Three Chinese nationals arrested for suspected burglary in Kuala Perlis
Kangar district police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said police received a report at 11.38pm from a man who found that his uncle's house in the area had been broken into.
'Initial investigations found that the house showed signs of a break-in at the back door. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed three suspects entering the house and taking several valuable items,' he said in a statement today.
Yusharifuddin said among the items reported missing were jewellery worth about RM1,200, cash worth RM2,500 from a safe and another RM357 from a drawer in a cupboard in one of the rooms of the house.
He said the investigation team from the Kangar Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) together with the Forensic Unit of the Perlis police contingent headquarters (IPK) also inspected the scene of the incident.
He said earlier at 10.10 pm on the same day, police received information from the public that three unknown men were believed to have broken into the house and have been detained by villagers.
'Acting on the information, the arresting officer together with members of the Kuala Perlis police station task force and a MPV team of the Kangar IPD Kuala Perlis Zone went to the location and re-arrested the three men involved.
'The results of the investigation found that they were Chinese nationals aged between 38 and 54 years old who had been in this country for less than a week were looking for work. They were said to have been offered jobs as cooks but have yet to deal with any employers,' he said.
Yusharifuddin said further inspection found that the three suspects had valid travel documents and items believed to belong to the victims, including cash and jewellery, were also seized from them.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine or both upon conviction .
'The remand application against the three suspects has been granted for six days starting today by Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim,' he said. — Bernama

Blaze in Kota Belud claims lives of husband and wife, destroys home
KUALA LUMPUR, July 224 — A married couple died in a house fire that broke out early this morning in Kampung Sangkir, Kota Belud. The victims, identified as Mamat @ Jamrin Sinti and his wife Noorijah Rashid, both aged 47, were found dead in the bathroom of their home. Kota Belud Fire and Rescue station chief Elge Bakuk said in a statement that they received an emergency call at 2.52am. Ten personnel, a fire engine, and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire. When firefighters arrived, the single-storey house was already fully engulfed in flames, and a nearby car was also destroyed. The team brought the fire under control at 3.22am and later discovered the couple's burnt remains in the bathroom. The victims' bodies were handed over to the police, and the operation ended at 4.55am after ensuring no further hazards remained. District police chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the husband worked as a rubber tapper and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

E-hailing firms Maxim, inDrive granted 3-month probation

(inDrive pic) PETALING JAYA : Russian-founded e-hailing firms inDrive and Maxim have been placed under a three-month probation period after successfully appealing the revocation of their operating licences. The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) said the two companies were ordered to take corrective measures to continue operating, particularly regarding e-hailing vehicle permits (EVPs). 'To meet this condition, Maxim and inDrive have improved their registration system to ensure all of their drivers have valid EVPs before they can start operating. 'Both companies have also given Apad 'view only' access to their data to make it easier to cross-check their data on EVPs,' it said in a statement. Apad said it conducted a random check on their drivers on July 11 and found that everything was in compliance. The agency and the road transport department had found the improvements made by the companies satisfactory, and agreed to place Maxim and inDrive under a three-month monitoring period, effective tomorrow. 'To ensure the continuous commitment of both operators, their representatives are required to turn up at the Apad headquarters every month throughout the monitoring period. 'These sessions are aimed at allowing Apad to conduct real-time monitoring, with random checks conducted on drivers via the inDrive and Maxim applications,' it said. In May, both firms were ordered to halt operations from July 24 after failing to comply with Apad's regulations introduced in 2019. In September 2022, the road transport department raided inDrive's Malaysian office and discovered that the firm was operating with an expired licence. In 2023, Maxim was also raided by Apad officers for allowing vehicles to operate without a valid permit.
