Cong, BJP war of words over ‘Sawan Somvar' holidays in Ujjain schools
While Mondays will be closed, schools will remain open on Sundays. The decision was taken as Lord Mahakaleshwar's Sawari (procession) hits Ujjain streets on the five Mondays during Shravan from July 14 to Aug 11.
It is believed that Lord Mahakaleshwar is the ruler of Ujjain, and he comes out of the temple on "Sawan Somvars" to know the well-being of the people of Ujjain. A huge procession of seers, priests, and disciples travels through the entire town, dancing, singing, and beating drums.
Massive crowds from Ujjain and outside the city gather to witness the procession and get a glimpse of Lord Mahakaleshwar, who is carried by temple priests in a palanquin.
Congress MLA from Bhopal (Central) seat, Arif Masood, questioned the decision of the Ujjain district administration, while the BJP defended the decision. Masood alleged that Ujjain collector Roshan Kumar Singh issued the order to please chief minister Mohan Yadav, who comes from Ujjain.

Speaking to reporters, Arif Masood said, "Mahakal's procession has been a regular event during Savan Mondays, and customarily, people from every society and religion welcome it. Since this customary procession has always been part of Ujjain, what was the requirement to close schools on Mondays and hold classes on Sundays?"
Masood further said, "What if people from other religions start asking for such holidays, what will the govt do? Will they declare holidays for other religions too? The country must run according to the Constitution, not for one religion.
This order is not for Mahakaleshwar Sawari or the children of Ujjain. It looks like the collector issued this irrelevant order to please the chief minister."
The district collector Ujjain's order issued on July 7 said, "In view of the Lord Mahakaleshwar Sawari during the month of Shravan, all govt and non-govt schools within the boundaries of Ujjain Municipal Corporation area will remain closed on Mondays, July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 11.
In its place, the schools will run in their usual scheduled time on Sundays, July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, and August 10.
"
A political dispute started after Arif Masood's comments. Minister for youth affairs, Vishwas Sarang, said, "Reacting to Arif Masood's comment is a waste of time. The country respects the traditions of Sanatan Dharma. Lord Mahakal's ride in Ujjain is a historical tradition. The govt has taken the decision so that young devotees can participate in the procession."
BJP MLA from Huzur assembly seat, Rameshwar Sharma, said, "Parents of school students are very happy that schools will remain closed on Mondays so they may participate in Lord Mahakal's Sawari and take His blessings. There is a special importance attached to the worship of Lord Mahakal during Sawan Mondays. People come from across the world to witness the procession. School children get caught in massive traffic jams.
This decision was taken to save students from the crowds."
Replying to Masood's claim that the district administration took the decision to please the chief minister, Sharma said, "Masood is opposing this decision to please the Muslim community, Sonia Gandhi, and other Congress leaders."

EC to opposition: Get 'wrongfully excluded' to file claims
NEW DELHI: Brushing aside the allegation by opposition MPs Asaduddin Owaisi and Randeep Surjewala that the special intensive revision of electoral roll in Bihar is an exercise in disenfranchising minorities and precarious communities, the Election Commission on Wednesday asked them to get all such electors to file their claims and objections before Sept 1. "Mr Owaisi and Mr Surjewala should ensure that their state units and booth level agents (BLAs) facilitate those they complain have been wrongfully excluded to file their claims with the ERO to add them back in the electoral roll. Interestingly, even as the national party leaders have been complaining of alleged irregularities and imperfections in the roll, not a single claim or objection was filed by any of the 1.6 lakh party BLAs in the field, between publication of the roll on Aug 1 and 9 am on Wednesday," said an EC official. On the other hand, 3,659 individual electors directly filed their claims and objections during this period. Another 19,186 newly-eligible electors have also filed pleas for fresh enrolment through Form 6, along with the mandatory declaration. EC on Wednesday said it is revising the Bihar roll as per the Constitution and the extant laws, and with full transparency. "Citizens are also aware that revision of electoral roll is mandatory before every election as per Section 21(2)(a) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and Rule 25 of the Registration of Electors Rules 1960," said the poll panel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Overpaying for Car Insurance? EC said lists of electors reported by BLOs as dead, permanently shifted, having two votes and who could not be contacted after at least three visits of BLOs were shared with all political parties and their BLAs on or before July 20, giving them ample time to report any wrongful additions or deletions.

