Anderson Peters had crossed the 90 meter mark with a throw of 91.06 meters in the Diamond League held in Doha this season. But now Neeraj has gone ahead of him. Julian Weber of Germany is in third place with 1407 points while Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan is in fourth place with 1370 points. Two-time consecutive Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra lost the first place in the rankings immediately after the Paris Olympics on 17 September 2024. But with his consistent performance, Neeraj has now again become the world's number one javelin thrower. Neeraj started this season by winning the invitational tournament in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
In the Doha leg of the Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra created a new national record by throwing 90.23 meters and secured second place. Neeraj then secured second place in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland, but recently secured first place in the Diamond League held in Paris with a throw of 88.16 meters. Due to which he has come to the top and now Neeraj will be seen playing in the Neeraj Chopra Classic tournament starting from July 5.

In a poignant moment, young players lined up on either side of the road and raised their sticks to pay their last respects as his hearse made its way to the Maidan tent. Officials from Hockey Bengal, the oldest association for the sport in the country, were also present. His son Leander Paes was inconsolable, with Ganguly and others comforting the tennis legend by placing their arms around him and offering words of support in his hour of grief. The mass was held at St Thomas' Church, Middleton Row. Among those present were former India cricketer Arun Lal and Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, who joined the bereaved family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity in bidding farewell to the player who was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics. The funeral services were followed by the interment at the Lower Circular Road Cemetery on AJC Bose Road. At the graveside, flowers were laid and candles lit, creating an atmosphere filled with emotion. His final journey began with a stop at the Hockey Bengal tent, where Tirkey was present to pay his last tributes. Flags from his former club East Bengal, where he started his journey, and Mohun Bagan, with whom he won nine Beighton Cup titles, and Hockey Bengal were draped over the coffin. City-based industrialist Noomi Mehta, who had once played rugby alongside Paes at the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, was also seen consoling the tennis legend. Paes, who died on Thursday at the age of 80 due to age-related illness and Parkinson's disease, was remembered as an all-round sportsman—a midfielder in hockey, a rugby international, and an eminent sports medicine expert in the country. 'Dr. Paes' absence will always remain in the hearts of sports fans, sports fraternities, and many other hockey players. As a player, as a doctor, he has supported the players a lot," Tirkey was quoted as saying to PTI. 'During the camp, he used to stay with the team, take care of the players, treat them, for many years, free of cost. 'As far as I am concerned, personally I saw him from close quarters during the Athens Olympics in 2004," he recalled. Tirkey praised Paes' contribution to Indian sport and his pioneering role in bringing scientific methods into player management."Today we are talking about sports science, and how players can advance in sports through this. 'But doctor have brought this in many years ago, and used to pay attention to this. Today, you are seeing the result of this." 'In Indian sports, for the first time, we saw from one family, father and son winning Olympics medals — Dr. Paes in hockey and then Leander in tennis. His mother was also the Indian basketball team captain. So it was a complete sports family." Paes also served as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002. 'Dr. Paes absence will always be there. And we will never forget his contribution to hockey and the players and sports in general," Tirkey added. After retiring as a player, Paes devoted himself full-time to sports medicine, serving as a consultant with the BCCI, Asian Cricket Council, All India Football Federation, and the Indian Olympic Association, besides travelling with the Indian Davis Cup team. Hockey Legend's Home To Be Destroyed In Varanasi 'Beautification' Drive
Last Updated: Mohammad Shahid's ancestral home in Varanasi is being demolished for road-widening. Shahid, an Olympic gold medalist, was born there in 1960. His family wants a memorial. Hockey legend and Olympics winner Mohammad Shahid's century-old ancestral home is being demolished in Varanasi under a road-widening and beautification drive. According to The Times of India, the drive is part of a 9.3 km-long four-lane project, which has already claimed around 600 structures. The house was built in 1920. Shahid was born there on April 14, 1960, and was brought up to be one of India's best Hockey players. He was a key member of the team that won Gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the last time that the country won the prize in its national sport. He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1980–81 and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, in 1986. Shahid died in July 2016 at the age of 56 after battling liver disease. The family has come to terms with the demolition and has been compensated for it, too, but his widow, Parveen, and son, Kaif, said they want the government to build a memorial in Shahid's honor. 'This house has been home to four generations. Even after we shifted in 2015, Shahid would visit daily. It inspired many young hockey players who dreamt of becoming Olympians," Parveen said in the report. 'We support the development work, but after this historic house is gone, a memorial or a square should be established in his name." Kaif said, 'Our ancestral house will be demolished in a couple of days. All we want is for the government should create a memorial in his name." KK Singh, the executive engineer, of the Public Works Department in the holy city said the suggestion is being considered. 'This is a great suggestion. People should know about Kashi and the country's pride. I will discuss this with the district magistrate and the family," he said.
