How Ludhiana West bypoll altered Rupani's fate: Was to leave with wife on June 5, rescheduled UK visit for campaigning, says Jakhar
Chandigarh: Punjab BJP affairs in-charge and former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, had rescheduled his family visit to the United Kingdom from June 5 to June 12 owing to the Ludhiana West byelection, according to Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar.
"This is very unfortunate. This is how destiny and fate plays out that he came into harm's way. He was to leave along with his wife on June 5, but rescheduled his visit to campaign for Ludhiana West bypoll," Jakhar told TOI. "I believe his wife took the flight on June 5 itself," Jakhar added.
Rupani had campaigned for party candidate Jeewan Gupta for a week. A BJP leader said he went back to Gujarat a couple of days ago, taking a flight from Chandigarh.
Punjab BJP leader Parminder Singh Brar, while mourning the death of Rupani in a Facebook post, said Rupani was "on a solo journey to see his daughter in London. His wife had already arrived on June 5. They were supposed to travel together, but due to the Ludhiana West byelection, he postponed his trip by a week. Fate had different plans…"
Brar added, "We were just together in Ludhiana two days ago. Still, can't come to terms with the fact that he's no longer with us.
A truly wonderful person – compassionate, humble, and radiating warmth. One meeting with him and you'd never forget him."
Punjab BJP state treasurer Gurdev Sharma Debi said, "He campaigned in Ludhiana for over a week. He was so hardworking that after campaigning, he would hold meetings with party leaders and workers which would continue till late night."
Rupani was appointed as Punjab affairs in-charge of BJP in Sept 2022, days before old allies Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and BJP parted ways with each other over now repealed farm laws.
He was all praise for Jakhar when the latter was appointed as Punjab BJP president in July 2023 as the saffron party aimed to increase its mass base in the state.
Mourning Rupani's demise, Jakhar Thursday said, "He was a thorough gentleman, very sober, soft spoken and had no arrogance at all. His demise is a big loss to family, to Gujarat and to the politics as such people are very rare. I have been a big admirer of him and had a great equation with him."
Jakhar also put out a post on X to express grief with the families of plane crash victims. The post read, "The shocking news of Air India plane crash over Ahmedabad with 242 people on board is really heartbreaking. It's painful beyond words. In this sad hour my heart goes to those affected by this tragedy.

Compensate farmers before kharif sowing ends: Cong
Pune: State Congress members have prepared a report on crop damages because of the recent heavy rains and demanded the govt release compensation for farmers before kharif sowing ends. The report is based on field visits by Congress members. The party has accused the Maharashtra govt of neglecting farmers' issues. Additonally, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has sought an appointment with governor CP Radhakrishnan to submit the said report. Though the party has suspended all rallies for the next few days following the plane crash in Ahmedabad, MPCC will hold a statewide Mashal Morcha to raise various issues, including farmers' problems, thereafter. Speaking to TOI, MPCC chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said, "Our party members have visited villages to understand the existing problems. The govt is clearly neglecting farmers, whose condition is beyond imaginable. Heavy rains for three weeks have destroyed crops across the state and onion growers have suffered huge losses. That apart, fruit-growing farmers have also incurred losses. All farmers need immediate govt help, but they have only received promises, so far. " The state govt has already announced release of compensation based on reports by local officials. However, the Congress state president claimed it was not enough. "The criteria are such that farmers are barely getting any money. Our demand is they be paid Rs20,000 per acre as compensation. We also demand the govt use remote sensing technology to assess crop damage, which will help the govt speed up the process," he said. Sapkal said, "For the agrarian economy, kharif is the most important season when maximum crops are produced and revenue earned. If farmers do not get help now, the next year will be difficult for them. Therefore, our demand is the state release the money, which farmers may use for kharif sowing activities." Sule questions crores spent on rain preparedness
Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Friday said the state govt spends crores of rupees on pre-monsoon preparedness, but roads in big cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur get choked with water even if it rains slightly — raising questions over the quality of works. She held a meeting with Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on Friday to discuss the city's various issues — including waterlogging, traffic congestion and other infrastructural matters. Sule spoke to reporters after the meeting and said, "Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) claims to have spent crores of rupees on pre-monsoon preparedness. Why are the roads waterlogged then amid slight rain? It is not just Pune, but cities like Mumbai, Nashik and Nagpur are facing the same problem. The state govt promotes urbanisation, but needs to study the concept of development scientifically." She also raised the issue of dilapidated wadas in Pune. She demanded the govt come out with a solution and not wait for mishaps to happen. The Baramati MP highlighted the issue of traffic congestion in the Khadakwasla area. "The neighbourhood faces two major issues at present — traffic congestion and unclean water. We have been demanding that PMC, PMRDA and irrigation department address the water contamination issue in Khadakwasla, but there is no progress, so far. Even the traffic situation is deteriorating," she added. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
