What makes the 2026 Cadillac Lyriq-V special?
The Lyriq-V is one of a handful of EVs that are setting a new standard for high-performance midsize luxury SUVs.
It gets standard all-wheel drive from two motors producing 615 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque when the driver summons 'Velocity Max' mode by holding a button on the steering wheel. In addition to freeing the motors and battery from all restraint, Velocity Max delivers launch control for ultimate straight-line performance.
The same button allows the driver to summon V-mode for canyon carving and track days. V-mode adjusts the continuously variable dampers, traction control, steering, throttle response and more. You can create a personal drive mode or choose among programmed ones using a big bright touch screen that's part of a 33-inch array of gauges, displays and controls.
In addition to adjustable dampers, the Lyriq-V boasts a lowered suspension with components stiffened 10% to 600% from the base Lyriq, which was already a sporty and responsive SUV.
Other features include 22-inch summer tires, a 19.2 kW charging module for quick 240-volt charging at home, performance sounds, Brembo front brakes and continuously variable electric power steering.
Lyriq-V competitors include the Audi SQ8, BMW iX M70, Mercedes AMG EQE SUV and Porsche Macan electric.
2026 Cadillac Lyriq-V key features
Interior comfort and features
The Lyriq-V's five-passenger interior is roomy and comfortable. The front seat offers supportive and comfortable Nappa leather sport seats. There's open-pore wood trim with backlit accents, brushed aluminum trim, a wide range of ambient lights and three-zone climate control.
The 23-speaker AKG audio system delivers the immersive experience of Dolby Atmos.
A multicolor head-up display incorporates augmented reality for navigation by indicating turns with glowing arrows projected onto the landscape in front of the driver.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a convenient wireless charging pad.
The cargo compartment is accommodating, with a practical underfloor compartment. There's no front trunk; the electric motor and suspension fill the space.
Driving impressions
The Lyriq is a speedy and responsive vehicle even without V trappings. The upgraded suspension, steering and power take it to another level.
Despite weighing nearly 3 tons, the SUV feels lithe and precise. It's planted and level on twisting country roads and amenable to crowded parking lots. On the highway, the V is quiet, comfortable and speedy, delivering real-world range that is in line with its official range.
The Lyriq's long nose and roof create a sporty profile that's emphasized by big wheel openings with subtle fender flares and a steeply raked rear window. Its 6.1 inches of ground clearance is 0.9 inch less than the standard Lyriq, accentuating the V's sporty character while preserving easy entry and egress.
GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system continues to add hands-free roads. Improvements for '26 include subtle lane centering in hands-on mode, increasing safety and reducing the driver's cognitive load even when hands-free driving isn't available.
What could be better?
The Lyriq has a couple of minor ergonomic shortcomings.
Stylish, but narrow and oddly located, air vents in the instrument panel are harder to direct to the driver than typical vents. Cooling could have been better during a run of hot humid days. Passenger-side air flow was satisfactory.
Headliner-mounted speakers contribute to outstanding audio quality, but their locations prevent the ceiling mounted grab handles many SUVs offer. I frequently prop my elbow on the door and hold them on long drives.
Why buy a 2026 Cadillac Lyriq-V?
The Lyriq-V delivers exceptional power, handling, style and technology in a comfortable and accommodating package.
With a base price just under $80,000, the Lyriq-V undercuts German rivals by tens of thousands of dollars.
Despite that, the Lyriq-V's looks, comfort and features are as good as anything on the road. It's not just the quickest, but one of the best entries in V-series history.

Ford to invest $5 billion in EV production. Here's what to know.
