Andrew Tate and brother charged with rape: UK prosecutors
LONDON: Avowed misogynist and social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother have been charged with several counts of rape, assault and trafficking, UK prosecutors said Wednesday.
The accusations, which date back to between 2012 to 2015, were authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service in January 2024, but have only been revealed now.
Former kickboxer Tate, 38, faces 10 charges in the UK including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution relating to three women.
His brother, Tristan, 36, has been accused of 11 similar charges against one woman.
'A European arrest warrant was issued in England in 2024, and as a result the Romanian courts ordered the extradition to the UK of Andrew and Tristan Tate,' prosecutors said in a statement.
'However, the domestic criminal matters in Romania must be settled first.'
Andrew Tate is facing legal action in several countries, including some cases where he is accused alongside his brother.
In Romania, the Tate brothers face separate allegations of trafficking minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering.
Both men, who have dual British-US nationality, have denied all charges against them.
Andrew Tate, the figurehead of the online masculinist movement, traveled to Florida with his brother in February, marking the first time they had left Romania since their 2022 arrest.
Romanian prosecutors allege that the brothers and two women set up a criminal organization in Romania in 2021 and sexually exploited several victims.
In a separate civil case in the United Kingdom, four British women have accused Andrew Tate of rape and coercive control.
Tate moved to Romania years ago after first starting a webcam business in Britain.
He leapt to fame in 2016 when he appeared on the 'Big Brother' UK reality television show, but was removed after a controversial video emerged.
He then turned to social media platforms to promote his often misogynistic and divisive views on how to be successful.
Tate is followed by more than 10.7 million people on the social network X, where he shares his angry vision of masculinity and often homophobic and racist posts.

LONDON: Israel's actions in Gaza are 'appalling and intolerable' the UK Prime Minister Keir Starter said on Wednesday amid growing international pressure to stop the slaughter of Palestinians. Aid agencies and governments around the world have all condemned the killing of dozens of Palestinians this week as they tried to access food distribution sites in the decimated territory. France and Saudi Arabia are organizing a UN conference this month about a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel. France has already said it is considering recognizing the Palestinian state during the conference. Starmer did not answer whether the UK would follow suit and recognize a Palestinian when asked in parliament Wednesday. However, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told MPs that the government was reconsidering its position on Palestinian statehood, The Guardian reported. Falconer said he was "appalled" by the killings of Palestinians this week as they gathered to approach a new aid distribution hub. "We call for an immediate and independent investigation into these events for the perpetrators to be held to account,' he said. Dozens of MPs from both the main political parties have signed letters in recent months calling for Palestine to be recognized. Starmer is facing fierce criticism from within his own Labour Party to take a tougher line on Israel. Labour MP Paula Barker said history "will not be kind" to his government unless action is taken. 'What more evidence do we need to call this exactly what it is? A deliberate policy of annexation and genocide," she said.

Growing numbers of people worldwide unhappy with Israeli state and Netanyahu, survey finds
CHICAGO: The results of a survey published this week by the Pew Research Center in Washington reveal a significant increase in the proportions of people in the US, UK and other nations, mostly in the West, who hold unfavorable views on the Israeli state and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Researchers polled 32,000 people in 24 countries. Previous surveys had been carried out in 11 of them, 13 were being surveyed for the first time. Maria Smerkovich, a research associate with Pew, told Arab News on Wednesday that the results showed conclusively that public attitudes toward Israel and the country's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, were increasingly negative, especially in America, traditionally one of the strongest advocates for Israel, and in the UK. 'The median is 62 percent have unfavorable views of the country of Israel, compared with a 29 percent median that have favorable views,' she said of the overall results. 'In about 20 of these countries, half of the population or more have unfavorable views of the country. We find that younger people and people on the left are more likely to have negative views of the country. 'In the US, views on Israel have turned more negative. The last time we asked about the favorability of Israel in the US was in 2022, before the current war (in Gaza). And at that time, a slight majority had favorable views of Israel. A smaller share had unfavorable views of Israel. 'Now (since the start of the conflict in Gaza) we've seen the tide turn, where just over half have unfavorable views of Israel and 45 percent have favorable views. So that's a leap in terms of unfavorability; it's a jump from 42 percent to 53 percent in just three years.' She continued: 'In about 10 other countries, the last time we asked about favorability of Israel was in 2013. And we have seen, in most of the countries, we have seen views turn more negative. For example in the UK in 2013, unfavorability was at 44 percent. Today, it's at 61 percent. So that's quite a jump. 'Israel's unfavorability has increased in seven countries of the 10 where we have trends,' she said adding that the proportions of unfavorable views had remained 'about the same since 2013' in France, Germany and Greece. In addition to the 'striking' increase in unfavorable views in the UK, Smerkovich said: 'In Indonesia, it's gone up from 71 percent to 80 percent. In Turkey, from 85 percent to 93 percent. In Nigeria, 25 percent to 32 percent.' In the other 13 countries with no previous survey results, majorities also held strongly unfavorable views of both Israel and Netanyahu. The survey reveals 'majorities across all 24 countries show a lack of confidence that Netanyahu will 'do the right thing,'' Smerkovich said. Many people the US 'have no confidence in Netanyahu,' she added, and there 'has been an increase in the share that say they have no confidence in him … about a 10 percent jump, whereas the share that say they do have confidence in him has stayed fairly stable.' This pattern is repeated in other countries, she said, where 'we have seen an increase in no confidence in Netanyahu. But the share that say they do have confidence in him hasn't really changed much in the US.'
