'Black boxes' from jet crash in India found; sole survivor doing well
June 13 (UPI) -- Both of the "black boxes" were recovered from the wreckage of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in India after after all but one of the 242 people onboard died.
The voice and data recorders may help investigators learn what caused the passenger jet to crash just minutes after it took off from Ahmedabad for London's Gatwick Airport on Thursday.
"The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) has been recovered within 28 hours from the accident site in Ahmedabad," Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, the Indian Union Minister of Civil Aviation, said in a social media post. "This marks an important step forward in the investigation. This will significantly aid the enquiry into the incident."
Hours later on Saturday morning local time, the voice recorder was found. The captain of the flight sent a distress call to air traffic control less a minute after take off, India's aviation authorities confirmed Saturday. The plane crashed just 33 minutes after takeoff.
The recorders were recovered from on top of the medical college hostel where the jet crashed.
Members of the U.S. Transportation Safety Board and British authorities are assisting with the investigation. More 50 of those killed from the plane are British nationals. The aircraft was made in the United States.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Thursday they haven't found any safety data that the plane model itself is unsafe.
"They have to get on the ground and take a look. But again, right now it'd be way too premature," Duffy said at a news conference. "People are looking at videos and trying to assess what happened, which is never a strong, smart way to make decisions on what took place."
It was the first fatal flight involving the 787-8. Boeing has manufactured 1,188 of the planes since they went into service in 2009.
India's government is inspecting all Boeing 787s , the aviation minister just told reporters in a press briefing. Air India operates 33 Boeing 787s and rival airline IndiGo has one, according to data from Flightradar24.
Rescue workers scoured the site for survivors and, miraculously, one man, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who had been in seat 11A on the Air India flight, right next to his brother. He walked away from the crash site with only minor injuries.
The sole survivor is doing well in hospital but is "psychologically disturbed," according to the Civil Hospital medical director.
The jet struck a hostel for B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital students and relatives, a medical school. The total death toll is at least 290.
The British national of Indian origin told the Hindustan Times it happened very fast.
"Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed," Ramesh said. "I don't know how I'm alive, how I exited the plane."
Ramesh added, "I don't know how I survived. I saw people dying in front of my eyes -- the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me. ... I walked out of the rubble."
He was seated near a left-side window emergency exit in the economy section of the aircraft. He said he saw the exit, tried to get out through it and succeeded.
Ramesh said he still can't believe he made it out alive. Prime Minister Narenda Modi visited him in the hospital.
Modi said on X, "Met those injured in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, including the lone survivor and assured them that we are with them and their families in this tough time. The entire nation is praying for their speedy recovery.
A student said it was a "miracle" she missed the flight.
Bhoomi Chauhan, 28, said she was angry after a traffic jam on the way to the airport meant she missed boarding the flight by just 10 minutes. Now she said is "numb" after learning a about the crash.
In a statement on X Air India offered its deepest condolences to families of those killed and added, "The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national.
The FAIMA Doctors Association said on X that "The wife of one super-specialist doctor was found dead."
Fifty MBBS students were hospitalized in stable condition while two or three were in critical condition and four or five students were missing. Three to four relatives of resident doctors also are missing, according to FAIMA.

