Iowa football Big Ten home opener among ESPN's top conference games

USA Today3 days ago
As the 2025-26 college football season approaches, ESPN released an article featuring the top 10 Big Ten games of the season, with one particular Iowa football matchup involving an upward-trending conference opponent.
While the beginning of the season features many high-profile matchups in both conference play and non-conference action, ESPN has listed Iowa's Sept. 27 game against Indiana from Kinnick Stadium as one of its top matchups.
Indiana is fresh off one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2024, where the Hoosiers finished with an overall record of 11-2, an 8-2 conference record, and qualified for the program's first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in head coach Curt Cignetti's first season.
While ESPN did not provide much of an explanation as to why they chose the Sept. 27 game against the Hoosiers over the other impactful matchups on the Hawkeyes' slate, the clash between both former Big Ten West division foes will be Iowa's first significant challenge of the season and be a precursor for their ability to compete against the conference's top programs later on.
The article also took a deep dive into each Big Ten program's outlook for the upcoming season, identifying Iowa's need to win close games with its consistently stingy defense, as the strength of its newly improved offense is still unknown.
With six games projected within one score and visits from Penn State and Oregon (you know Iowa will scare at least one of them), close games will make the difference between potential CFP contention and finishing 7-5. But it's almost comforting knowing exactly what the Hawkeyes are going to look like regardless. - Bill Connelly, ESPN
The Hawkeyes open their 2025-26 campaign on Aug. 30, when FCS-level UAlbany visits Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on FS1.

LeBron James' Retirement Decision Receives New Update

LeBron James' Retirement Decision Receives New Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs in April, the biggest talking point heading into the offseason was reshaping the roster and acquiring a center to improve their championship hopes. However, no storyline has generated more buzz than LeBron James' future and the possibility of him playing his final season with the Lakers. James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season but did not sign an extension with the Lakers—a move many interpreted as a sign that his time in Los Angeles may be winding down. Though rumors initially linked him to potential trades, recent chatter has focused more on whether James may be considering retirement next summer. The talks of James playing just one more year before he draws the curtain gained traction when ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that there have been no extension or trade talks between James and the Lakers, suggesting that James could be preparing for his last year in the league. On Friday, Chris Fedor added more insight to the possibility of James concluding his career after Year 23: 'The one thing that I will say is that he is going — I believe, based on everything that I know about LeBron and all the conversations that I've had with people in his orbit, his general orbit — I believe that LeBron is going to make it known that he is going to retire before he retires,' Fedor said. 'It's not going to be a situation where he plays out the final year, and then in the offseason, he just retires.' He added, 'The sense that I get is LeBron wants it all. He wants the farewell tour. He wants all of these different franchises reliving all of his moments against them. He wants all of the glitz and the glam that comes with one of the greatest players, if not the greatest player of all time, calling it quits, eventually.' Should that be the case for James, it would align with how other legends ended their NBA careers. The late Kobe Bryant, for example, announced his retirement few weeks into his final season and was honored by fans and franchises league-wide throughout the year. After more than two decades, it's safe to say that James has undoubtedly earned a similar sendoff—if and when he chooses to hang it up. Indiana football player offered $1.5 million to transfer elsewhere, Curt Cignetti says

LAS VEGAS — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti is hopeful the introduction of revenue-sharing and a NIL clearinghouse will usher in some much-needed stability into a sport that's been plagued by a lack of guard rails. Cignetti told reporters at Big Ten media days that an unnamed Hoosiers player received a $1.5 million offer to transfer during the spring portal window in a blatant example of tampering. The offer came at a time when teams across the country were rushing to sign players to front-loaded deals that avoided having to go through the clearinghouse. "We're all hoping once we sign these contracts they can hold water," Cignetti said. "There's a difference between an inadvertent phone call and calling him during the spring and offering him $800,000 or $1.5 million, which I had happen this spring." Indiana's athletic department began directly paying student-athletes on July 1 as part of the House vs. NCAA settlement. The Hoosiers are fully funding the $20.5 million they are allowed to share with athletes as outlined in the court settlement, with the football program accounting for 70-75% of that amount. Cignetti described revenue-sharing as a potential "equalizer" with the College Sports Commission (CSC), the entity created to police the NIL space, helping to create a more level playing field. It's part of the reason why Cignetti didn't reveal the name of the school that tampered with his player. "You can go down that road, but right now I've been totally lead to believe there's a new sheriff in town post July 1 and I got to trust the people I believe in," Cignetti said.

Indiana football getting starting offensive lineman back in time for fall camp

LAS VEGAS — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti told reporters at Big Ten media days Tuesday that starting left guard Drew Evans has been fully cleared for fall camp. Evans went down with an Achilles injury during a practice leading up to IU 's game against Michigan last season. The former Wisconsin walk-on followed his position coach Bob Bostad to Bloomington before the 2023 season. He went two full seasons without playing in any games before starting IU's 2024 opener against FIU and remained a fixture in the lineup until his injury. He was IU's highest-graded pass-blocker with a 81.7 grade, per PFF, and didn't allow a sack or quarterback hit on 282 pass blocking attempts over nine games. "He's full go, he's cleared," Cignetti said. "We'll manage him somewhat early in camp, I expect him to be out there." Redshirt freshman Adedamola Ajani spent the entire spring working with the first-team offense in place of Evans. He would give IU three returning starters from last year's line alongside left tackle Carter Smith and right guard Bray Lynch. The Hoosiers landed Notre Dame center Pat Coogan out of the transfer portal to replace Mike Katic and have an open competition at right tackle that includes Colorado transfer Kahlil Benson and Ohio State transfer Zen Michalski. Benson, who also missed camp with an unspecified injury, played mostly right guard last year for Colorado. Cignetti said there's ongoing discussions about where he best fits on line. "We're keeping all options open, you want to put the best five guys on the field," Cignetti said. "You have a good competition over there with Zen, Benson and some of those guys. Benson has played both, but played more right tackle with Bob more than anything. We'll let it play out in camp."
