PM orders police to ensure Saturday rally proceeds smoothly
He said the Prime Minister is fully aware of the rally and has emphasised that it should be allowed to proceed without undue restrictions or intimidation, in accordance with democratic principles.
"As someone who holds firmly to the Constitution and the spirit of reform, the Prime Minister has instructed the police to assist in maintaining public safety while ensuring the smooth conduct of the rally without any inappropriate obstruction," he said in a livestream posted on Anwar's facebook page on Thursday (July 24).
He added that the Madani government's position is clear and consistent, which is to uphold and celebrate democracy.
"The right to speak up, including from those who oppose the government, is a fundamental element of a free and just nation.
"Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, this space is not only kept open but is respected," he said.
Tunku Nashrul said that public dissent, even through street demonstrations, would not be arbitrarily suppressed.
Instead, he said such expressions are recognised as part of a healthy and mature democracy, so long as they remain within the bounds of the law and do not threaten public safety.
"Let us continue to uphold democracy with rationality, maturity and responsibility," he said.
He added that the strength of the Madani government does not come from silencing critics but from fostering a culture of tolerance, guided by compassion and unwavering principles.
The "Turun Anwar" rally, backed by PAS Youth, is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on July 26, with participants expected to assemble at several locations in the city before marching to Dataran Merdeka.

Anwar: Malaysia won't ignore Thai-Cambodia conflict
ALOR STAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the government is not taking lightly the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and its impact on Malaysia. Anwar said that although the situation in Malaysia remained stable and calm, the country must learn from the experiences of its neighbours. "I believe, as of now, the leaders of both countries appear ready (to cease attacks), but we must remain vigilant as the Asean region is geopolitically very strategic. "We in Malaysia do not take it lightly even though the situation in our country is stable and calm; we learn from the experiences of our neighbouring countries," he said when met by reporters after attending a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders from Perlis, Kedah and Penang here today. He said the conflict should also be addressed through diplomatic efforts, and both leaders had, in principle, agreed to halt the fighting, although there appeared to be some violations at the border. Anwar said he had contacted the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia and was optimistic that both countries would stop the attacks to allow a peace process to take place. "They (the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia) have given very good cooperation…. Both prime ministers told me, 'Anwar, thank you very much, we accept your role and we want you to carry on'," said Anwar. The Prime Minister said he had also asked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to contact the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia regarding the issue. Yesterday, Bernama reported that Anwar welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in considering a ceasefire to prevent further conflict at the border of the two countries. Anwar was reported to have contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday afternoon to express Malaysia's concern over the escalating tensions. The media previously reported that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of sparking the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have risen since May 28 following a bloody incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.

Auditor General's appointment adheres to law, says A-GC
KUALA LUMPUR: There's no requirement for Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi to retire, as her appointment as Auditor General (AG) was made in accordance with the law, says the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC). In a statement, the A-GC said that based on Article 105 of the Federal Constitution and subparagraph 1(1) of the First Schedule to the Audit Act 1957, the AG may be appointed from among members of the public service. "Referring to Clause (2) of Article 105 of the Federal Constitution, when Wan Suraya was appointed as Auditor-General effective June 13, 2023, she no longer held any other positions in the Federal service and therefore ceased to be a member of the Administrative and Diplomatic Service scheme," it said. "However, although she is no longer part of the Administrative and Diplomatic Service, she remains a member of the general public service under Section 3 of the Audit Act 1957. "Given that her appointment as AG complies with legal provisions, there is no need for her to be retired in the interest of the nation," it added. Earlier this week in the Dewan Rakyat, Bersatu Chief Whip Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee said the AG, appointed under the Federal Constitution, must be an independent individual with no ties to the executive branch and should not be part of the country's administrative structure. He claimed that Wan Suraya was still a member of the Administrative and Diplomatic Service scheme and urged the government to clarify whether the appointment fulfilled the requirement of separation from the executive. Meanwhile, opposition lawmaker Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan also questioned the legitimacy of Wan Suraya's appointment and whether it complied with the Constitution. Following that, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said her appointment is legitimate and in line with the Federal Constitution and Audit Act 1957. During the ministry's winding-up session on the AG Report 2/2025, Kulasegaran said there was no issue regarding Wan Suraya's appointment and that legal provisions governing the appointment process were clear. Earlier today, unity government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the appointment of Wan Suraya is constitutional. He said this was confirmed by the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, during today's Cabinet meeting.
