London's clean air gains should inspire bold global action, says Mayor Sadiq Khan
Replying to a questionnaire sent to him by PTI, Khan underlined the importance of shared responsibility between governments, businesses and communities to achieve climate goals.
New Delhi, Jun 11 (PTI) Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is on a mission to make London net zero by 2030, has called on global leaders to draw inspiration from the city's efforts to improve air quality and said that he hopes that its clean air initiatives will encourage bold action on environmental challenges worldwide.
'I am committed to making London net zero by 2030 and have implemented an array of climate policies and initiatives to help get us there. However, reaching net zero needs to be a collective effort, and that is why I am working closely with the government, alongside local councils, businesses, and London's communities,' Khan told PTI.
He said he also hopes that the results achieved in London will inspire leaders both in the UK and around the world to be bold in addressing environmental challenges in their cities, and to take strong action to improve air quality to protect their citizens and the environment.
While London aims to be net zero by 2030, the UK hopes to cut greenhouse emissions to zero by 2050.
According to the City Hall's 2021 Energy Monitoring Report, referable developments in London achieved carbon reductions 46.2 per cent higher than those required by national legal standards for new buildings.
The Mayor's Energy Efficiency Fund, launched in 2018, has mobilised over 330 million pounds for net-zero projects. These include retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure and developing local heat networks to decarbonise energy use.
London's policies have been highlighted internationally, including through platforms such as the C40 Cities — a global network of mayors working to confront the climate crisis.
Indian officials and urban planners, including those from Delhi, also a member of the C40 group, have participated in these forums to exchange urban strategies to tackle air pollution and climate change.
London has taken significant steps to reduce pollution and address climate change, and some Indian cities are drawing inspiration from these examples.
Multiple cities in Maharashtra, including Pimpri Chinchwad and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, are planning to introduce low emission zones — a concept implemented in London. The Delhi government has expanded its electric bus fleet as part of its broader clean transport push to cut emissions.
According to the 2024 World Air Quality Report, Delhi is the world's most polluted capital city.
Several Indian cities, including Delhi, face persistent air quality challenges, particularly in the winter months when particulate matter levels frequently exceed safe thresholds. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), vehicular emissions, construction dust, and biomass burning remain among the key contributors.
As part of the newly signed UK-India Free Trade Agreement, British clean energy companies will have unprecedented access to India's public procurement market. This opens the door for UK firms to bid for large-scale renewable energy projects across India.
According to a statement issued by the UK government, the agreement represents a key step toward greater commercial participation in India's energy transition, which targets 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. The demand is expected to grow across sectors, including offshore wind, hydrogen, smart grids and battery storage.
One of the most important interventions under Khan's tenure in London has been the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which in August 2023 was extended to cover all 32 London boroughs. The zone now spans 1,500 square kilometres and impacts nearly 9 million residents.
Transport decarbonisation remains a central component of the city's climate strategy. London currently hosts over 22,700 public electric vehicle charging points — nearly a third of the UK's total — including about 1,350 rapid or ultra-rapid chargers, based on data from the London Assembly and the Mayor's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy (2025).
The city's bus fleet includes more than 1,400 battery electric buses and 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses. The wider fleet is largely compliant with ULEZ standards, according to Transport for London.
Since 2017, the London Community Energy Fund has supported 194 community-led projects, leading to the installation of 3.3 MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity and an estimated lifetime savings of around 9,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, according to City Hall reports.
The city aims to support up to 1,000 such projects by 2030 as part of its net-zero emissions roadmap. PTI ABU DIV DIV

While Trump imposes high tariffs, India dramatically increases energy imports from US