Ford is investing $5 billion to change the way it makes electric vehicles, a move the automaker says will allow it to manufacture models starting at $30,000 — far less than the current average price for an EV. The Dearborn, Michigan-based company on Monday said it will invest $2 billion to modernize its Louisville Assembly Plant and another $3 billion to build a new battery plant in Michigan, part of its push to produce more affordable EVs. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The company unveiled its new "universal EV platform" at a Monday event, with Ford CEO Jim Farley calling it "the most radical change on how we design and how we build vehicles at Ford since the Model T," which Ford introduced in 1908. According to Ford, the new assembly line will be structured more like an "assembly tree," with three different lines that converge into one, rather than a single assembly belt. "This way of building a vehicle, we're confident, is the first time anyone's done this anywhere in the world," said Doug Field, Ford's EV chief of digital and design, at Monday's event. The company said the design will lead to a quicker, smoother assembly process and improve ergonomics for employees through a less obstructive layout. "Ford's announcement is very ambitious, because it includes both a new production process and a new vehicle," said Patrick Anderson, founder of Michigan-based consulting firm Anderson Economic Group, in an email to CBS MoneyWatch. "If they can actually pull off a production line that has 40% fewer workstations and 20% fewer parts, it will be worthy of the 'Model T moment' claim. Ford's first EV from the new system The first product of this new production system will be a four-door midsize truck, which will debut in 2027. Farley said on Monday that the new vehicle will accommodate five people and feature a "frunk" — a front storage compartment — as well as a pickup truck bed. The vehicle will start at $30,000. By comparison, the average price for a new electric vehicle in July was about $56,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. Field touted the new vehicle's charging capabilities, referring to the truck as a "mobile power plant." "Outlets in the back can give you high power and let you plug in anything from tools to a refrigerator, and it can provide backup power for your home," he said. The midsize electric truck could be produced up to 40% faster than other vehicles at the Louisville Assembly Plant due to the new process, Ford said. In another effort to lower costs, the auto company is also reducing the number of components that go into each car. Vehicles produced on the "universal EV platform" will have 20% fewer parts than a traditional vehicle, Ford said. The company will also use smaller cobalt and nickel-free batteries that will allow it to make "cost gains," according to a video shared by Ford. Anderson said that Ford has its work cut out for them given that the new truck will need to be competitively priced and economical. According to the auto industry expert, the cost of charging EV trucks currently on the market is often much higher than the price at the pump for gas-powered versions. A report from the Anderson Economic Group shows pickup trucks drivers in New York, California and Michigan face "significantly higher costs" if they rely on an EV. A successfully lower-cost truck model, however, could spur a new chapter for the company in its manufacturing of EVs. "If Ford shows the industry it can build and sell a reliable compact EV truck for $30,000, it will sell a lot of them, and open the door to making sedans using the new production process," Anderson said. Ford is reinventing the assembly line to make more affordable EVs, starting with a $30,000 electric truck
Over a century ago, Henry Ford's assembly line helped mass produce the Model T, setting a new standard for how to manufacture vehicles. Now, at its Louisville Assembly Plant, the Ford Motor Company will soon scrap that typical assembly line for a new manufacturing system. Doing so, the automaker says, will allow it to more efficiently build more affordable electric vehicles —starting with a $30,000 mid-sized electric truck to launch in 2027. The new system, called the Ford Universal EV Platform, came out of a skunkworks team in California that the automaker established back in 2022. It's part of an effort to make Ford more competitive with Chinese EV companies like BYD, which have dominated the global EV space with affordable vehicles. Ford CEO Jim Farley has himself been a fan of Chinese EVs after driving one for months. A new Ford assembly line A typical assembly line follows one straight path. As the path progresses, workers add pieces so that a vehicle is constructed from beginning to end. The Ford Universal EV Platform turns that singular assembly line into a 'tree' system with three branches. Workers will build the vehicle's front, rear, and structural battery all on separate lines that run in parallel. (The structural battery includes the seats, consoles, and carpeting.) Then, the three branches will come together at the end, where workers will build out the vehicle's interior. This system means assembly will be 40% faster than current products on the assembly line. It also reduces strain on workers, with less twisting, turning, bending, and reaching, Without the vehicle traveling down a single assembly line, Ford says workers now won't need to install a seat through a door opening, sit in a vehicle to install parts, or reach as much over a fender during the assembly process. The Universal EV Platform also requires fewer manufacturing parts. With this assembly method, parts are reduced 20% compared to a typical vehicle, including 25% fewer fasteners. There will also be 40% fewer workstations in the plant. For the electrical system, Ford has removed 4,000 feet of wiring, making it 22 pounds lighter and simpler to install. The quest to build affordable EVs The first vehicle to be built on Ford's new Universal EV Platform will be a midsize electric truck with a targeted starting price of $30,000. That vehicle will be built at the Louisville Assembly Plant and will launch in 2027. Ford did not give full details on the vehicle, including EV range or battery charge time. The automaker did say it will be as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost, with more interior space than a Rav 4. It will have room for five seats, as well as a truck bed, frunk, and exportable power. 'It will offer, for the first time, fast charging. It will have amazing range. It can power your house for six days,' Farley said at a live announcement on Monday from the Louisville plant. 'You don't need a generator, you just buy this truck.' This midsized electric truck is just the first type of vehicle that can be built on the new EV platform. This new manufacturing system will allow Ford to make a 'family' of affordable electric vehicles with multiple body styles, the company says, that will be available both for U.S. and export markets. The prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries will also be assembled in America—not imported from China, the company notes—at Ford's BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall, Michigan. American EV manufacturing Ford is investing nearly $2 billion in the Louisville Assembly Plant to implement this new system; it will begin reconfiguring the plant for the new assembly line later this year. That plant will secure 2,200 hourly jobs. Currently, the Louisville Assembly Plant employs 2,800 hourly workers, meaning there will be 600 fewer jobs with this new assembly line. Some of those workers who may be ready to retire will take a buyout offer, and others may transfer to nearby Ford plants. The automaker says there are no plans for layoffs. But there is room to grow, the company adds, as the platform scales up in Louisville. The $2 billion to transform the Louisville plant is part of a $5 billion effort from Ford to overhaul its EV production. That includes $3 billion committed to the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan, which will secure 1,700 jobs to assemble LFP batteries. Ford's new Universal EV Platform is a 'bet' the company is making, Farley says, on the future of EV production and on American manufacturing. 'There are no guarantees with this project,' he adds. 'There is risk.' Farley called out competitors, saying Ford could have moved this project to South Korea or Japan for cheaper labor costs and access to lower cost suppliers. 'But that's not the way we do things at Ford,' he said. With the American automotive industry at a 'crossroads' and Chinese EV competition getting only more intense, Ford needed a radical new approach. Farley calls this new EV platform a 'Model T Moment' for Ford. 'Our goal was to put up affordable, unbelievably great product within reach of millions of Americans, built in the U.S. by U.S. workers, and not be imported,' Farley says. 'Why hasn't anyone done that? Because it's really, really hard.' Shares of Ford Motor Co (NYSE: F) rose in early trading on Monday following the announcement, but were largely flat by midday. The stock is up more than 15% year to date.