Shinde meets PM, Shah, says will back NDA V-P nominee
New Delhi/Mumbai: leader and Dy CM on Wednesday announced his party's "unconditional support" to the NDA candidate for vice-president, potentially setting the line for other alliance partners to follow and increase chances of BJP getting one of its own appointed to the constitutional position after the Sept 9 election to the post. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On a visit to Delhi – his third in less than a month - Shinde made the announcement after meeting home minister at his Parliament office. The election for the vice-presidential post has been necessitated following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last month. Shinde also met and congratulated him on the success of Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. The twin interactions were seen as significant. Sources said the meeting attested to his equations with the BJP leadership with which it engineered downfall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA govt in 2022. Shinde said the Mahayuti will fight the local body elections in Maharashtra together. The deputy CM was accompanied by his wife Lata, son Shrikant and daughter-in-law Vrushali as the family gifted a photograph of Lord Shiva to the PM. Shinde said Modi praised his son who got the opportunity to lead a multi-party delegation that visited world capitals to convey India's message of zero tolerance to terrorism. Shinde also rejected suggestions that his frequent visits to Delhi are linked to his 'differences' with CM Devendra Fadnavis, saying they are working together for the state's development. Stating that PM Modi noted at a meeting of NDA MPs on Tuesday that Shah has become the longest-serving home minister, Shinde said he and his party MPs congratulated Shah on the milestone. He also hailed Shah for his "decisive" leadership, saying he fulfilled the dream of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray by abrogating Article 370.

"Have To Act Accordingly": Shashi Tharoor Slams US For Additional 25% Tariffs
New Delhi: Slamming the United States for "double standard" for imposing an additional 25% tariff on India for buying Russian oil, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said US President Donald Trump's move will make "our goods unaffordable to a lot of people in America." He pointed out that while China imports various materials, including more Russian oil than India, the country has received a "90-day break" from the US tariffs. "Uranium, Palladium, there are various things they (US) are importing from Russia. There is, unfortunately, a certain double standard involved. They have given the Chinese a 90-day break, but the Chinese are importing far more Russian oil than we are. So clearly this has not been a particularly friendly gesture from a country we thought was well disposed towards us, an administration that we thought was well disposed," Mr Tharoor told reporters. Suggesting that tariffs also might signal how the friendly relations between India and the US have been affected, the Congress leader mentioned the possibility of "pressures within India" for imposing reciprocal tariffs on American exports to India. "Very clearly, we have to act accordingly, and we will have to learn our lessons from this experience. I think there is certainly a likelihood that there will be some pressure within India now to impose comparable reciprocal tariffs on American exports to India. So I think we're going to have to really start looking at other trading partners much more in these circumstances," Mr Tharoor mentioned. "I don't think that's particularly good news for us and that takes our total tariffs to 50 per cent then that's going to make our goods unaffordable to a lot of people in America and in particularly when you're looking at these percentages you have to compare them with the tariffs being levied on some of our competitors," Mr Tharoor told ANI. Comparing the tariffs on other countries like Pakistan (19 pc), Bangladesh (20 pc), Philippines (19 pc), Indonesia (19), or even Vietnam (20 pc), the Congress leader said that this will effect Indian goods being bought in US, as people will look for the cheapest option. "This means we need to very seriously diversify to other countries and other markets that may be interested in what we have to offer. We now have an FTA with the UK. We are talking to the EU. There are many countries in which hopefully we would be able to, but in the short term, it is definitely a blow," Mr Tharoor told ANI. US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on August 6 imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. Terming the United States' move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) declared that New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests. "In an official statement, the MEA said, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India." "It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement added.
