Bengal: 4 held after 8 cops injured, bike torched in Kolkata suburb shop clash
Kolkata: Four men were arrested after eight police personnel, including a woman constable, were injured in a clash between two groups over the opening of a shop in a Kolkata suburb on Wednesday, police said.
Stones were pelted, police vehicles were damaged, and a two-wheeler was torched in the middle of the road, officers aware of the development said. The police had to resort to a lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob, following which prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed.
'Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS have been issued. A few police personnel, including an IPS officer, sustained injuries after a mob pelted stones and bricks. Police had to resort to lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob,' a senior officer said.
The clash took place close to the Rabindra Nagar police station. The police said that when a team of officers went to the spot to tackle the situation, they were attacked by a mob.
'They came in hundreds and were indiscriminately pelting stones and glass bottles. We were few in number. Many police personnel were injured. A brick hit my head,' a lady police constable said.
A large police contingent and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed to bring the situation under control. 'The situation is now under control. Raids are going on to arrest those who attacked police personnel,' an officer said.

The incident triggered a political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
'In Ward No. 7 of Maheshtala Municipality (Metiabruz Assembly), an illegal attempt was made to construct shops right in front of a Shiv temple near Rabindranagar Police Station. When local Hindu residents objected and built a small Tulsi Mandir instead, mobs launched violent attacks on Hindu homes and temples,' BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya wrote on X.
Kolkata's mayor Firhad Hakim said, 'Violence won't be tolerated. Police are doing their job. People of all religions live here peacefully. I am not bothered by what the BJP is saying. They incite communal violence. Strict actions will be taken against those who take law in their own hands.'
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP legislator and leader of the opposition in the state legislative assembly, said that BJP legislators will protest in the ongoing assembly session on Thursday.

'The world is watching India with great interest. But Punjab's isolation from this national growth trajectory is unfortunate,' Puri remarked. Cheema hits back Meanwhile, Punjab finance minister Harpal Cheema hit back, stating that the BJP government had plunged India into a debt spiral. He said that when the BJP assumed power in 2014, the nation's debt stood at approximately ₹55 lakh crore, which has since ballooned to ₹215 lakh crore. On Puri's allegations about Punjab not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme, he said the central scheme is riddled with many problems that prevent many from receiving its benefits. On the contrary, Cheema said, AAP's Mohalla Clinics had provided treatment to millions of poor families without any restriction. He also questioned Puri about the BJP's 'unfulfilled promises' of depositing ₹15 lakh into the account of every Indian citizen and creating two crore jobs annually, among others.

The chief minister released water from the Mettur Dam for irrigation in delta districts, and announced an increase in the procurement price of paddy to Rs 2,500 per quintal. 'Farmers will now get Rs 2,500 per quintal. Accordingly, the procurement price of paddy will be increased to Rs 131 for the normal variety and Rs 156 for the short variety. The normal variety will be purchased at Rs 2,500 and the short variety at Rs 2,545.' Taking a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech in Madurai, Stalin said, 'Some people cannot bear the functioning of the Dravidian model of governance. A few days ago, Amit Shah came to Madurai. He criticised the DMK government saying we only make announcements and do nothing. He claimed that the DMK government is reversing the schemes provided by the BJP-led government at the centre. The truth is that the state government is providing additional funds because these schemes cannot be implemented using the funds allocated by the union government. The state government is allocating over 50% of the funds for schemes that bear Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name.' Every penny given to the Centre by Tamil Nadu returned, says BJP leader Annamalai
COIMBATORE: Former president of Tamil Nadu BJP, K Annamalai, on Thursday said the two schemes – Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam and Muthalvar Marundhagam – introduced by the TN government in competition with the central government's Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma scheme and Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Periyojana (PMBJP) have utterly failed. He said the Muthalvar Marundhagam scheme has failed to attract people and also affected the supply chain of the PMBJP scheme. He was speaking to the media in Coimbatore after releasing a book detailing the BJP government's electoral promises and its accomplishments. The book launch was part of the celebration of 11 years of the BJP rule at the centre. Stating that the BJP has transparently shared information about its promises, Annamalai criticised the DMK government for failing to fulfill at least 50 of its 512 electoral promises, even after completing four years of its rule in TN. He highlighted that TN has contributed Rs 4,36,136 crore to the central government over the last four years, while the total transfer from the centre to TN has been Rs 5,47,380 crore. 'Every penny given to the centre from the state has been returned. We will share the data, and the state government can verify it,' Annamalai said.
