued that ministerial exits were not discussed in the House earlier. "For example when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as vice-president, was there discussion on that?" he asked. BJP members countered saying a resignation is different from being sacked. Bellad asked, "What was Rajanna's mistake, people of the state should know…Was he removed for speaking the truth?" Minister Priyank Kharge retorted, "Should your permission be sought for removing a minister? Meanwhile, in Madhugiri, the constituency in Tumakuru district which Rajanna represents, witnessed tension Tuesday as supporters of the sacked minister protested his removal from the cabinet. Led by corporator Girija Manjunath, who resigned from Madhugiri's municipality, protesters marched through the town with banners and blasting slogans over loudspeakers. They condemned the Congress high command and demanded justice for Rajanna. The agitation escalated into a bandh call and shopkeepers were forced to close establishments. Most shops and stalls remained shut for the day, but those that stayed open faced protesters' ire. Police attempts to calm the crowd failed, and some shops were damaged while owners and staff were manhandled. Effigies were hung in front of shops that stayed open. A man also attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol on himself but was stopped by police. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 1 2 Trichy: The Supreme Court's direction to remove stray dogs from streets and keep them in shelters will be implemented across Tamil Nadu, municipal administration minister K N Nehru said in Trichy on Tuesday. Replying to questions from reporters after launching Chief Minister's Thayumanavar scheme, he said there won't be any necessity to release dogs after vaccinating and sterilising them. "Dog bite menace is becoming worrisome for us. This is a good opportunity for us. We will implement theorder in the corporations and across the state," he said. The minister particularly welcomed the part of the order that allows animal activists to be prosecuted for obstructing the drive. "They have given an excellent order," he added. To a question on the demand by protesting corporation sanitary workers in Chennai that Nehru should meet them, instead of HR&CE minister Sekarbabu, he said, "I had met and talked to the representatives for four days. At least 300 have returned to work." He denied that existing workers are being replaced by those from northern states. "We are removing the waste with the existing workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Foods for Spine Health: Foods That Fight Back Pain Learn More Undo However, we did not post anyone from outside the corporation," he said. On DMK's poll promise to make sanitary workers permanent, the minister said it was the CM's call. "The CM has asked to do what is possible," he added. On the claim of his predecessor S P Velumani that 17,000 sanitary workers were made permanent during the AIADMK regime, he said, "The workers who were made permanent were not posted for sanitary work." Nehru flagged off vehicles carrying ration items from Uraiyur as part of the Thayumanavar scheme. He also visited some houses, distributed the ration items, and interacted with the beneficiaries. On the opposition parties' criticism that the DMK govt was implementing many promises in its last year, Nehru said, "The govt can implement poll promises only one by one. The CM has been implementing more than he assured." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
