John Butler Returns With New Solo Album ‘PRISM'
The announcement lands alongside the release of the album's second single, 'So Sorry,' out today (May 28).

Marking a significant shift away from the John Butler Trio moniker, PRISM was recorded entirely solo with producer James Ireland (POND, San Cisco), who co-handled instrumentation and production duties. 'It's a big life and the world, in many ways, is in turmoil. Personally, I did a lot of soul-searching and reflecting as this record took shape,' Butler shared in a statement.
'For me, PRISM is a cathartic release, a celebration of going solo, moving away from the John Butler Trio moniker, and yet another sonic stretch as I continue to refine my musical journey. The title reflects the sonic and emotional 'bandwidth' I wanted to explore: the whole spectrum of what it is to be human. Love, death, politics, inner and outer turmoil and redemption.'
Butler added, 'On the deeply reflective single, 'So Sorry,' Butler explores the long shadows cast by enduring relationships. 'You get together as 'kids' and if you're lucky, you learn how to regulate and become adults together. But no one gets out unscathed.'
PRISM is part three in Butler's ambitious Four Seasons project, following 2024's Running River (an ambient meditation album) and Still Searching (an all-instrumental LP). Described as both 'contemplative and explosive,' the upcoming release promises an eclectic blend of festival-ready anthems, groove-heavy rock, and soul-searching ballads.
Butler performed at Bluesfest earlier this year and is set to kick off a major U.S. tour across June, July and August, with Australian headline dates to be announced soon.
One of Australia's most successful independent artists, Butler's accolades include multiple platinum records, ARIA Awards, and several No. 1 albums on the ARIA Albums Chart. His 2018 LP HOME debuted at No. 1 and saw him experiment with expanded instrumentation and electronic textures, paving the way for PRISM's continued sonic evolution.

King Ultramega Supergroup Pays Tribute to Chris Cornell With ‘Rusty Cage' Cover
A raft of talented musicians come together to form the new King Ultramega supergroup and pay tribute to late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in the process. The nascent group made their debut on Friday (July 18), sharing a rendition of Soundgarden's 'Rusty Cage' – the opening track to 1991's Grammy-nominated Badmotorfinger. 'I just leaned into my love for the song and my immense respect for Chris,' DuVall of the cover. 'Since the instrumental track Bill, Charlie, and Mark sent hewed so closely to the original, I thought it best for me to stay in that ballpark as well.' According to Menghi, the project started back during the COVID-19 pandemic when he recorded a rendition of the track with friends. After being initially apprehensive of the project given the lofty standards set by Cornell, Menghi's position changed once Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil became involved and re-recorded one of his own tracks for the project. 'There is not a singular moment in time that led to this project,' explained Menghi. 'It was a trail of events that led to the formation of King Ultramega and the evolving creation to pay tribute to the voice of a generation.' Future releases in the series will feature songs from across Cornell's career, with selections taken from his work with Soundgarden, Audioslave, and his own solo career. Each track will also be raising funds and awareness for MusiCares, with the likes of Joe Satriani, Alissa White-Gluz and Kenny Aronoff all set to appear in the future. 'My reason for participating was simply taking on an interesting challenge when so much of the world was shut down,' added DuVall. 'I had no thoughts or ambitions for this beyond our posting it on social media five years ago. But if this release can help further the good work done by MusiCares, then I'm all for it.' 'I'm super honored to record alongside all the amazing musicians appearing on the King Ultramega project,' Thayil added in a statement. 'I'm equally proud that it celebrates Soundgarden in this tribute to the songwriting of Chris. Ultra-admirably, everyone's participation is supporting the work of the MusiCares Foundation.' Soundgarden officially disbanded in 2017 following Cornell's passing at the age of 52. In recent years, a handful of reunion performances have taken place, including a December benefit gig under the moniker Nudedragons with vocalist Shaina Shepherd in December. Members of Soundgarden had also previously been announced as performers for the recent Back To The Beginning farewell concert for Ozzy Osbourne at Villa Park in Birmingham, England on July 5, though ultimately did not attend. 'We are very grateful to Tony, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill, as well as Sharon Osbourne and music director, Tom Morello for the honor and invitation to Soundgarden to perform at the Back to the Beginning festival!' a statement on Soundgarden's official Instagram account read. Take The Stand! UMG Wants To Subpoena Drake & Kendrick Lamar In ‘Not Like Us' Lawsuit
The civil lawsuit filed by Drake against Universal Music Group (UMG) is underway, with both sides now submitting lists of potential witnesses. In a move that's raising eyebrows across the industry, UMG has notably called for both Drake and his most recent rival, Kendrick Lamar, to testify in court during Drizzy's 'Not Like Us' civil lawsuit. His complaint centers on Kendrick Lamar's hit diss track, 'Not Like Us,' which famously refers to Drake as a 'child predator.' Drake alleges that UMG not only distributed this song but also promoted it through 'illegal means.' UMG, for its part, has vehemently denied these claims, asserting that the notion they would 'seek to harm the reputation of any artist — let alone Drake — is illogical.' They have also been actively pushing for the judge to dismiss the case entirely. Despite their efforts, the lawsuit continues to move forward. 'Plaintiff, one of the most successful recording artists of all time, lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated,' UMG's lawyers write in the filing. 'Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds.' The legal chess match intensified on Monday, July 14. According to XXL Mag , both sides presented their lists of individuals who could potentially be subpoenaed to testify. Drake's legal team submitted a sprawling list of 63 individuals and entities, signaling a wide-ranging inquiry into how 'Not Like Us' gained traction and its impact. Drake's extensive list of potential witnesses includes the rapper himself, as well as top industry executives such as UMG CEO Lucian Grange, Interscope marketing president Steve Berman, and Republic Records CEO Monte Lipman. His legal team is also seeking information from major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, YouTube, SoundCloud, and TikTok. Furthermore, entities connected to Lamar's Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performance, such as the NFL and Roc Nation, are also on Drake's radar. Drake's lawyers are seemingly aiming to uncover any alleged 'covert tactics to promote the Defamatory Material.' Notably, Drake's team has listed Kojo Menne Asamoah, whom they claim used such tactics, but they have been unable to locate or serve him despite hiring private investigators. In stark contrast to Drake's extensive list, UMG has filed a considerably shorter list containing just nine names. However, the inclusion of two specific names on UMG's list has captured everyone's attention: Drake himself and Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar's manager, Anthony Saleh, is also named. This move is particularly significant because Lamar is not listed as a defendant in the lawsuit. UMG's lawyers argue that Lamar 'is likely to have discoverable information concerning the creation of the recording, image, and video and the distribution and promotion of the recording and video.' The legal teams' strategies hint at a high-stakes courtroom showdown. While Drake claims the lawsuit is about UMG profiting from 'dangerous misinformation' and 'artificially inflat[ing]' the song's popularity, UMG maintains Drake is simply 'weaponiz[ing] the legal process to silence an artist's creative expression' after 'losing a rap battle.'
