England coach Wiegman has learned to enjoy the good times
If England's women's coach was reserved when hired in 2021, she said she has grown into the role, and her passion has been on full display at the Euros, particularly through two nail-biting knockout victories in which the Lionesses were on the brink of elimination.
"First of all, my English has improved, so I understand a lot more, but also you learn more about people you work with," she said on Friday. "You learn more again about yourself and while I'm always working on developing the team, I always try to keep developing myself.
"What I really wanted to do over all these years is try to enjoy it a little bit more, you have to be focused in this job, but you need to celebrate the moments that are good, it's really nice."
As England get ready to contest their third successive major final on Sunday, when they face world champions Spain in the Euro 2025 showpiece, Wiegman's players have described her as a second mum -- direct and demanding but caring and supportive.
Ella Toone said the coach has been kind-hearted in the midfielder's first major tournament after the death of her father. Aggie Beever-Jones said after England's loss to France in their Euro opener, Wiegman put a consolatory arm around her and explained her reasons for not playing her in the game.
Midfielder Keira Walsh called her "one of the best managers I've played for in terms of trying to make everyone feel loved".
"It's a really difficult job when you're in a tournament, and obviously people want to play, people aren't, but she really, really cares about the human side," Walsh said.
"Another thing that you notice when you play for her is how calm she is. It makes a massive difference in the 95th minute when you're losing 1-0, and you look to the side and she's very calm."
Wiegman said the job can be a difficult balance.
"I'm a caring person, so maybe that's the part, I care about them but at the same time I'm the coach, I'm making these hard decisions at the moment," she said.
On Sunday, Wiegman will become the first person, in men's or women's soccer, to have coached teams in five consecutive major tournament finals. The 55-year-old, who is under contract through the 2027 World Cup, guided her native Netherlands to two finals before continuing that run with Euro 2022 champions England.
Football Association executive Mark Bullingham said they will not let Wiegman leave for any amount of money, and Wiegman certainly does not sound like she is going anywhere.
"I'm sorry, I'm still learning English but yes I have (fallen in love) with England," Wiegman said. "Otherwise I would not be sitting here with such a smile on my face.
"This team has always shown so much resilience, I see that in abundance and I see that entirely through the prism of the Lionesses. They are absolutely the most resilient of people. They really want to work so hard and are so committed." REUTERS

Gill run out leaves India flailing in key final test against England
Cricket - International Test Match Series - Fifth Test - England v India - Kia Oval, London, Britain - July 31, 2025 India's Shubman Gill looks dejected as he walks after losing his wicket Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs LONDON - The rain-hit first day of the final England-India test saw only six overs bowled between lunch and tea on Thursday but that was enough for visiting captain Shubman Gill to throw away his wicket with a crazy run-out to swing the series further in the home side's favour. India, needing victory at The Oval to square the series, reached tea on 85-3, but with their two most prolific batsmen already out, and with England's seamers itching for another crack on a wet wicket having failed to take full advantage earlier on, the odds are stacking against the tourists. The overcast morning conditions had looked ideal for England's all-seam attack, even without injured captain Ben Stokes or rested paceman Jofra Archer, but though they looked lively, the Indian batters were only occasionally troubled. Recalled Gus Atkinson was England's sharpest bowler and he struck in the fifth over, trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal LBW as stand-in captain Ollie Pope finally got on the right side of a DRS review after 14 unsuccessful appeals last year. KL Rahul, with over 500 runs to his name from the first four matches, looked relatively untroubled before playing-on while trying to cut Chris Woakes to depart for 14. At 38-2, England and a packed Oval crowd sensed an opportunity but Sai Sudharsan, who had been initially very watchful, started to time the ball well as India reached lunch on 72-2 with Gill, averaging over 90 from his previous 722 runs in the series, also looking comfortable. A heavy shower that caught out the ground staff created more difficult conditions for the tourists in a delayed afternoon session. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The captain, who had looked unmovable while notching four centuries in the previous four matches, inexplicably set off for a non-existent single and was run out by three yards as bowler Atkinson had time to transfer the ball to his right hand before throwing down the stumps. Gill had started the day with all sorts of records in his sights but achieved only a couple as his tally of 743 took him beyond West Indies' Garfield Sobers (722 in 1966) as the highest-scoring visiting captain and also moved him into the top nine for the most runs scored in a series in England - either for or against the hosts. Of more significance was the dismissal's potential impact on India's hopes of saving the series as the two men who had contributed more than 1,200 of their runs between them were back in the dressing room with only 83 on the board. Gill's moment of madness seemed even more bizarre given the state of the game on Thursday when quick singles were the last thing India needed. Another shower took the players off minutes later and tea was taken early with the covers still on. REUTERS

West Ham midfielder Paqueta cleared of alleged betting breaches by FA
LONDON :West Ham United's Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of four alleged breaches of betting rules after an independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Football Association said on Thursday. Last year, the 27-year-old was charged with deliberately seeking to receive a booking during four Premier League games between November 2022 to August 2023 against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth. The FA said it was alleged that Paqueta sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in those matches by deliberately trying to get booked to manipulate the betting market for the benefit of others. "Paqueta denied the charges against him, and a Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing," the FA said in a statement. The Brazilian has been charged with two breaches in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA investigation. Paqueta, who was facing the risk of a lifetime ban, denied the alleged spot-fixing charges and expressed frustration over media coverage of the matter, which he said was misleading. "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations," Paqueta said in a statement on Thursday. "I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. To my wife, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me, thank you." The FA began their investigation of the alleged betting breaches in August 2023. In October last year, Paqueta urged the FA to investigate how information from its case against him had been leaked to the media. "We are pleased Lucas has been cleared ... as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process," West Ham Vice-Chair Karren Brady said. "Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout."

PSG fined by UEFA for fan misconduct at Champions League final
Paris St Germain have been fined after misconduct by their fans during the club's Champions League final win over Inter Milan in May, European soccer governing body UEFA said on Thursday. The French champions, who thrashed Inter 5-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, were charged after a pitch invasion by supporters, the setting off of fireworks, throwing of objects, damage to property and the display of an inappropriate message. Thousands of PSG fans flooded onto the field after the whistle to celebrate the club's first European Cup triumph, with a large number of supporters from behind the goal spilling onto the pitch, overwhelming stewards who struggled to keep control. In total, PSG were fined 148,000 euros ($169,208.40), with the biggest penalty for the pitch invasion and use of pyrotechnics. UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body also issued a ban on PSG's away ticket sales for one UEFA match, suspended for two years. ($1 = 0.8747 euros)
