AIIMS-Nagpur To Get State-of-the-Art Bone Marrow Transplant Centre

AIIMS-Nagpur To Get State-of-the-Art Bone Marrow Transplant Centre

Time of India2 days ago

Nagpur: AIIMS Nagpur is set to establish a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) centre with significant funding from NTPC under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The centre will bring advanced treatment for blood disorders like sickle cell disease and thalassemia closer to thousands of patients across Central India, especially from tribal and rural areas.

This initiative is being hailed as a game-changer for the region, which has long relied on metros like Mumbai and Delhi for bone marrow transplant procedures. The new centre is expected to drastically reduce the physical, emotional, and financial burden on patients and their families from Nagpur and surrounding districts.
The concept for this critical healthcare facility was initiated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who envisioned a dedicated BMT unit at AIIMS Nagpur to serve the needs of sickle cell and thalassemia patients in the region.
Responding positively, NTPC extended financial assistance through its CSR funds, and formalised via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed in Mumbai.
"This will be a milestone facility for Central India," said Fadnavis. "It will especially benefit children and underprivileged patients suffering from genetic blood disorders, which are alarmingly prevalent in tribal belts. The support from NTPC will ensure that modern and accessible care reaches the remotest parts of Vidarbha."
The BMT centre will include infrastructure development, essential diagnostic testing, advanced medication, specialist services, and complete treatment support. It will also prominently carry NTPC branding, in line with CSR funding guidelines. AIIMS Nagpur, steadily emerging as a hub of excellence in healthcare and medical research, will gain further prominence with this addition. The institution will not only provide cutting-edge treatment for blood cancers and genetic disorders but will also position Nagpur as a critical medical referral point for Central India.

NTPC Mouda, which has been active in social development projects across health, education, and welfare sectors, is partnering with AIIMS Nagpur to bring high-end care within reach of the most vulnerable communities. With this facility, patients from Vidarbha will no longer need to travel long distances for bone marrow transplants — making Nagpur a new beacon of hope in the fight against deadly blood disorders.

Nashik civic body to acquire 250 acres more for Sadhugram; readies compensation model

Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to acquire additional 250 acres at Sadhugram in Tapovan area of the city for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela — slated to be held between 2026 and 2028. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With 100 acres of the current 350-acre no-development zone at Sadhugram already under NMC's possession, the remaining land is typically leased from landowners for the duration of the Mela. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has also affirmed the acquisition of this land for Sadhugram. This move is significant given the projected increase in visitors. Around 2.5 lakh sadhus attended the 2015 Kumbh Mela in Nashik, but an estimated 10 lakh sadhus are expected in 2027. Initially, the NMC had envisioned developing Sadhugram on 500 acres. However, to accommodate the anticipated surge in sadhus, the plan was expanded to 1,000 acres in Tapovan — a substantial increase from the 350 acres used for the 2015 Kumbh Mela. Civic chief Manisha Khatri, while talking to TOI, said the municipal corporation plans to acquire additional 250 acres at Tapovan before the Kumbh Mela begins. "We have plans to develop Sadhugram on around 1,000 acres. The remaining land will be taken on lease for the Kumbh Mela period. We are also preparing the proposal seeking funds from the state govt for acquisition of the 250 acres," she said. An NMC official said they have prepared the compensation model for the acquisition of the land at Tapovan in the city. "As per the formula, 50% compensation will be given in cash and 50% as Transfer of Development Rights (TDR)," the official said.

Samruddhi last-leg inauguration: Port-led development to link all corners of Maharashtra, Shaktipeeth next, says Fadnavis

Nashik: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, alongside deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, launched the final phase of the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thakre Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg at Igatpuri in Nashik on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CM announced the state's commitment to continue major infrastructure development, including the planned access-controlled Shaktipeeth highway connecting Marathwada to Konkan. "The inauguration of the last 76km section of the 701km Nagpur-Mumbai expressway marks the completion of the promise made by Mahayuti for the development of the state. It now links 24 districts directly and indirectly with the ports under the state's port-led development plan. This road will also be connected to JNPT and the new proposed Vadhavan Port," said Fadnavis. The section from Igatpuri (Nashik) to Amne (Bhiwandi taluka, Thane) was officially opened by Fadnavis, Shinde, Pawar, education minister Dada Bhuse, and minister of state Meghana Sakore-Bordikar. Fadnavis discussed the initial resistance encountered during the project's planning stages. "We are happy to see Mahayuti laying the foundation and now inaugurating the project, thanks to the trust shown by the people. Similarly, we will construct the access-controlled Shaktipeeth highway with the potential to give an economic boost to Marathwada," said Fadnavis, expressing gratitude to all workers, contractors, and engineers involved. The project includes a gas pipeline alongside the highway for industrial purposes, particularly supporting Gadchiroli's steel sector. Additional features comprise solar power generation target exceeding 500MW and water recharge systems at 500m intervals. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said certain groups attempted to obstruct the highway's construction, temporarily affecting progress. "With Mahayuti assuming office again, the work picked up pace right up to the completion and further planning for the access-controlled grid across the state," said Shinde. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar discussed how government support for farmers changed opposition perspectives. "We had a meeting in the then Aurangabad to oppose the expressway. But after govt announced the road, benefits, and land acquisition rates, the opposition turned into acceptance," recalled Pawar, affirming Mahayuti's commitment to similar project execution speeds. CM Fadnavis also inaugurated the Thane creek bridge No 3, on the south side on the Sion-Panvel highway. He said would ease the movement of the traffic between Sion and Panvel. Officials, meanwhile, emphasised on safety measures, cautioning against stopping on the 120 kmph speed-limit highway Addressing questions about Eknath Shinde driving from Igatpuri, Fadnavis said: "We are in the habit of sitting in each other's car. We are also used to driving. Our car is also going very fine. We three drive the car in three different shifts to ensure the development of the state." The politicians took turns driving, with Shinde initially at the wheel and Fadnavis beside him and Pawar in the rear. Then, Fadnavis drove the car with Shinde seated next to him and Pawar in the rear seat.

