Sovos Partners with Tungsten Automation to Deliver Breakthrough Compliant Accounts Payable (AP) Solution

Business Wire09-07-2025
ATLANTA & IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sovos, the always-on compliance company, and Tungsten Automation, the global leader in intelligent workflow automation solutions, today announced a strategic partnership to deliver a truly integrated compliant AP solution. This collaboration addresses the critical business need for seamless integration between accounts payable automation and indirect tax compliance in an era of increasing global regulatory complexity.
The partnership combines the Tungsten Automation Platform with Sovos' Tax Compliance Cloud to create a comprehensive solution for intelligent invoice automation and global tax compliance. The combined solution supports both paper and PDF invoice capture using OCR and AI-powered technology for advanced document processing and connects seamlessly with supplier portals while integrating with ERP and procurement systems. It provides global tax determination and ensures real-time compliance with e-invoicing regulations. This seamless approach reduces manual effort, accelerates processing times, and ensures multi-national organizations remain compliant with evolving global mandates - unlocking operational efficiency, audit readiness, and peace of mind at scale.
Addressing a Critical Market Need
Traditional AP workflows remain manual, error-prone, and disconnected from tax compliance requirements, resulting in operational inefficiencies, higher costs, and significant compliance risks. With new global tax mandates such as VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) and Continuous Transaction Controls (CTC) taking hold, companies can no longer treat AP automation and tax compliance as separate initiatives. Businesses need invoice agility across all platforms and systems.
"The convergence of AP automation and tax compliance isn't just an operational advantage, it's become a business imperative," said Peter Hantman, CEO, Tungsten Automation. "Our partnership with Sovos addresses a critical C-Suite need in how enterprises approach their financial workflows. By integrating our proven automation capabilities with Sovos' comprehensive compliance expertise, we're delivering a solution that transforms AP from a cost center into a strategic advantage."
Seamless Integration Delivers Unprecedented Value
The Compliant AP solution works through five integrated stages:
Invoice capture & data extraction: Tungsten's AI-powered OCR technology extracts data from any invoice format with intelligent validation
Automated invoice matching & workflow routing: Automated matching against purchase orders and goods receipts within SAP systems
Integrated tax determination & compliance validation: Sovos provides real-time tax determination at both the network and SAP stages
Seamless ERP posting: Validated invoices are automatically posted to SAP with complete audit-ready documentation
Real-time reporting & analytics: Comprehensive visibility into invoice status, AP cycle times, and tax liabilities
"This partnership represents the evolution of tax compliance from a reactive business requirement to a proactive growth enabler," said Kevin Akeroyd, CEO, Sovos. "By combining our deep tax expertise with Tungsten's automation leadership, we're not just solving today's compliance challenges, we're futureproofing our customers' operations against an evolving global regulatory landscape. This is exactly the kind of integrated innovation that transforms how businesses operate."
Proven Partnership Built on Operational Success
This strategic alliance builds upon a long-standing relationship between the companies, with Sovos previously serving as the embedded tax compliance engine within Tungsten's platform. This new agreement formalizes a partnership that has been tested and refined through direct customer feedback and operational success.
The solution offers unprecedented flexibility as a source system-agnostic platform that connects as a 'last mile compliance partner' to existing infrastructure without requiring system replacement. Companies can implement the joint solution without operational disruption while achieving up to 90% touchless processing, reducing 70% costs in audit or compliance-related penalties, and cutting per-invoice costs from approximately $10 to less than $2.
Market Impact and Customer Benefits
Key benefits of the integrated compliant AP solution include:
Elimination of manual AP workflows with 90%+ touchless processing
Guaranteed tax accuracy through integrated validation
Dramatic reduction in AP processing costs
Improved cash flow through faster, more accurate processing
ViDA compliance readiness for evolving EU mandates
Reduced implementation risk with proven solutions from established market leaders
Deployment flexibility that adapts to existing systems without disruption

