Kangar cops nab couple for alleged abuse of six-year-old boy
Kangar OCPD Asst Comm Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the 37-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were arrested at about 11pm on Monday (June 23) and have been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation.
He said the boy told his grandfather, who lodged a police report on Sunday (June 22), that he was pinched on the thigh, hit on the head, hit with a stone on the left side of his chest, pricked with a needle on his left arm, and choked by the couple.
"An examination at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah by the doctor on duty found no bruises or swelling on any part of the victim's body except for a mark consistent with a needle prick or small sharp object on his left arm. The victim has been warded," ACP Yusharifuddin said in a statement on Tuesday (June 24).
He said the boy also told his grandfather at about 9pm on Friday (June 20) that he was beaten and abused by his mother and stepfather when he was at his mother's house in Simpang Empat.
ACP Yusharifuddin said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. – Bernama

Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.

Man caught after failed snatch theft attempt in Setia Alam
SHAH ALAM: A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07 pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. He is now under remand until August 7,' he said in a statement. Mohd Iqbal urged the public to remain alert and avoid being alone in isolated areas to reduce the risk of crime.
