[UPDATED] Heavy vehicle crashes: Selangor ruler calls for action against drivers, companies
KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wants stricter action to be taken against heavy vehicle drivers and their companies found responsible for fatal accidents.
His call comes in the wake of a tragic accident involving a lorry that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen at Km15 of Jalan Sungai Manik–Sungai Lampam in Perak on Wednesday.
In a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also extended their condolences to the families and next of kin of the nine FRU personnel who perished in the incident.
"The Sultan of Selangor wants the government to take serious note of road accidents, especially those involving heavy vehicles on roads and highways.
"The Sultan of Selangor expressed regret that he has repeatedly raised concerns, particularly regarding the penalties imposed on drivers and companies found to be negligent or in breach of safety regulations.
"Given the rising number of such incidents and the increasing frequency of road accidents, His Majesty urges the authorities to take swift and stricter action.
"This is to serve as a lesson to other drivers, encouraging them to be more careful and to give their full attention while driving."
It was reported that nine FRU members died in a collision with a lorry carrying stones on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam.
The 45-year-old lorry driver has been remanded for four days since yesterday to assist in investigations into the case under case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death.
It was also reported that lorry driver has criminal records, including a conviction for rape.

JPJ seizes lorry, investigates company over permit breaches in fatal FRU crash in Teluk Intan
KOTA BHARU, June 6 —The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper against the lorry company involved in the fatal accident which took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak, last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,' he told reporters after observing the Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha here last night. He said the initial investigation found that there was a violation of permit conditions involving the lorry company. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely stones, while the permit approved was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry driven by a man collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampan, Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. As a result of the accident, nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured. — Bernama