Samruddhi expressway to be linked to Vadhvan port

Mumbai: Maharashtra will connect the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi expressway corridor to the upcoming greenfield Vadhvan port, slated to be the country's biggest such facility, via the Nashik highway, the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai greenfield expressway corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, the under-construction bullet train corridor, and the coastal road that is planned to be extended up to the port. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The Prosperity corridor will have up to 500 MW to 1,000 MW capacity solar plant along it with 200 MW starting soon, besides a huge gas pipeline that will supply PNG not only to cities but also to power and steel plants right up to Gadchiroli to achieve decarbonisation targets. Every 500 metres to a kilometre there is a groundwater recharge facility and ponds to hold rainwater," said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis soon after opening the 76 km last leg of Samruddhi between Igatpuri and Bhiwandi. He announced that very soon, work on the Rs 80,000 crore Shaktipeeth corridor from Nagpur to the Goa border via Marathwada and Western Maharashtra will also be started in full swing. Deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar were present at the Samruddhi inauguration, besides scores of ministers and legislators. The CM and his deputies also opened the south-bound arm of the Vashi creek bridge through an online event. "Samruddhi expressway is not just a road; it is a green corridor for Maharashtra's fast-emerging economy as 24 districts of Maharashtra have been connected to JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and eventually to Vadhwan. Special wildlife infrastructure with 100 animal overpasses and underpasses have been constructed to ensure their safe passage. A total of seven tunnels have been built; the one between Igatpuri and Kasara being the widest in the country. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We will break this record once the Pune-Mumbai missing link tunnel is completed. The interchanges on the Samruddhi expressway look like art work drawn on paper. Inside the tunnel, artificial rainfall will begin when the temperature crosses 60 degrees due to a fire incident and will stop when it drops to 30 degrees," he said while interacting with the media at Igatpuri. The tunnel was built by Afcons. Fadnavis said over 3.3 million plantations were done using local species. "While building the road, 1,000 farm ponds were created. We are prepared to generate 200 MW of solar power and 22 amenity centres have been set up. A gas pipeline will also reach from Konkan to Nagpur, providing gas to people and industries. Religious places like Shirdi, Shegaon and Trimbakeshwar will come closer. Now we want to construct the Shaktipeeth expressway as well on a fast-track basis," he said. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde termed Samruddhi a game-changer. "It was one of the toughest and most challenging projects and will greatly benefit people and businesses. A journey that took 18 hours will now take only eight hours — saving both fuel and time. We paid attention to even the smallest details. Around 1.1 million large trees and 2.2 million small plants will be planted, making the expressway the most eco-friendly project ever," he said, pointing out that the road will boost agriculture, tourism, and industry. A farmer starting in the morning from Nagpur with produce used to reach Mumbai in three days. Now, he can reach by evening," he added. Shinde said the Shaktipeeth expressway will be a game-changer for Marathwada as farmers won't commit suicide anymore. After the inauguration, the chief minister and his deputies inspected the longest Igatpuri tunnel of the expressway and viaduct in the stretch. To conduct an inspection of the expressway, Dy CM Shinde drove a high-end car with CM Fadnavis sitting beside him in the front seat and Pawar occupying the back seat. The inspection lasted around 45 minutes, including the time taken for the journey between Igatpuri and Amane. On the way back, Fadnavis and Shinde swapped seats with the CM getting behind the wheel, while Pawar remained in the same seat. The newly-constructed third creek bridge near Vashi Sion-Panvel Highway was also inaugurated via video conferencing on the occasion. The earlier operational 625 km of the expressway stretch was used by nearly two crore vehicles in the last two years. The maximum speed limit on the expressway is 100 kmh in ghat sections and 120 kmh on flat terrain. The expressway traverses through 392 villages in 26 talukas across 10 districts in five revenue divisions. A smart integrated traffic management system (ITMS) will be installed on the expressway soon, the CM said, adding they gave the 'right of way' to the Gas Authority of India Ltd for laying the pipeline while making the access control road between Mumbai and Nagpur. Dy CM Ajit Pawar said many, including farmers from his party, opposed the Samruddhi project at the beginning, but when CM Fadnavis announced very attractive compensation, they all sided with the project and accepted money. "The project was estimated to cost Rs 55,500 crore but eventually went well above Rs 61,000 crore. Around 12 crore cement bags were used in the project. Fadnavis started the project when he was CM, and now it was inaugurated during his second term, and such continuity is rare in politics. And also let's not forget the contribution of Eknath Shinde," he said.
