Wimbledon courts wealthy homebuyers amid decline in London home prices

Wimbledon , the London suburb best known for being home to the tennis tournament of the same name, is resisting the decline of home prices in the UK capital, according to agents.
With celebrities such as tennis legend Boris Becker and X Factor judge and executive producer Simon Cowell among the list of past and present residents, Wimbledon has outperformed the rest of prime southwest London in terms of pricing, according to Savills.
In the second quarter, home prices in Wimbledon's prime district grew 0.6 per cent from the first, while in broader prime southwest
London , they declined 0.2 per cent. And on an annualised basis, Wimbledon home prices recorded a 3.4 per cent increase in the second quarter from a year earlier, while the rest of prime southwest London saw prices rise by 0.5 per cent.
From 2020 to 2025, Wimbledon home prices climbed 15.8 per cent versus 8.1 per cent for the rest of prime southwest London, according to the property consultancy.
'Buyers often perceive Wimbledon to be fantastically positioned between London and the country,' said Corey Askew, the director and head of Savills' Wimbledon office. 'For those living more centrally who had been toying with the idea of moving further out with their family, Wimbledon has been an attractive option in giving them the best of both worlds: green spaces and easy access to central London.'
One of the area's most attractive drawing cards was the All England Lawn Tennis Club and the annual Wimbledon Championships, which is held from late June to early July, said Christopher Burton, the head of Wimbledon sales at Knight Frank.

How a rare whisky's box can bump its value, and the makers getting creative

Over the last 10 years, rare whisky has seen significant price increases and fluctuations, with some bottles fetching millions at auction. But what is in the bottle is not all that matters. These days, packaging plays an important role in determining the value of a rare vintage, according to Jonny Fowle, global head of spirits at Sotheby's auction house. 'Presentation in whisky is a key factor,' he says. Unlike wine, whisky can maintain its condition even when placed on a display shelf in a collector's home, so the allure of a bottle can lie in how it looks. This is one reason why there has been an explosion of creativity in the packaging of rare whiskies in recent years, Fowle says. Jonny Fowle, Sotheby's global head of spirits, holds a bottle of The Macallan 1926, the world's most expensive whisky. Photo: Sotheby's Sotheby's is currently working on a four-year project called The Luminary Series with Scotland's Dalmore distillery and design museum V&A Dundee, in which the packaging of rare whiskies is designed by renowned architects. Three editions of rare whiskies have already been released.

Trump in Scotland for golf and trade talks amid hopes of EU deal

US President Donald Trump, dogged by questions about his ties to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, arrived in Scotland on Friday for some golf and bilateral talks that could yield a trade deal with the European Union. Trump told reporters upon his arrival that he will visit his two golf properties in Scotland and meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whom he called a 'highly respected woman.' As hundreds of onlookers cheered his arrival, Trump repeated his earlier comment about a 50-50 chance of securing a deal with the EU, adding it would be his administration's biggest trade agreement thus far, if it came together. However, he said there were still 'sticking points' with Brussels on 'maybe 20 different things'. Trump said his meeting with Starmer would be more of a celebration of the trade deal already reached than continued work on it, adding: 'It's a great deal for both.' Before he left Washington, Trump said his administration was working hard on a possible trade deal with the EU, and Brussels was keen to make a deal. Von der Leyen said later she would meet Trump in Scotland on Sunday.

World No 1 Jannik Sinner rehires former coach involved in doping incident that led to ban

Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has reappointed his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara with immediate effect, the Italian world No 1 confirmed on Wednesday. Sinner parted ways with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year following the investigation into his positive tests for the banned substance clostebol. 'The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open,' a statement from Sinner's team said. 'Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level.' Sinner served a three-month suspension earlier this year after agreeing a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) in February after authorities accepted that the anabolic agent clostebol had entered his system inadvertently via massages from Naldi at Indian Wells in March 2024. Wada had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against an independent tribunal's decision last August to clear Sinner of wrongdoing.
