Schneider Electric Accelerates the Development and Deployment of AI Factories at Scale With NVIDIA

Paris [NVIDIA GTC], June 25: Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced it is collaborating with NVIDIA to serve the growing demand for sustainable, AI-ready infrastructure. Together, Schneider Electric and NVIDIA are advancing research and development (R & D) initiatives for power, cooling, controls, and high-density rack systems to enable the next generation of AI factories across Europe and beyond.
This unique global partnership, announced during NVIDIA GTC Paris, brings together the world leaders in sustainability and accelerated computing to support the European Union's AI infrastructure ambitions and its "InvestAI" initiative, which plans to mobilize a EUR200 billion investment in AI.
Leveraging its expertise in AI-ready infrastructure, sustainability, and grid coordination, Schneider Electric and NVIDIA are together responding to the European Commission's "AI Continent Action Plan," which outlines a shared mission to set up at least 13 AI factories across Europe, while establishing up to five AI gigafactories.

New NVIDIA-Enabled Infrastructure Solutions
In support of today's announcement, Schneider Electric has also unveiled a suite of AI-ready data center solutions, including new EcoStruxure™ Pod and Rack Infrastructure. Designed to accelerate AI developments globally, the Prefabricated Modular EcoStruxure Pod Data Center is a scalable, pod-based architecture, enabling rapid AI data center deployment.
As part of this, a new Schneider Electric Open Compute Project (OCP) inspired rack system has also been developed to support the NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 platform that uses the NVIDIA MGX modular architecture, integrating Schneider Electric into NVIDIA HGX and MGX ecosystems for the first time.
These announcements build on a series of milestones shared by the two global leaders earlier this year, including Schneider Electric and ETAP unveiling the world's first digital twin for electrical and large-scale power systems in AI factories using the NVIDIA Omniverse Blueprint.
Together, Schneider Electric and NVIDIA have also co-developed a series of full electrical and liquid cooling-based reference designs as an approved CDU vendor for NVIDIA -- many of which also include solutions from Motivair's liquid cooling portfolio, following its acquisition by Schneider Electric in March 2025.
Through this expanded and deepened strategic partnership, Schneider Electric and NVIDIA will continue to accelerate their infrastructure initiatives, fast-tracking new product rollouts and reference designs to build the AI factories of the future.