Ford's Secret Weapon to Beat Tesla Is a $30,000 EV Truck
Just as the American EV market braces for a potential collapse, Ford is making a shocking pivot. With federal tax credits set to disappear on September 30 and demand expected to plummet, the automaker is doubling down with an additional $2 billion investment in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). But it's doing so with a new strategy borrowed not from its American rivals, but directly from China. The centerpiece of this bet is a new midsize electric pickup with a targeted base price of just $30,000. CEO Jim Farley announced, on Monday, the unnamed vehicle at an event in Louisville, Kentucky, where it will be assembled, with a planned market arrival in 2027. 'This new truck, based on this universal platform, is going to be more spacious inside than the RAV4, the best-selling car in the United States,' Farley declared, directly targeting the king of the gasoline SUV market. 'But it will have a frunk and it will have a whole pickup truck bed behind it. No one has seen this kind of flexibility.' Recent reports suggest the new EV pickup could be a revival of the Ranchero. According to the site Ford Authority, the company has filed a new trademark for the name, specifically for use on electric pickup trucks. The Ranchero, a car-truck hybrid not seen on U.S. roads since 1979, was a cult classic that offered the comfort of a sedan with the utility of a pickup bed. This move marks a radical departure for Ford. It's a break from its American competitors, notably Tesla, which has focused on premium vehicles like the commercially struggling Cybertruck. It's also a break from Ford's own profitable strategy of selling large, expensive pickups and SUVs like the F-150 and Expedition. Instead, Ford is adopting a strategy that looks much more like that of Chinese automaker BYD, which has become the world's largest EV seller by specializing in affordable electric cars. The cheapest BYD EV, the Seagull, starts at the equivalent of just $9,700 in China. This focus on affordability has allowed BYD to steal massive market share from Tesla in both China and Europe. After the Mustang, Ford Is Teasing the Return of Another Beloved Car As an EV Farley acknowledged that many current EVs don't address what buyers actually want. 'A computer can have much lower costs—that's why we redid this platform… to bring the costs down,' he told CNBC. So how does Ford plan to build a low-cost, high-performance pickup that no other American automaker has managed? By completely reinventing its design and manufacturing process. A secret 'skunkworks' team created, the carmaker said, the new 'Ford Universal EV Platform,' a simplified architecture using 20% fewer parts and 25% fewer fasteners. The wiring harness alone is 4,000 feet shorter. The battery is another key. Ford is manufacturing its own cobalt-free LFP prismatic batteries in Michigan. This chemistry is, Ford claimed, significantly cheaper, and its design allows it to serve as a structural part of the truck's floor, saving space and cost. Finally, Ford has reinvented the factory itself. Instead of the traditional moving assembly line, the new truck will be built using an 'assembly tree.' The vehicle is built in three main sub-assemblies—the front, the rear, and the structural battery floor with the interior already attached—which are then joined at the end. Ford claims this revolutionary process is 15% faster and considerably simpler. 'Our idea is that the people working here in Louisville will be able to buy this car and spend money on other things they love, like vacations, their home, and their children's education,' Farley said. This new truck is a direct challenge to the entire auto industry. But it comes as Ford's own EV division is struggling. In the second quarter of 2025, the unit recorded an operating loss of $1.3 billion. The company is betting that this radical new approach, borrowed from China and powered by American innovation, is the only way to finally make EVs profitable for the company and affordable for everyone else.