When An Enterprise Knowledge Graph Plan Comes Together

John "Hannibal" Smith (George Peppard) loved it when a plan came together. He would famously conjure up resources and an execution strategy for the A-Team to carry out its daring missions and keep us all entertained through the 1980s. While Hannibal had to rely on his own guile and ingenuity back in the day, today he might have first consulted an AI-driven planning solution to work out his next best steps. For organizations today, approaching their most challenging problems without an enterprise software planning solution sounds (as B.A. Baracus would have said) like you're being 'a fool', right? This is why strategic planning consultants and specialists lean heavily on supply chain management technologies (remember before the pandemic when these used to be nice, rather than a must-have), integrated business planning tools, sales and operations planning software platforms and AI-driven demand forecasting. Key Planning Managemeny Vendors A mix of large and smaller players, key vendors in this space include SAP for its integrated business planning software, Oracle, Google Cloud with its enterprise knowledge graph service, IBM for its planning analytics toolset and Neo4j (better known as a graph database specialist, but one that is used extensively in business risk analysis scenarios, rather like TigerGraph also is). Other key movers in this market segment include Kinaxis, Logility, E2open, BlueYonder (supply chain), ToolsGroup (retail planning) and Anaplan. Aiming to straddle many of the often essentially modular capabilities already mentioned here, but in a way that is inherently integrated with an AI-centric architecture from first principles is o9. Officially known as o9 Solutions, the company's name is drawn from an expression of the continuous push to a higher order of business improvement i.e. the letter 'o' for the optimization of organizations… and 9 because we can never reach perfection (i.e level 10). With a technical remit committed to combining generative and agentic AI functions with the organization's own proprietary enterprise knowledge graph, o9 today has a focus on cross-functional analysis that works in real-time. Post-Game Analysis Due to its so-called 'post-game analysis capabilities', the o9 platform is engineered to find the gaps that might exist in between the point of business plans and business execution. It's all about uncovering what the company calls 'value leakage' and making sure that that value is not leaked (or haemorrhaged) out of the business. With its trademarked o9 Digital Brain Platform, the company says it has built specialized AI agents and self-learning models that take organizations towards a 'boundaryless operating model' in terms of ability to plan, work profitably and efficiently and possibly even enter new markets. This post-game analysis service runs on its own inbuilt learning models to provide insights into why any given business action's execution deviated from a plan. Software tools here include automated identification of value leakage and performance gaps and root-cause analysis algorithms. A rather fluffy marketingspeak term, o9 also offers 'AI-powered storytelling' at this level i.e. an ability to translate business stats and metrics into natural language that non-technical businesspeople can interpret as they work to steer a business. Islands Of Data & Tribal Knowledge The Digital Brain features specialized AI agents designed to enhance the productivity of management and planners in front-line operations roles. The company developed these AI Agents via a process that its team says combine generative and agentic AI with its own enterprise knowledge graph technology. It is capable of connecting what o9 promises are 'islands of data and tribal knowledge' into a system of record of digital knowledge. These new AI agents can analyze large volumes of data to identify risks and opportunities while answering key management questions that o9 refers to as the 3Ws: What happened and why? What is likely to happen? What cross-functional actions should be taken to improve the plan? 'This new offering will allow o9 clients to improve and extend capabilities within their existing o9 Digital Brain platform deployment through a self-service model. Users can continuously improve, innovate and be in control of their own use of the platform to fine-tune capabilities and drive adoption of business processes. No-code and low-code AI agents will make it easier for innovation to leverage the platform's flexibility. Features include the ability to continuously extend and improve deployed solutions, build unique differentiated capabilities into standard processes, and modernize legacy applications,' said Chakri Gottemukkala, co-founder and CEO of o9, speaking at a software planning roundtable in London this month. Gottemukkala continued, 'Organizations across many industries are grappling with market headwinds, such as international trade agreements and geopolitical uncertainties, which are ever-changing and have a direct impact on their ability to execute their business plans efficiently and cost-effectively. o9 helps companies better navigate market uncertainties by offering insights into why there are gaps between a plan and the actual execution, providing root-cause analysis, and pinpointing areas of cost or value leakage so that planning teams are able to course-correct and modify future plans based on this information.' Competitive Market Analysis With key vendors in the enterprise planning market already mentioned above, IT procurement directors and software architects operating in this space will base their purchasing and deployment decisions on a number of key factors. An ability to integrate planning tools with preexisting enterprise software layers will be of paramount importance; SAP and Oracle will naturally win over some bids for this reason. Industry-specific tools will come to the fore here. It's a case of cakes, banks and oil rigs i.e. can you deploy the same tools in a bakery as you do inside a financial institution or in an industrial petrochemicals facility? Installation and operational complexity will always be a consideration, as will licensing costs and cloud-native scalability options. Customizability is strong at Anaplan, Kinaxis is known for its concurrent planning engine (it can juggle several plates at once), Oracle is particularly broad in terms of services… but it is both expansive and expensive, so small to medium-sized business users may be less keen. Next-era differentiators in this space could gravitate around any given platform's ability to handle massive data volumes; big data is still a thing. Mentioned briefly above, E2open marks its territory in this market with a respectable global focus and an ability to serve multi-enterprise business networking i.e. forging connections between an organziation and its customers, suppliers, partners and perhaps even social media streams. Aware of these elements, o9 says its special sauce is drawn from its Digital Brain technology's ability to act as a real-time digital twin for a business with the ability to enable rapid scenario planning and dynamic adjustments. Anticipate, Align & Act As o9 demand planning product manager Simon Joiner puts it, today commercial (and indeed non-profit) organizations are not just working to compete on how they price their products and services, they are battling it out over how well they can anticipate, align and act. Because consumer buying habits (and pandemics… and politics) move considerably faster than supply chains do, organizations now are looking for tools that help them juggle and connect short-term volatility with long-term strategic business alignment. 'Demand planning is undergoing a transformation as a whole. No longer a back-office function, it's becoming the heartbeat of truly integrated decision-making. By combining advanced forecasting, scenario-driven planning, and technologies like GenAI and hyperautomation, businesses can build resilience where it matters most. The use of touchless planning represents a paradigm shift towards autonomous forecasting, where sophisticated algorithms and readily available demand driver data enable planning systems to achieve and often surpass the accuracy of human planners,' blogged Joiner, on his firm's own web pages. As peer software review portal Ratesoftly puts it, 'Proper implementation strategies are the backbone of successfully integrating any advanced planning tool. o9 planning integrates real-time data to support swift decision-making in complex business environments. Its collaboration features foster teamwork [and] effective change management and training are crucial for successful implementation and use of the o9 planning platform.' If You Can Find Them… Hannibal and his colleagues on the A-Team would usually leave us with a tease that said, 'If you have a problem… and no one else can help (and you can find them), then maybe you can hire them,' as an enticing takeaway. In enterprise knowledge graph-centric business planning and forecasting, it's more a case of 'if you can find a planning solution that fits your business use case, then maybe your business can cope with shifting consumer trends, market complexity and geopolitical instability'.
