BBC's Director of Music reportedly steps back after Bob Vylan controversy

RTÉ News04-07-2025
The BBC's Director of Music, Lorna Clarke, has stepped back from her day-to-day duties after controversy over the broadcaster's decision to show punk duo Bob Vylan's Glastonbury Festival set live, according to reports in The Times.
It comes after singer Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, led crowds in chants of "death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)" during their set last Saturday afternoon.
In a statement on Thursday, the BBC admitted it had assessed the Ipswich-formed act as "high risk" before Glastonbury but deemed them suitable for live streaming.
However, the BBC said in the Thursday statement that this was "clearly not the case" and apologised for the group's "deplorable behaviour".
Clarke is reported to have stepped back from her responsibilities, which include overseeing six radio networks and live music events, while an investigation takes place.
A small group of senior BBC staff responsible for music and live events are also said to have stepped back.
Following the incident, the BBC confirmed it would no longer live stream acts it deems "high risk".
In the statement released on Thursday, the BBC said: "We deeply regret that such offensive and deplorable behaviour appeared on the BBC and want to apologise to our viewers and listeners and in particular the Jewish community.
"We are also unequivocal that there can be no place for antisemitism at, or on, the BBC.
"It is clear that errors were made both in the lead-up to and during Bob Vylan's appearance. We think it's important to set out some of the detail around the streaming of this performance.
"Bob Vylan were deemed high risk following a risk assessment process applied to all acts appearing at Glastonbury. Seven acts including Bob Vylan were included in this category and they were all deemed suitable for live streaming with appropriate mitigations.
"Prior to Glastonbury, a decision was taken that compliance risks could be mitigated in real time on the live stream - through the use of language or content warnings - without the need for a delay. This was clearly not the case."
It added: "Given the failings that have been acknowledged we are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast. We will not comment further on those processes at this time.
"Furthermore, as a result we will make immediate changes to live streaming music events.
"Any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live."
Since the performance, Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation into the comments made during the group's West Holts Stage set.
It has also emerged that the group were already under investigation by police for comments allegedly made at a performance one month before Glastonbury.
Video footage appears to show Bobby Vylan at London's Alexandra Palace telling crowds: "Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF."
The group - Bobby Vylan and bandmate Bobbie Vylan - issued a statement on Tuesday claiming they were being "targeted for speaking up".
They have also had their US visas revoked, ahead of their tour later this year.
They were pulled from their Saturday headline slot at Radar festival in Manchester and from an upcoming performance at a German music venue.
Bob Vylan are expected to perform at the Boardmasters surfing and music festival in Newquay, Cornwall, in August.
The group is known for addressing political issues in their music including racism, masculinity, and class.
They have released four albums in Dread (2019), We Live Here (2020), Bob Vylan Presents the Price of Life (2022), and Humble As the Sun (2024).

Chilling moment killer whales practice DROWNING each other in horror ‘training session' captured on film for first time

THIS is the chilling moment killer whales practice drowning each other in a horror training session caught on video for the first time. The moment was captured on film for an upcoming five-part BBC nature doc narrated by Sir David Attenborough on parenthood. 5 Footage shows the orcas swimming on top of a 'victim' to practice drowning it Credit: BBC 5 One orca, seen here swimming upside down, stops swimming for the others to practice Credit: BBC 5 One pod of orcas is able to hunt a blue whale Credit: BBC Led by a matriarch, one of the orcas stands in as a body double for a victim and stops swimming. The others then swim on top of it and hold it below the water. The incredible footage is caught off the coast of Bremer Bay in Western Australia. Attenborough narrates: "One deliberately stops swimming in order to enable the others to practice a particular skill. Working as a team, the orca keep their victim's blowhole beneath the surface, exactly as the matriarch taught them to.' A BBC spokeswoman said: 'Specialised underwater gimbals and tow cameras were used to bring cameras alongside hunting orcas underwater. 'The practice-hunting behaviour appears to show members of an orca family submerging the head of one individual to prevent it from breathing — the technique used by killer whales to hunt large whales. Attenborough said: 'Parenthood is a journey like no other. The responsibility of providing constant food and safety for offspring can be extremely challenging. "For most, it all begins with a good home. Success for all parents has perhaps the greatest of consequences. It ensures the future of life on our planet.' The shocking footage comes after orcas nearly capsized a yacht and left a helpless crew fearing for their lives. The terrifying encounter, said to be linked to the , took place two miles north of the Spanish town of Deba. Shocked witnesses first reported the dangerous scenes after several orcas surrounded the 30ft boat which was stranded out at sea. At least two of the beasts then attacked and left the ship severely damaged, with the rudder shredded. In July of last year, a Brit yachtsman posted video footage of his Robert Powell and two others on the Bonhomme William had to be rescued by coastguards after their vessel capsized in the Strait of Gibraltar. Last year, Brit couple Janet Morris, 58, and Stephen Bidwell, 58, from Cambridge, were involved in a whale attack that The orcas off the Iberian coast often average between 16ft to 21ft in length. Why do orcas attack boats? WHILE researchers are unsure exactly why killer whales have been attacking boats so often lately, many theories have been put forward. Some experts suggest it could be a playful manifestation of the animals' curiosity. But others fear a "critical moment of agony" such as a collision may have sparked aggression towards boats. Alfredo López Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, told Some even speculate White Gladis may now be spurring fellow killer whales on. Orcas are the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family. Although they never attack humans, the apex predators can take down large groups of whales, hence the name killer. What makes them a unique marine mammal is that they often hunt in lethal pods and family groups of up to 40 individuals - and feast on fish, dolphins, seal lions, seals, sharks and stingrays. The carnivores can grow up to 32ft long and weigh up to six tons - and are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white colouring.

Three clues Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty had secretly split as they announce marriage is over after 13 years together

CAT Deeley and Patrick Kielty shocked fans today by confirming they had split after 13 years of marriage. Mary Kielty died in March, with Dundrum, Ireland. Advertisement A death notice described Mrs Kielty as a "loving mother" and "devoted grandmother" and added that she "will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her entire family circle, neighbours and friends". The presenter continued to appear on This Morning as usual in between school drop-off and pick-up. Social Media Absence 8 Cat has barely mentioned Patrick on her social media – even on Father's Day Credit: Getty Advertisement Neither Patrick nor Cat have made much mention to each other for over a year on their social media – despite being regular users. Patrick, who uses Instagram less frequently than Cat, hasn't posted about her since she first got her job on This Morning back in June 2024. At the time, the post was gushing, saying she was "made for a show" like This Morning thanks to her bright demeanour, being an early bird, and love of a good natter. Alongside a montage of his wife, I didn't know what a morning person actually was until I met this woman. Advertisement " She gets up every day with a smile on her face. And it's not just some mornings. It's every morning. Which is bloody difficult cos she's married to me." But fast forward a year and he has not posted about her since, with Cat not mentioning him either – not even on Father's Day six weeks ago, instead opting to just post a photo on her grid of her with her own dad as a child. When they first got together in 2011, Patrick quickly moved into Cat's home in Los Angeles in order to accommodate her career move over there. Advertisement But since then, Patrick's work has largely remained in his native Ireland, particularly since 2023 when he was announced to be the new permanent host of country favourite talk show, RTÉ's The Late Late Show. He also hosts a Saturday morning show for BBC Radio 5 Live. Meanwhile Cat has had success in both the UK ad the US, hosting long-running reality competition So You Think You Can Dance? since 2006 in Los Angeles, as well as her role on This Morning. As a result, Cat would split her time between each side of the Atlantic, and is now largely based in England due to her work commitments.