AI can make us UK's biggest firm, Rolls-Royce says
Rolls-Royce's plan to power artificial intelligence (AI) with its nuclear reactors could make it the UK's most valuable company, its boss has said. The engineering firm has signed deals to provide small modular reactors (SMRs) to the UK and Czech governments to power AI-driven data centres. AI has boomed in popularity since 2022, but the technology use lots of energy, something which has raised practical and environmental concerns. Rolls-Royce chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic told the BBC it has the "potential" to become the UK's highest-valued company by overtaking the largest firms on the London Stock Exchange thanks to its SMR deals. "There is no private company in the world with the nuclear capability we have. If we are not market leader globally, we did something wrong," he said. Tufan Erginbilgic has overseen a ten-fold increase in Rolls-Royce's share price since taking over in January 2023. However, he has ruled out the idea of Rolls-Royce seeking to list its shares in New York as British chip designer Arm has done and the likes of Shell and AstraZeneca have considered in the search for higher valuations. This is despite the fact that 50% of its shareholders and customers are US-based. "It's not in our plan," said Mr Erginbilgic, a Turkish energy industry veteran. "I don't agree with the idea you can only perform in the US. That's not true and hopefully we have demonstrated that." AI investment Rolls-Royce already supplies the reactors that power dozens of nuclear submarines. Mr Erginbilgic said the company has a massive advantage in the future market of bringing that technology on land in the form of SMRs. SMRs are not only smaller but quicker to build than traditional nuclear plants, with costs likely to come down as units are rolled out. He estimates that the world will need 400 SMRs by 2050. At a cost of up to $3bn (£2.2bn) each, that's another trillion dollar-plus market he wants and expects Rolls-Royce to dominate. The company has signed a deal to develop six SMRs for the Czech Republic and is developing three for the UK. But it remains an unproven technology. Mr Erginbilgic conceded he could not currently point to a working SMR example but said he was confident in its future potential. There are also concerns about the demands on water supplies from the data centre and SMR cooling systems. In response, companies including Google, Microsoft and Meta have signed deals to take energy from SMRs in the US when they are available. Next generation aircraft Rolls-Royce sees SMRs as key to its future, but its biggest business is aircraft engines. Already dominant in supplying engines to wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, it plans to break into the next generation of narrow-bodied aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. This market is worth $1.6tn - nine times that of the wide-bodied . Rolls-Royce is a bit player in a market that has powerful and successful leaders, and that rival Pratt and Witney lost $8bn trying and failing to break into. The market is dominated by CFM International – a joint venture between US-based GE Aerospace and French company Safran Aerospace Engines. Industry veterans told the BBC that market leaders can and will drop prices to airline customers long enough to see off a new assault on their market dominance. But Mr Erginbilgic said this is not just the biggest business opportunity for Rolls-Royce. Rather, it is "for industrial strategy... the single biggest opportunity for the UK for economic growth". "No other UK opportunity, I challenge, will match that," he said. Share price up ten-fold Although Rolls-Royce sold its car making business to BMW nearly 30 years ago, the name of the company is still synonymous with British engineering excellence. But in the early part of this decade that shine had worn off. The company was heavily indebted, its profit margins were non-existent, and thousands of staff were being laid off. When Mr Erginbilgic took over in January 2023, he likened the company to "a burning platform". "Our cost of capital was 12%, our return was 4% so every time we invested we destroyed value," he said. Two and a half years later, the company expects to make a profit of over £3bn, its debt levels have fallen and shares have risen over 1,000% - a ten-fold rise. So how did that happen? And is Mr Erginbilgic right to think that Rolls-Royce's roll is only just starting? 'Grudging respect' The timing of his appointment was fortunate according to some industry veterans. Rolls-Royce's biggest business – supplying engines to commercial airlines – has rebounded strongly from the Covid pandemic. The company's most successful product – the Trent series of aircraft engines – are at the sweet spot of profitability as the returns on investment in their development over a decade ago begin to pour into company coffers. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 arguably made it almost inevitable that its defence business would see higher spending from European governments – which has been confirmed by recent announcements. Unions have not always been fans of Mr Erginbilgic's hard-charging approach. In October 2023, one of his first major move was cutting jobs, which drew criticism from Sharon Graham, the boss of the Unite union. "This announcement appears to be about appeasing the markets and its shareholders while ignoring its workers," she said at the time. However, overall global headcount has grown from 43,000 to 45,000 since 2023 and union sources say there is "grudging respect" for Mr Erginbilgic. Those sources give him one third of the credit for the turnaround around in the company's fortunes, with a third credited to market conditions and a third to his predecessor Warren East for "steadying the ship". So does Mr Erginbilgic really believe that Rolls-Royce can be the UK's most valuable company – overtaking the likes of AstraZeneca, HSBC, and Shell? "We are now number five in the FTSE. I believe the growth potential we created in the company right now, in our existing business and our new businesses, actually yes – we have that potential." Valparaiso council overrides mayor's veto of reimagined Advisory Human Relations Council
As Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas predicted, the city council responded to his veto of a revised Advisory Human Relations Council with a 5-2 override vote Monday. 'I think we know how this vote is going to go, so let's call the vote,' Costas said Monday after council member Robert Cotton, D-2nd, motioned for a vote to negate the mayor's veto. Another vote and further debate of the ordinance were not included on the council agenda released late Thursday, which prompted council member Ellen Kapitan, D-At-large, to rebuke Costas for waiting until after the agenda was created before notifying the council of his veto. As with the last council meeting on July 28, the ordinance, which was crafted and introduced by Kapitan and at-large member Emilie Hunt, drew the same supportive votes from Cotton, Barbara Domer, D-3rd, and Diana Reed, D-1st. Peter Anderson, R-5th, and Jack Pupillo, R-4th, once again voted against having the mayor's veto dissolved. Kapitan asked that Costas repeat for the public the reasoning behind his veto, as communicated in his email Thursday. 'I decided not to sign Ordinance No. 8 as passed at last month's council meeting because, as I've been clear all along this process, I believe that the current make-up and function of the AHRC as it is now is very effective to advise me in my role as the city's executive,' Costas explained. 'I've continued to urge the council to create their own Human Relations Council or a similar committee by selecting their own member to serve on that body rather than absorbing my existing appointed member and adding to that number. As I've said publicly, I don't wish for there to be mayor appointments to this council's created advisory group. I haven't seen the collaboration I'd hope for this, and as a result, I felt that vetoing this [ordinance] was warranted.' Of the 10 residents who addressed the mayor and council before the override, the divided sides were split evenly with five residents in favor of the council-created combined committee and five voices favoring the mayor retaining his existing advisory group. 'I fully support the mayor's veto of this ordinance,' James Ferguson said when addressing the mayor and council members. 'After last meeting's discussion about this ordinance, I decided to attend the Advisory Human Relations Council meeting on July 22, and I kind of expected some of the city council members to be there. Instead, there were the Advisory Human Relations Council members all there wondering what's going on.' Alison Quackenbush, a middle school civics teacher who serves as the chair of the existing Advisory Human Relations Council as appointed by Costas, said Tuesday she, like most of the members of the mayor's appointed council, 'are still processing what is happening' and 'are unsure of what comes next.' Hunt and Kapitan have publicly expressed their displeasure with 'a lack of programming and events' organized by the existing advisory council and insist it is part of that group's 'mission.' Quackenbush has publicly responded that she and the other members are volunteers assisting as appointments by the mayor and have never been directed to oversee and promote specific events and programming. In addition to Quackenbush, other appointed voting members of the existing council are Elisabeth Cohon, Debi Sibray, Mark Fesenmyer, Patrick Lyp, Carolyn Rodea, David Muniz, Mike Hendren and Jack Tipold, in addition to non-voting members Katie Shideler, Olivia Krutz and Valparaiso Police Chief Andrew McIntyre. 'Just because I was appointed a member of this group for the mayor doesn't mean I will want to serve on a newly formed council, depending on what the direction and mission is for the group,' Tipold said at the July 22 Advisory Human Relations Committee. Other members echoed Tipold's sentiment while Costas told those assembled he 'wasn't in a place to provide any advisement or further information' because he wasn't clear on what the council's purpose was for their re-imagined group. In March, a news release announced the city of Valparaiso's Human Relations Council's 'invitation to the community' to apply for its new Community Cultural Educational grants. 'We are looking to support events or efforts that further the mission of the HRC, which is to increase awareness, appreciation and dialogue among diverse and traditionally underrepresented groups, such as race, religion, national origin, age, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status and individuals with disabilities,' Quackenbush said in the distributed press release. 'This grant is designed to spark ideas and support efforts that advance inclusion and education, whether that's in programming, events or other outreach.' She said then the $10,000 grant pool was funded by the Valparaiso Mayor's Office and was to be disbursed in the form of matching grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 per project. The plan is for grants to be awarded twice annually. Applications for the first cycle were due April 30. Quackenbush said they had three organizations apply for grants: the Valparaiso Creative Council, LGBTQ Outreach of Porter County, and Hilltop Neighborhood House. However, though each was approved by her council and recommended for funding, ultimately, all three were rejected when presented to the mayor's office. 'We were able to find two out of the three funding for their projects through other funding means,' Quackenbush said.