Xi Jinping's weaponisation of rare-earth elements will ultimately backfire

Soon after the blockade started, the panic began. When China choked off the export of rare-earth elements in April, producers and politicians around the world were quick to sound the alarm. The country provides 90% of the world's supply of refined rare earths, used to make the strong magnets inside almost anything with an electric motor, from vacuum cleaners to cars. Ford halted a factory line in Chicago; carmakers in India and Japan curtailed production. The car industry is in 'panic mode', said one boss. Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, thundered against China's 'dominance' and 'blackmail'. At first glance the use of rare earths as a weapon is working—and Xi Jinping, China's supreme leader, is getting what he wants. After the flow of rare earths resumed, America's president lifted controls on the sale of some Nvidia chips, and delayed a hefty increase in import duties; on August 11th America and China further extended their trade truce. In July Mrs von der Leyen went cap-in-hand to Beijing, seeking looser restrictions. But in the long term, China's rare-earths weapon will backfire. The new controls are a sign of just how sophisticated China's economic arsenal has become. After a political spat in 2010 it briefly blocked the exports of rare earths to Japan; in a fit of pique in 2020, it increased duties on Australian Shiraz and grass-fed beef. Now, however, Mr Xi has put in place a system of export controls that seek to exploit China's heft in global supply chains. A licensing scheme covering more than 700 goods, including manufacturing equipment and critical minerals, began operating in December. Officials keep careful track of the ultimate consumer of the products, and can revoke licences. Even though rare-earths exports have resumed in recent weeks, for instance, sales to Western armsmakers are still choked off. The aim is clear. Mr Xi wants to indigenise supply chains, so that China is not at the mercy of its enemies for critical inputs—an effort that was turbocharged after America banned the export of advanced chips to China. He also hopes to use China's control of supply chains as a source of power over others. As long ago as April 2020 he told officials that dependency on China could be a 'deterrent' against foreigners who would 'artificially cut off supply'. The difficulty for Mr Xi, though, is that export controls have unintended consequences. Confronted with a ban, companies and entrepreneurs find ways around the shortage. China's dominance in rare earths stems not from exclusive control of the world's deposits, nor from the technological sophistication of the refining process, but instead from efficiency, scale and convenience. And the more it uses rare earths (or indeed other commodities) as a weapon, the more it will encourage others to find alternatives—weakening its future firepower. Start with the nature of China's chokehold. Despite their name, rare earths are relatively abundant; less than half of all known reserves are found in China. Refining is a painstaking and polluting business, but is not as technologically complex as advanced chipmaking. China's grip on rare earths is therefore not as strong as the West's on cutting-edge chips, and easier to work around. Indeed, until the 1980s, America was the biggest supplier of the minerals. The dominance of China came about because it was more willing to accept the environmental consequences, and has since been cemented by its gargantuan size, which allows rare earths to be mined cheaply. Efforts by China to restrict the flow of rare earths have already spurred efforts to find alternatives. After the spat in 2010, Japan invested in rare-earths mines and began building stockpiles; although it still imports rare earths from China, its dependence has fallen from 90% to 60%. Earlier this year the Pentagon took a stake in MP Materials, a miner in California, with which Apple has signed a deal. All told, 22 new mining projects are expected to be up and running by 2030. Trendy 'geoeconomic' theory points out that even a small erosion of China's dominance in rare earths could weaken its power disproportionately. Reducing its share from 90% to 80% may not sound like much, but it would imply a doubling in size of alternative sources of supply, giving China's customers far more room for manoeuvre. Even so, this diversification could still take years. What could Western governments do to speed it up? They have a responsibility, of course, to secure their military supply chains. They could also streamline the process of approving mining permits (which in America can take up to a decade), and could revisit environmental rules. Lowering trade barriers would also help the rest of the world mimic China's scale. It would be a mistake, though, for governments to seek to protect the entire economy from the impact of shortages. That is because a far more powerful—and underappreciated—response to shortages is innovation. Just think of how America's chip controls have prompted Chinese firms such as Huawei and DeepSeek to develop new techniques, or how a cobalt crunch in 2022 quickly eased, partly as electric-vehicle-makers found ways to do without the metal. Similarly, startups across the West are now working on the recycling of rare earths, and on the development of alternative ways to make magnets and motors that do without them. BMW and Renault, two European carmakers, already sell electric vehicles that do not use rare earths in their motors. Other companies could follow suit. China's restrictions will cause disruption as producers rejig their processes, but long-term alternatives do exist. From rare to well done The more China uses its rare-earths weapon, therefore, the weaker it will become. Time and again, enterprise and ingenuity have prevailed over attempts to control the flow of goods. China itself learned that lesson as its technology firms responded to America's export controls on chips. It may now be about to learn it again.

This can only be achieving with the democratization of AI talent and dismantling the invisible walls of the industry, building South-North skill corridors, and closing the rural-urban gap at home. Mutual recognition of credentials and open policy sandboxes can empower coders from localized AI skilling hubs in Tier 2 and 3 Indian cities to launch world-class models on equal footing with Silicon Valley." His keynote came at a moment of global concern over the risks of technological exclusion and the centralization of AI power. While private companies dominate AI development in the West, Sanjay emphasized India's alternative model centres on policy, public sector innovation, and community-scale application. Government-backed initiatives such as the India AI Mission, Anuvadini, AI Kosh, and Bhashini are building a comprehensive ecosystem to foster AI innovation, strengthening regional language capabilities, collecting inclusive datasets, and collaborating with startups to build India-specific AI solutions. 'India's AI story isn't about catching up. It is about setting the pace for the world. India and EU need to talk more about carbon tax

