While flag hoisting, parades, and cultural programs are traditional ways to mark the day, indulging in films that reflect the nation's journey and heroes with your family can be a moving experience.
From the classic 'Rang De Basanti ' to the modern 'Sardar Udham,' the Indian cinema has given us a rich library of patriotic films. So this Independence Day, gather your loved ones and celebrate freedom, courage, and India through the magic of cinema.
Can there be any better film to start the list of patriotic films? We think not. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Swades is a cult classic starring Shah Rukh Khan as Mohan Bhargav. He portrays an NRI NASA scientist who returns to India to reconnect with his Indian roots. Swades delves into themes of social responsibility, rural life, and identity, resonating deeply with audiences. AR Rahman's stirring soundtrack worked as a cherry on the cake.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
You just can't miss this Rajkumar Santoshi's directorial based on the life of Bhagat Singh. The Legend Of Bhagat Singh chronicles his invaluable contributions to win back India's independence from British rule. Headlined by Ajay Devgn, the film captures the fiery passion of young freedom fighters, questioning injustice and colonial rule with unmatched intensity. The movie also starred Sushant Singh, Raj Babbar, Farida Jalal, D Santosh, Akhilendra Mishra, and Amrita Rao in important roles.
Rang De Basanti (2006)
Another cult classic by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra deserves a watch. The film revisits the story of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Chandrashekhar Azad. A group of carefree students, while acting in a documentary about India's freedom fighters, realise the need to stand up against corruption in contemporary society. Featuring Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, and Atul Kulkarni, this film undoubtedly touches the hearts of viewers and brings tears every time they watch the movie.
Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)
Remember 'How's the josh?" The dialogue that became a national catchphrase is from this film based on the real-life 2016 surgical strike. Vicky Kaushal stars as Major Vihaan Shergill in this action-packed military drama. The film takes viewers through the remarkable events of the 2016 retaliation to the Uri attack, filling them with immense pride as they witness the unwavering determination of the armed forces. It also starred Yami Gautam, Kirti Kulhari, Mohit Raina, and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles.
Shershah (2021)
This emotional war biopic traces the journey of Captain Vikram Batra, one of India's Kargil War heroes. Transforming completely from his door-next boy to his career-defining role that captures love, sacrifice, and courage, Sidharth Malhotra's role as a powerful, fearless army man is remarkable. It is a roller coaster ride of emotions, patriotism and love, keeping you hooked throughout.
Sardar Udham (2021)
Starring Vicky Kaushal, the biographical drama sheds light on the life of a lesser-known Indian revolutionary, Sardar Udham Singh. The film showed how the revolutionary avenged the death of thousands at the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O'Dwyer, Punjab's lieutenant governor who ordered the massacre. Vicky Kaushal's powerful performance and the film's artistic finesse make it a must-watch.
Kesari (2019)
How can we forget this epic war drama, Kesari? This gripping drama showcases how 21 Sikh soldiers fought valiantly against 10,000 Afghan invaders in 1897. Based on the legendary Battle of Saragarhi, the film featured Akshay Kumar leading the charge with emotion, grit, and fierce patriotism. As expected, this war drama is one of the fan favourite patriotic films for its epic battle scenes, nuanced performances and beautiful songs.

Saare Jahan Se Accha true story: Is Pratik Gandhi's Netflix series linked to India-Pakistan relations & Homi Bhabha's death?

