US lowers tariffs on Japanese exports

Shafaq News23-07-2025
Shafaq News – Washington
The United States and Japan have reached an agreement to reduce tariffs on Japanese exports, scaling back a steeper increase previously threatened by President Donald Trump.
Under the deal, tariffs on Japanese goods entering the US will be set at 15%, a cut from the originally proposed 25%. Japanese vehicles—accounting for more than a quarter of Japan's exports to the US—will also benefit from the revised rate, with existing tariffs lowered from 25% to 15%.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, described the agreement as 'the biggest trade deal in history with Japan,' highlighting its role in maintaining strong bilateral ties.
In turn, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, under increased pressure following a major electoral defeat on Sunday, welcomed the outcome, characterizing the revised tariff rate as the lowest among trade-surplus nations dealing with the US.
The announcement triggered a rally in Japanese markets. The Nikkei index climbed to a one-year high, while government bond prices slipped. US media outlets also highlighted the deal, calling it 'the most significant' among several trade arrangements concluded by the White House ahead of the August 1 deadline for wider tariff actions.

Houthis launch drone strikes on Israeli targets

Shafaq News – Sanaa Yemen's Houthi movement (Ansarallah) announced on Sunday it had launched a new wave of drone strikes against Israeli targets in Jaffa, Ashkelon, and the port of Haifa. According to a statement by Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, three drones were deployed—two aimed at military installations in Jaffa and Ashkelon, and a third directed at Haifa port. Saree said the operation was part of Yemen's ongoing support for Gaza, vowing that such attacks would continue until Israel halts its military campaign and ends the blockade. Israeli media reports indicate that since the resumption of Israel's ground operations on March 18, the group has launched over 40 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones toward Israel.

Syria to boost energy cooperation with Saudi Arabia

Shafaq News – Damascus Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir is planning an official visit to Saudi Arabia in the coming weeks to explore potential collaboration in oil, gas, and electricity, sources told Shafaq News on Sunday. The trip follows recent agreements between Syria and Azerbaijan, reached through Turkish mediation, as part of Damascus' strategy to diversify energy partnerships and rehabilitate critical infrastructure damaged by years of conflict. According to economist Hossam Hijazi, the visit signals a dual-track approach by the Syrian government—offering credible investment opportunities to Riyadh while maintaining balanced ties with Ankara. He described the move as a pragmatic step toward securing tangible results in the country's struggling energy sector.
