Mum, stepdad remanded for alleged abuse of boy
KANGAR: A couple has been remanded until June 27 to assist police in their investigation into the alleged abuse of a 6-year-old boy at their home in Simpang Empat here.
The suspects, aged 27 and 37, are the child's biological mother and stepfather.
They were arrested after the boy's grandfather lodged a police report.
Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the incident was reported last Friday when the boy told his grandfather that he had been assaulted by both his mother and stepfather while staying at their house in Simpang Empat.
"The child claimed he was pinched on the right thigh, slapped on the head, struck on the left chest with a stone, poked with a needle on his left arm and choked by both suspects.
"The ordeal left him fearful and unwilling to return to his mother's house," he said in a statement today (June 24).
Yusharifuddin said the boy had been taken to his grandfather's house, who then brought him to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar for a medical check-up before lodging the report.
"A physical examination found no bruises or swelling except for a puncture wound consistent with a needle prick on the left arm.
"The boy has been admitted for observation and is now under the care of his grandparents," he added.
Police detained the suspects at 11pm yesterday in Simpang Empat.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

KUALA LUMPUR: A former finance officer of a petrol station has been sentenced to 16 months' jail and fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving over RM180,000 in company funds. Judge Azrul Darus ordered Siti Nurain Mohamad Ghazali, 37, to serve the custodial sentence from the date of her remand on May 22. He further ordered that she serve an additional six months' imprisonment in default of settling the fine. Siti Nurain was accused of misappropriating RM182,884.02 that had been allocated to pay suppliers. The offence was committed between April and December 2024 at a petrol station on Jalan Tun Razak. She was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of not less than one year and up to 14 years, with caning, and a fine. According to the statement of facts, during an audit conducted on Feb 5, the company discovered discrepancies in its financial records and summoned the accused for questioning. The court was informed that the accused had misappropriated funds designated for payments to cigarette suppliers between April and December 2024 by systematically transferring the monies into her personal bank account. In mitigation, Siti Nurain, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying she has young children, is undergoing psychiatric treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and requires daily medication. "My husband has lost his source of income. I am responsible for supporting our children, aged eight, 10 and 11. I have repented during the one-month remand and will not repeat this offence," she said. Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Saravanan, urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, arguing that the accused had abused her position for personal gain. – Bernama

Student charged with outraging modesty at MRT station claims trial
KUALA LUMPUR: A private university student claimed trial at the magistrates' court today to a charge of outraging the modesty of a woman at an MRT station in Cheras last Sunday. Muhammad Hafiz Damian Abdul Qawwiy, 19, entered his plea after the charge was read out before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim. "I understand the charge. I plead not guilty," he told the court. He is accused of committing the act by making gestures to look at the private parts of a 28-year-old woman at 8.53pm at the Taman Pertama MRT station on June 22. The charge, framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code for intending to insult the modesty of a woman, carries a maximum five-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal did not offer bail as the offence is non-bailable. In mitigation, National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Mohammad Sufi Mohammad Sukor appealed for bail, noting that Hafiz is a young offender. "I ask that he be granted bail as he is about to sit for an examination. "This is his first offence, and he has cooperated with police. There is no risk of him absconding. "His foster father is present in court to post bail, but only has less than RM1,000," he said. This prompted Atiqah to ask the foster father, seated in the public gallery, how much he had. The foster father replied that he had RM1,000. Atiqah also asked Hafiz about his examination, to which he said his final paper was on Thursday. The court allowed bail at RM1,000 with one surety and ordered Hafiz to report to the police station monthly until the case is disposed of. Mention has been fixed for Aug 18 for the appointment of counsel.
