Cyclist killed after lorry overturns, crushing him

SANGLANG: A 21-year-old cyclist was killed after he was crushed by a lorry that lost control while trying to avoid hitting him along Jalan Kuala Sanglang this evening. The victim, Ahmad Faris Hakimi Ahmad Sakri, from Kampung Pida 6, Ayer Hitam in Kedah, died at the scene from severe head injuries. Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the incident occurred around 5.10pm near the Jalan Kuala Sanglang Health Clinic. He said the lorry, driven by a 38-year-old man, was heading from Kangar towards Sanglang when the cyclist entered the road from the roadside and attempted to cross into the right lane. "The driver was shocked to see the cyclist suddenly in front of him and swerved right in an attempt to avoid a collision. "However, the lorry overturned into a roadside ditch, crushing the victim who was beside the vehicle," he said in a statement. Ahmad Faris died at the scene, while the driver sustained minor abrasions to the left side of his waist. The victim's body was sent to the Forensic Department of Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar for a post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Trader held for crashing into automatic parking barriers

KANGAR: A 62-year-old trader was arrested for allegedly vandalising three automated parking barrier machines at Jalan Seruling and Jalan Market in Kangar. He was detained in front of a bank on Jalan Raja Syed Alwi around 2.36pm yesterday, following a police report about the incident, believed to have occurred around 8.50am. The arrest was made based on information from a parking management company employee. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said police also seized a grey Nissan Navara pickup truck and its remote control during the arrest. He said the suspect, who operates a business on Jalan Seruling, admitted to the act out of dissatisfaction with the installation of the automated parking barrier system, which he claimed had seriously impacted his business and caused financial losses. The estimated damage is RM30,000. A two-day remand order, effective until tomorrow, was granted by Kangar Court Assistant Registrar Nur Syafina Aina Zamri after the suspect was brought to court at about 8.30am today. The investigating officer had initially requested a four-day remand, which was challenged in court. The suspect was represented by lawyers S. Devandran and Zuhair Ahmad Zakuan. The vandalism reportedly involved three automated barrier machines, two ANPR cameras, and three gate arms at several locations, including the exit behind the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) building and the entrance near Maybank. The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
