Minority school locked over unpaid rent in Telangana

HYDERABAD: On the first day of school reopening, teachers and students of the Telangana Minority Residential School, Bagh Lingampally, were seen standing outside the campus gate after the building owner locked it due to 13 months of unpaid rent.
The gate was later opened following assurances from Telangana Government Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGMREIS) officials that the dues would be cleared soon.
Sources said that rent for around 40 Telangana Minority Residential Schools in the city is pending. For the Bagh Lingampally school alone, rent arrears amount to around Rs 6 lakh.
'As the rent had not been released for 13 months, the owner locked the school gate. It was just for a few hours. Once officials from the state government spoke to him and assured payment, it was reopened,' said Vanisri, the school principal.
'We locked the building as the rent hasn't been paid for 13 months. Earlier, the state government used to clear rent monthly, but after COVID, payments became irregular. Despite repeated visits to government offices, no concrete solution was given. After officials promised to clear five months' rent immediately, we opened the gate,' the building owner said.

PU's cafeteria library plan in limbo

Patna: For scholars, what could be better than reading one's favourite book, sipping a cuppa of piping hot tea or coffee, at a calm corner, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This is exactly what Patna University (PU) had planned for its students six years back, but the ambitious scheme of having a cafeteria library, the first of its kind in the state, seems to have gone awry. This kind of unique library, the likes of which exist only in a few universities such as Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, was proposed to create a better academic environment on the PU campus. In fact, the decision to open a cafeteria library was announced by the then PU vice-chancellor (VC), Rash Bihari Prasad Singh, in 2019 during the centenary celebrations of the university's central library. But, the university's proposal failed to take off in time owing to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Implementation of this scheme was then initiated in 2022 and a new building for the proposed cafeteria library was constructed adjacent to the PU central library on Ashok Rajpath. As per the PU's scheme, a maximum of 35 scholars can sit there with desktop computers and study all the e-books and research journals available in the National Academic Depository (NAD), with a provision of tea or coffee round-the-clock. Central library's assistant director Ashok Kumar Jha said that after waiting for the sanction of necessary grants from the state govt for the purchase of about 40 desktop computers, it was decided that they would be purchased by the university from its own internal resources. The then vice-cancellor Girish Kumar Chaudhary had asserted that even if the university did not receive funds from the govt, it would purchase computers from its own fund. But, due to reasons best known to the authorities, the computers could not be purchased till date. Giving details of the proposed cafeteria library, PU dean, students' welfare, Anil Kumar, said it would remain open round-the-clock. "Students will be able to visit the library in shifts of one or two hours. Girls will be allowed during the day hours preferably, while boys will be welcomed round-the-clock. Students residing in different university hostels will be able to utilise its services even at night. This e-library will be connected to the NAD, which will allow the students to access millions of books and research journals," he said. However, Jha pointed out that the university library has already introduced radio frequency identification technology, facilitating automatic issue and return of books. "A total of 1.5 lakh out of 2.5 lakh books in its possession has been linked with their technology and the rest are in the process of being linked. Besides, students can have easy access to all the books and journals available in the libraries across the world as the university has been connected with the govt's scheme of 'one nation, one subscription' with effect from Jan," he added.