By Nancy Gupta India and the European Union (EU) are aiming to finalise their long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. As of May, 11 rounds of negotiations have closed chapters on regulatory practices, customs, intellectual property, and mutual assistance, but there's been no progress on the contentious subject of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). With CBAM's implementation from January 2026, the clock is ticking for both sides to address this looming issue within their trade pact. The recent India-UK FTA, concluded in May 2025, notably sidestepped CBAM and carbon border taxes. This omission leaves Indian exports exposed to future UK carbon taxes (the UK's CBAM will arrive in 2027), although India has reserved the right to retaliate if its exports suffer. This approach — keeping CBAM outside formal trade negotiations — may not serve India's long-term interests, especially as the EU pushes ahead with CBAM as the bedrock of its climate and trade policy. The EU's firm stance includes expanding CBAM's reach across industries and streamlining compliance, even as many developing countries protest its 'unilateral, punitive, and discriminatory' character. Trade patterns already suggest CBAM's impact. The EU's imports of CBAM-regulated goods fell by 28 per cent in 2023 and dropped another 6 per cent in 2024, with trade flows shifting toward slightly modified versions of regulated products to circumvent CBAM. India, a top 10 exporter of CBAM-covered goods to the EU, has seen such exports grow 7.4 per cent annually over the past six years — faster than its overall EU-bound exports. In 2024, about 24 per cent of these CBAM goods by value went to the EU. Clearly, India's export interests are substantial, and with its share in the EU's import basket rising from 4.61 per cent in 2019 to 5.41 per cent in 2024, inaction on CBAM is no longer strategic. Many developing nations, including India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and China, see CBAM as an infringement on their right to development and a threat to climate equity principles. But unlike others, India stands out for its determined green transition. It hit its 2030 target for 50 per cent installed non-fossil electricity five years early and is rapidly scaling up hydrogen and solar infrastructure. These achievements position India to credibly negotiate better CBAM terms and showcase domestic climate ambition. However, global climate governance remains inequitable. The US withdrew from the Paris Agreement (effectively from January 2026), reducing its climate funding obligations, while the EU has declined to exempt even the LDCs from CBAM. As other major economies, such as Japan, Australia, and Canada, move toward similar carbon border measures, the burden on less-developed economies will inevitably grow. India has criticised CBAM as violating multilateral norms and called for such measures to be debated in broader international forums, not imposed by one trading bloc. Yet, without proactive FTA negotiation on CBAM, India risks losing leverage and export competitiveness. Instead, India must prioritise a dual strategy: Cementing its own green transition and seeking integration into global green value chains. A major criticism of the EU's CBAM from developing countries is the lack of a binding commitment to direct CBAM revenues toward supporting their green transitions. While EU officials insist CBAM is a climate tool, not a revenue-raiser, the absence of financial support exacerbates climate injustice. Rather than accepting the costs imposed by CBAM, India should consider implementing a domestic carbon tax or export levy, echoing the EU's system, to retain revenue and fund its own green transition. This approach would also foster policy parity and potentially qualify Indian exporters for deductions on CBAM liabilities at the EU border if verified carbon costs are already paid domestically. India is already laying the groundwork for a robust carbon pricing regime. Its carbon pricing instruments include a coal cess (now under the GST), climate levies under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, and the ongoing development of a Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). For example, current policy translates to an implicit carbon cost of ~$15-17/ton on Indian aluminium, and a transparent accounting of these levies could help Indian exporters avoid double taxation under CBAM. India's Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme has advanced energy efficiency but falls short of full CBAM equivalence. Strengthening domestic measurement, reporting, and verification frameworks and aligning Indian carbon pricing with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) will be key to gaining CBAM recognition. Learning from Thailand, which embedded its carbon tax within existing fuel taxes to minimise economic disruption, India can pursue a harmonised, trade-compliant climate policy while protecting its export interests. Globally, as other major trading partners, like China and Turkey, consider their own CBAM-like policies, India, the world's sixth-largest supplier of CBAM-regulated goods to the EU, cannot afford to wait. The impending expansion of CBAM's sectoral scope will expose more of India's CBAM-affected exports. Multilateral engagement, robust domestic climate measures, and assertive FTA negotiations are essential to ensure India's economy remains resilient and competitive in a rapidly changing green trade order.