According to the data cited by The Hindustan Times, crude oil imports surged a whopping 51 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period. The energy commitment reflects New Delhi's bid to rebalance trade ties with Washington, DC, which has been one of the key demands of the Trump administration from India. The data also reflected that India's Liquefied natural gas imports have nearly doubled from $1.41 billion in FY2023-24 to $2.46 billion in FY2024-25. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It is pertinent to note that this rise in energy imports followed a February Agreement signed between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter's visit to the US. At that time, both leaders committed to expanding energy cooperation. India went on to pledge to boost American energy imports to $25 billion from $15 billion in 2024, while bilateral trade is targeted to more than double from $200 billion to $500 billion by 2030. Indian companies tap into the American energy sector According to the data cited by The Hindustan Times, Indian purchases from America jumped 114 per cent to $3.7 billion in the first quarter of FY2025-26 from $1.73 billion in the same period the previous year. 'This trend is increasing further from July this year. So, in July 2025, India imported 23 per cent more crude oil from the US compared to June 2025. Also, in India's overall crude imports, while the US share was earlier only 3 per cent, in July that share increased to 8 per cent,' one of the people who analysed the data told The Hindustan Times. Not only this, American LNG has also emerged as an attractive market for Indian companies. 'Buying LNG from America is a very attractive proposition for many Indian companies,' said Prashant Vashisht, senior vice president at ratings agency ICRA, told the Indian news outlet. The jump came after Trump reversed former US President Joe Biden's pause on processing LNG export licences soon after taking office. Amid this rise, the US Energy Information Administration expects North America's LNG export capacity to double by 2028, with the US providing most of the increase. India's growing appetite for American energy is also coming at a time when the country is poised to become the largest driver of oil demand in the world. According to the International Energy Agency, India will surpass China as the major driver of global oil demand growth by 2030, with LNG demand expected to jump 78 per cent to reach 64 billion cubic metres annually.

Won't allow importing of voters: DMK
CHENNAI/VELLORE/PUDUKKOTTAI: Leaders of a few political parties have reacted preemptively and strongly to queries from the media, television channels in particulars, about rumours that around seven lakh migrant workers from Bihar in Tamil Nadu could get added to the state's electoral roll. However, sources from the Chief Electoral Officer and Labour Department that maintains data on migrant workers said neither the numbers nor the rumours about inclusion en masse had any official basis. To a question on this from media in Pudukkottai on Saturday, former law minister S Regupathy said 'importing of voters' from other states will not be acceptable and the DMK will raise the issue appropriately with the Election Commission of India if such a situation arises. Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan also responded on similar lines to a question from the media in Vellore on Saturday. Alleging that manipulations were being done in Bihar in the electoral rolls by the BJP, he said such moves in other states should be carefully opposed. 'We will become roaring lions to oppose it,' he said, if such attempts were made in Tamil Nadu. VCK president and Chidambaram MP Thol Thirumavalavan also said his party would strongly oppose any such moves. NTK chief coordinator Seeman, in a post on X, said that the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, if done in Tamil Nadu, could result in migrant workers from north Indian states exerting a huge influence on TN politics, thereby eroding the power of Tamil people.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank targets completion of digital push by FY26
Private sector Tamilnad Mercantile Bank is set to complete its digital transformation programme -- commenced last year -- in a phased manner within the financial year. Last year, the Tuticorin-based bank had earmarked ₹150 crore to implement a range of technology-driven upgrades. These include development of Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM) software, Oracle CX-Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, Vendor Management software for centralised expense management, and paperless automation of approvals. "A sophisticated net banking platform (DEH) has been designed to enhance digital banking experiences for both retail and corporate clients. Ongoing projects such as website and mobile banking revamps are slated for phased completion within the current financial year," the bank's MD and CEO Salee S Nair told PTI. The bank was also engaged in completely revamping the internet banking and have roped in IT major Infosys for this. "I think, by December end we should also have that in place as an offering to customer through which whatever requirement you have at the branch you will be able to satisfy yourself. I think 70 odd services will be available through the internet banking," he said. On July 25, the lender declared its financial performance for April-June 2025 quarter registering a 6.27 per cent growth in net profit to Rs 305 crore, as compared to a net profit of Rs 287 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of last financial year. Nair noted that the reduction in provisions led to the growth in net profit during the June quarter. Total income of the bank rose to Rs 1,617 crore during the quarter under review as compared to Rs 1,515 crore registered in the year ago period. On the focus areas during the current financial year, he said during the second half of the financial year, the bank is expected to reap the benefits from various initiatives it had taken including expansion of branch network, upgrading technology, focus on MSME sector, gold loan portfolio among others. "In my analysts call, I did mention that the growth in deposits will be in excess of 10 per cent year-on-year and our advances portfolio will be close to 15 per cent. This is all riding on the fact that the initiatives we have put in place. CASA (Current Account, Savings Account) which has been negative last year, has now come into positive territory at a growth of 4.51 per cent," he said. "The initiatives (taken by the bank) appear to bear fruits on the deposits side and the pace of growth in deposits is up from 4.64 per cent year-on-year to 9 per cent (April-June 2025) quarter and it will get accelerated in the second half. When we close the financial year (FY 25-26) we hope to close the year with much better numbers," he remarked.
