Malay Mail2 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — National squash ace S. Sivasangari's hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the 2024/2025 PSA Squash Tour Finals were dashed after she suffered her second consecutive defeat in Group B on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old went down to Egypt's Fayrouz Aboelkheir 11-10, 9-11, 7-11 in a closely fought 41-minute battle at the Revival Film Studio in Toronto.
Sivasangari took the first game 11-10 but was unable to maintain her momentum, eventually falling 9-11, 7-11 in the next two games.
This follows her opening-day loss to second seed Olivia Weaver of the United States, where the Kedah-born player lost in straight games, 9-11, 9-11.
Weaver continued her winning form in Group B, overcoming Japan's Satomi Watanabe 3-11, 11-6, 11-6 in 31 minutes.
Group B remains open for the second semi-final spot, with Watanabe and Aboelkheir each recording one win ahead of today's final group match.
The PSA Tour Finals features the top eight players in the world, divided into two groups, with only the top two from each group progressing to the semi-finals. — Bernama

Education Ministry says investigating claim Pakistani national officiated school sports event in Perak

IPOH, June 27 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) is investigating claims that a Pakistani national officiated a school sports event in the Kerian district, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. 'We are looking into the matter,' she told reporters briefly after attending the Perak-level Maal Hijrah 1447H celebration, which was officiated by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah here last night. A video recently circulated on social media showed the man being given the honour of launching the athletics meet at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sama Gagah in Simpang Empat Semanggol. Meanwhile, Fadhlina expressed her gratitude to the Sultan Nazrin for posthumously conferring the Saidina Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Award on her late mother, Datin Dr Siti Zalikhah Md Nor. 'She was a lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and a defender of syariah law. Empowering women in all aspects was her life's work and area of expertise. 'On behalf of my family, I would like to thank His Royal Highness and the state government for this meaningful recognition,' she said. Earlier, Sultan Nazrin presented the award to Fadhlina, who accepted it on her late mother's behalf. — Bernama

National Training Centre construction in Putrajaya 50 days ahead of schedule, says FAM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The construction of the National Training Centre (NTC) in Precinct 5, Putrajaya is progressing according to the original schedule and is expected to be completed without any delay. Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said the project, which is divided into Phase One and Two, is still ahead of schedule by 50 days. He said the two pitches, namely natural grass (bermuda) and hybrid in Phase One, are expected to be completed this year while the artificial turf and several other important facilities will follow in Phase Two. 'Actually, this project is ahead of the original schedule by 50 days as a result of close cooperation from all parties. For Phase One, the two pitches may be completed between September and October. 'For Phase 2, the facilities as issued by the Public Works Department (JKR) will be announced in mid-July. For the artificial turf, the roof construction needs to start first,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. Earlier, FAM today shared the latest photos of NTC construction site in conjunction with the one-year anniversary of the project's groundbreaking ceremony on June 26, 2024. Phase One of NTC includes a football field with different types of grass, that is also fully equipped with floodlights as well as a quality drainage system, landscaping and a six-metre (m) high fence around the field area, which is expected to be completed in December 2026. The project will be followed by Phase Two involving the construction of the artificial turf, a 1,682.8 square metre building that includes a gymnasium, multipurpose room, players' changing rooms, rehabilitation room and surau, in addition to the construction of the roof for the artificial turf. Phase Two is expected to be fully completed in December 2027. Located near the Putrajaya Equestrian Park, NTC is built on a 5.2-hectare site with Phase One of the project using funds from the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) totalling US$5.2 million (approximately RM24 million) while Phase Two is using an allocation of RM45 million from the Malaysian Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports. — Bernama