Netflix has unveiled its intriguing new series Saare Jahan Se Accha, starring Pratik Gandhi in the lead. The show has already created quite a buzz, with its storyline hinting at India-Pakistan tensions and significant historical events. This has left viewers wondering, does it draw from real-life incidents, or is it purely a gripping work of fiction? Saare Jahan Se Accha true story: Is Pratik Gandhi's Netflix show tied to India-Pakistan tensions and Homi Bhabha's death? First things first, Saare Jahan Se Accha isn't a direct retelling of one particular real-life event. The series is a work of fiction, but it takes creative inspiration from various historical moments. While some parts of the storyline are loosely rooted in reality, the narrative is ultimately dramatized to build intrigue and entertainment. What events is it loosely based on? Set in the politically charged 1970s, Saare Jahan Se Accha captures the tense relationship between India and Pakistan during the nuclear race. The story follows an Indian spy caught between family and duty, while facing a determined rival on the other side. Exploring themes of patriotism, deception, intelligence, and identity, the series blends fiction with real historical events to portray how unseen strategic and political forces shape individual lives. The show draws inspiration from key moments in history, India's first nuclear test in 1974 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the mysterious death of nuclear physicist Homi J. Bhabha in a 1966 plane crash (hinting at foreign involvement), and the Indo-Pak War of 1971. It also touches upon the establishment of RAW, India's intelligence agency. By weaving these milestones into a dramatized narrative, the makers present a gripping tale of espionage and diplomacy set against the larger backdrop of the Cold War. Who all star in Saare Jahan Se Accha? Pratik Gandhi's Saare Jahan Se Accha is one of the most awaited series of Independence Day week, designed to evoke a strong sense of patriotism. The show also boasts a powerhouse cast, featuring Tillotama Shome, Sunny Hinduja, Anup Soni, Suhail Nayyar, Kritika Kamra, and Rajat Kapoor. Created by Gaurav Shukla and produced by Bombay Fables, the series brings together seasoned performers to deliver a compelling story of courage and intrigue.

This actress debuted alongside Tabu, quit her career after marrying an '80s star only to get divorced, died of cancer like her legendary mother-in-law

Sanjay Dutt appears to be a happily married man today with his wife Maanayata Dutt and their twins, Iqra and Shehran. However, not many know that Maanayata is actually his third wife. Dutt's second marriage, to air-hostess-turned-model Rhea Pillai, lasted a decade (1998–2008). His first marriage to Richa Sharma, meanwhile, is remembered as a more tragic chapter in his life. Born in 1964 in Delhi, Richa Sharma soon moved to New York with her family. However, she continued to harbour a love for Hindi cinema in the US. A huge fan of late legendary actor Dev Anand, she met him in America and expressed her desire to work as an actor in Hindi films. Dev, however, explained to her that she was only 13-14 years old then, but when the time is right, he'd launch her in a Bollywood movie. Then came his 1985 directorial Hum Naujawan, for which Dev Anand auditioned and eventually selected Richa Sharma for her debut role. Interestingly, the film also marked the debut of Tabu, who continues to work as a formidable leading lady in Indian films today. Her breakthrough paved the way for her to star in films like Insaaf Ki Awaaz (1986), Sadak Chhap (1987), and Anubhav (1987). Richa began dating Sanjay Dutt, who was at the peak of his career, soon after her debut. After he proposed to her, she was hesitant that her parents would accept their relationship, given Sanjay's reputation of being a womanizer and a drug addict. However, the Khal Nayak actor promised to be a better man, following which the two tied the knot in 1987. A year later, they became parents to daughter Trishala Dutt. The happiest news of their married life was followed closely by the saddest news — Richa Sharma was diagnosed with cancer. It was a cruel irony since Sanjay Dutt lost his mother, legendary actor Nargis, to cancer too, that too days before the release of his blockbuster debut film, Rocky (1981), directed by his father and veteran actor, Sunil Dutt. Like his father did for his mother, Sanjay also took Richa to New York to get her the best treatment. However, given he was at the peak of his career, Sanjay couldn't take enough time out to visit his wife as he continued to shoot for films he'd committed to in Mumbai. The rumours of an affair with his Khal Nayak (1993) co-star Madhuri Dixit began doing the rounds. After being declared cancer-free, Richa Sharma returned to India, but wasn't even received by Sanjay Dutt at the airport despite calling him twice, as per what her sister Ena Sharma told the media then. Initially hopeful that Sanjay would leave Madhuri to come back to Richa, she soon saw reason and moved back to New York with Trishala. Sanjay also sent her the divorce papers, much to her shock. After finalizing divorce, Richa's cancer relapsed. Sanjay was in jail then, arrested under the TADA and Arms Act after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Richa died a lonely death at the age of 32 in 1996 as Sanjay couldn't even visit her owing to his imprisonment. Their daughter Trishala was raised by her maternal aunt Ena and her maternal grandparents in New York. As per the first edition of People magazine in India, Sanjay told Trishala, 'You remind me of my youth. I love you beta.' 'He seems to be happy, and if he is happy, then I'm happy for him. If he found what he needs in her (Maanayata), then that's great,' Trishala said in the interview.
