Boca Raton's Yvette Drucker announces candidacy for Palm Beach County clerk & comptroller

Yahoo5 hours ago
Yvette Drucker, a member of the Boca Raton City Council, is running for Palm Beach County clerk of the circuit court.
She had been, until now, a Democratic candidate for an open seat in the Florida Senate. She announced her new candidacy on Thursday.
Her move to the clerk and comptroller's race, shows that the 2026 election for the job has suddenly become a high-stakes contest in Palm Beach County and how much Democrats want to win the election.
It also serves to avoid what would have been a Senate primary between Drucker and former state Rep. David Silvers.
Drucker said in a statement that the clerk and comptroller's job fits with her background.
'I've dedicated my career to public service, building coalitions, managing budgets, and helping working families across Palm Beach County. I am proud of my reputation for common sense approaches to major issues, managing relationships across the political aisle, and working with partners across municipal bodies,' she said in a statement. 'Serving as Clerk would allow me to continue that work on a broader scale by ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly, services are delivered efficiently, and county government remains transparent and accessible.'
Clerk of the circuit court and comptroller may not sound as if it's the most exciting political office. But the contest comes at a time when Republicans have been improving their performance In Palm Beach County, once overwhelmingly Democratic.
Republicans now hold the office, which has been held for decades by Democrats. The previous clerk and comptroller, Joe Abruzzo, resigned on Monday to take a new job as county administrator.
Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Republican Mike Caruso to fill the vacancy. Caruso, who resigned from the state House of Representatives on Monday, was sworn in as clerk and comptroller just after midnight on Tuesday.

Caruso said Monday he would run to retain the seat in the 2026 election, when voters will pick a clerk for the last two years of what was Abruzzo's four-year term.
Drucker faced term limits that prevented her from seeking another term on the Boca Raton City Council. Term limits also prevented Caruso from running for reelection to the Florida House.
Drucker's campaign said in a statement that the clerk and comptroller's office 'offers the most direct way to strengthen public trust and improve services for local residents.'
Drucker, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, has been involved in civic- and faith-based organizations, including the Junior League of Boca Raton and B'nai Torah Congregation. She has worked in the private sector in compliance, human resources and strategic management for ADP TotalSource, which provides services to small- and medium-sized businesses.

President Trump's 2028 heir apparent is a 'jump ball,' Republican senator says

Vice President JD Vance shouldn't be considered the automatic MAGA heir to Donald Trump, Sen. Thom Tillis said. WASHINGTON ― The race to be President Donald Trump's Republican successor as the party's 2028 nominee is wide open, and Vice President JD Vance shouldn't be considered the automatic MAGA heir apparent, Sen. Thom Tillis said. The outgoing North Carolina U.S. senator, who opted against running for reelection in 2026, said it's a "jump ball" in 2028 when asked in an Aug. 20 interview on CBS News whether there's a "natural heir apparent" to Trump. "Absolutely, jump ball," Tillis said. "I think we're going to probably see one of the most diverse fields for the Republican primary that we've seen in modern times. I don't see any heir apparent." More: MAGA's next leader? Trump says Vance is 'most likely' to lead in 2028 Trump on Aug. 5 said Vance is "most likely" next in line to win the 2028 Republican nomination, saying the vice president "would be probably favored at this point." But Tillis questioned whether that's the case given Vance's short career in politics. "The vice president was senator for two years. He's been VP for seven months. So he's got limited political exposure, political history. I mean, he's a good guy. JD ‒ I like." "People hate how abrupt I am, but I'm an analytics guy," Tillis said. "He's one of several people who have to prove that they've got the chops," Tillis said, adding that Vance is "smart, capable and articulate" and a "good dad and a good man." Trump is barred by the Constitution from running for a third term, yet he has said he would "like to" run again and often toys publicly about the idea of running in 2028. Tillis, first elected to the Senate in 2014, incensed Trump and the White House this year when he publicly voiced concerns about Medicaid cuts in Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" before voting against the legislation in July. Tillis was one of three Republican senators to vote against the megabill, which Vance cast the tie-breaking vote to pass. More: Trump shows '4 more years' hat to European leaders after White House meeting The race to replace Tillis is expected to be one of the most hotly contested midterm Senate elections, presenting Democrats with perhaps their best chance for a pick-up in the Senate. Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is the overwhelming favorite to secure the Democratic nomination for Senate. North Carolina Republican Party chairman Michael Whatley on Aug. 1 announced he will seek the Republican nomination after Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law, passed on a potential bid.
