Big boost for Mumbai local train services: 12 rail projects worth over Rs 16,200 crore sanctioned
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the government has approved 12 infrastructure projects worth Rs 16,241 crore to further enhance suburban railway services in Maharashtra's capital. The response came following a query raised by Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil.
Earlier this year, Vaishnaw emphasized that infrastructure development is the cornerstone for increasing suburban services. He stated that Indian Railways is committed to modernise, improve commuter experience, and enhanced regional connectivity, with a special focus on the Mumbai Suburban Railway Network. These new projects also aims to decongest existing lines, improve service frequency, and cater to the ever-growing demand of Mumbai's suburban commuters.
Apart from these, the national transporter is also set to introduce 238 new Air-Conditioned suburban rakes. These new AC local trains will be equipped with automatic doors and will prevent passengers from hanging on footboards or boarding moving trains which is a major cause of fatal accidents.
'The introduction of AC local trains equipped with automatic doors in Mumbai has been a welcome initiative to enhance commuters' safety and reduce incidents related to overcrowding. The automatic doors prevent passengers from hanging on footboards or boarding moving trains which is a major cause of fatal accidents. These doors remain closed while the train is in motion and open only at stations when the train is stationary, thereby significantly reducing the risk of falls,' the Railway Minister said.

No formal discussions yet: Government on F-35 fighter jets deal with US
There have been no formal discussions on the sale of F-35 fighters jets to India, the government said on Friday. Replying to a question in Lok Sabha regarding the potential sale of the jets to India, Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh wrote, "No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue." Bengaluru, Feb 13 (ANI): F35 fighter aircrafts is on display is on display at the Aero India 2023, in Bengaluru on Monday. (ANI Photo)(ANI Picture Service) The minister made the remarks after he noted that in February, India and US had issued a joint statement saying the US "will undertake a review of its policy on releasing fifth generation fighters (such as the F-35) and undersea systems to India." The statement came in response to MP Balwant Baswant Wankhade's query asking if any official proposal was received from the US regarding the sale of F-35 fighter jets to India. In February this year, US President Donald Trump said the US was paving the way to provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting the US at the time. "Starting this year, we will be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars. We are also paving the way to ultimately provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters," Donald Trump had said at a press conference alongside PM Modi at the White House. However, even just a month later in March, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh had said that India had not looked at the potential sale, and there was no offer from the US yet. Earlier on Thursday, a Bloomberg report said that India had informed the US that it was "not keen to buy the F-35 stealth fighter jets". The report came hours after Trump's 25 per cent tariffs plus penalty announcement for India, which the US President largely attributed to India buying oil and arms from Russia. However, there is no official confirmation on this report. The F-35, developed by Lockheed Martin, is said to be one of the world's most advanced and versatile fighter jets. There are three major variants to the jets: the F-35A, designed for conventional takeoff and landing, the F-35B, capable of short takeoff and vertical landing, and the F-35C, a carrier-based model.

Punjab and Haryana HC dismisses Kangana's plea for quashing summoning order against her
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday dismissed the plea of actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut for quashing the summoning order against her by a local court in Bathinda in a defamation case over her farm protest remark against an elderly woman farmer. "There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide," Justice Tribhuvan Singh Dahiya observed. The defamation complaint against the BJP's Member of Parliament was filed by Mahinder Kaur (73) of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district, alleging that Kangana had defamed her in a post on the social media platform X by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and implying that such women could be hired to protest for Rs 100. In her retweet, Kangana had commented: "Ha ha ha, she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian... And she is available for 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno's have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally." This was in reference to a tweet by Gautam Yadav, which carried the photograph of the complainant, Kaur, who contended that the defamatory content not only hurt her pride and honour, but also lowered her reputation among fellow protestors. Kaur asserted she had no connection with the Shaheen Bagh protests or the woman featured in Time magazine, and that the imputations were wholly false. Kaur said she belonged to a farming family, actively participated in the farmers' agitation, and that the remarks made by Kangna Ranaut had subjected her to public ridicule and caused mental distress. After hearing the matter at length, the High Court found no merit in the petition and dismissed it. The post, which was later deleted, targeted Mahinder Kaur during her participation in the farmers' agitation at Delhi's borders. On February 22, 2022, the judicial magistrate in Bathinda issued a summons asking Kangana to appear before the court. Aggrieved by the lower court order, she had approached the High Court, contending that the trial court had misapplied Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
