Austin Dillon becomes 1st repeat Cook Out 400 winner in 15 years
August 17 - Austin Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet came to life late Saturday night, leading him to repeat as winner of the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway and join the playoff field in the NASCAR Cup Series' penultimate regular-season race in Richmond, Va. In successfully defending his title, Dillon became the race's first repeat victor since Denny Hamlin accomplished the feat in 2009 and 2010. The Richard Childress Racing driver wrecked his way to victory last season through leader Joey Logano and Hamlin off the final turn. But an aggressive pit stop -- coming in right after passing leader Ryan Blaney on Lap 340 -- allowed the 35-year-old from North Carolina to beat Alex Bowman's No. 48 Chevrolet by 2.471 seconds for his sixth career win and put him in the 16-car postseason. Blaney finished third, followed by Logano, who started last for just the fourth time in his career. Austin Cindric was fifth. A Chevrolet driver has now won three of the past five races at the ¾-mile short track. Polesitter Ryan Preece crept away from AJ Allmendinger and Tyler Reddick after earning his second career pole on Friday, while Hamlin slid up to third to start the season's fourth short-track race. Despite most everyone taking tires at the midpoint as the rubber fell off, Preece stayed out and lost the lead to Reddick late. Bubba Wallace, Hamlin, Dillon and Cindric rounded out the top five in the 70-lap first stage. Wallace's No. 23 led fellow Toyota driver Christopher Bell in the early portions of Stage 2, but after a full green-flag run in Stage 1, the second segment featured three cautions for incidents, including a 16-car pile that started with Chase Briscoe getting hit by Kyle Busch in Turn 3. The melee included Hamlin, William Byron, Brad Keselowski and Reddick, who led 41 laps, among others. The No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet of Chase Elliott was retired from the event and finished last in 38th. Wallace earned the top bonus points by clinching the segment. Daniel Suarez, Blaney, Dillon and Bowman were the next four finishers behind Wallace, who led a race-high 123 laps. However, with Dillon pacing the field, Wallace's left-front tire came off as pit stops began near Lap 300, ending a strong run by the Brickyard 400 winner in Indianapolis last month. --Field Level Media

Rockies produce 6-run eighth to surge past Diamondbacks
August 17 - Tyler Freeman hit a two-run homer to cap a six-run eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-7 in Denver on Saturday night. Warming Bernabel also homered, Brenton Doyle, Jordan Beck and Yanquiel Fernandez had two hits apiece and rookie Ryan Rolison (1-0) picked up his first major league win for Colorado. Adrian Del Castillo homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Ketel Marte also had two hits for Arizona. The Rockies trailed 7-2 but scored twice in the bottom of the seventh against starter Ryne Nelson, who gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out four without a walk over 6 1/3 innings. Colorado then surged ahead in the eighth against reliever Andrew Hoffman (1-1). With one out, Beck doubled and Bernabel and Kyle Karros walked to load the bases. Doyle doubled off the wall in right field to drive in two and chase Hoffman. Kyle Farmer followed with a pinch-hit single to left off of Andrew Saalfrank and, after Ryan Ritter grounded out, Freeman homered to left. It was his second homer of the season. Victor Vodnik pitched a clean ninth for his sixth save. Gurriel's RBI single in the first gave the D-backs a 1-0 lead, Bernabel's fourth home run of the season leading off the second inning tied it, but Arizona answered in the third. Geraldo Perdomo scored on a throwing error and Marte came home on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1. Consecutive two-out doubles by Hunter Goodman and Beck in the bottom of the third pulled the Rockies within a run at 3-2, but the D-backs stretched the lead in the fifth. Perdomo led off with a single, stole second and scored on Gurriel's two-out bloop single to center. Del Castillo doubled to left to bring home Gurriel and end the night for Colorado starter Chase Dollander. Dollander allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Del Castillo's two-run homer in the seventh, his second of the season, made it 7-2. --Field Level Media

Ramon Urias plays hero as Astros outlast Orioles
August 17 - Ramon Urias drove home Carlos Correa with a fielder's choice grounder in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Houston Astros outlasted the visiting Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Saturday. Urias beat out a potential inning-ending double play by the Orioles, plating Correa in the process. Baltimore reliever Keegan Akin (4-3) loaded the bases with an intentional walk of Christian Walker before Urias came to bat. Astros right-hander Enyel De Los Santos (4-3) earned the win with two perfect innings of relief. The Orioles finished 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Baltimore utilized a pair of two-run home runs to rally from an early three-run deficit. Dylan Carlson smacked his sixth homer of the year in the top of the fifth inning before Jackson Holliday delivered his two-run blast -- and 15th homer of the season -- in the eighth following a leadoff walk from Carlson. Holliday knotted the score at 4-4 with his 381-foot shot to right field off Astros reliever Bennett Sousa. Baltimore threatened again in the ninth when Dylan Beavers stroked a leadoff double off Astros reliever Bryan Abreu for his first-career hit in his big-league debut. Abreu, though, rallied to strike out the side and strand Beavers at third base. Orioles left-hander Cade Povich, who entered in the second inning after opener Rico Garcia worked a scoreless frame, matched his career high of 10 strikeouts over five innings. But Povich allowed an RBI single to Mauricio Dubon in the second and loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth before Jacob Melton and Correa had consecutive RBI singles for a 3-0 Houston lead. After the Orioles closed to within a run, Jose Altuve smacked his 22nd home run of the year in the seventh off Kade Strowd to double the advantage to 4-2. Astros right-hander Jason Alexander produced his third consecutive quality start and entered the top of the fifth inning vying for his third scoreless appearance in succession. Alexander allowed his first hit with one out in the third when Carlson smacked a triple to right-center field, but he immediately erased Carlson when he fielded a sharp grounder from Holliday and initiated a successful rundown of Carlson between third base and home plate. Alexander recorded consecutive fly-ball outs to open the fifth before surrendering a single to Daniel Johnson. Carlson followed with his second home run of the series, a 385-foot blast to right field that sliced the Astros' lead to 3-2. Alexander rallied by retiring the final four batters he faced, three via strikeout, and allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts over six innings. --Field Level Media
