Threads of Freedom: The Man Who Spins Gandhi's Dream Into the Present
1 2 Nagpur: Each morning, Arun Deshpande pedals his half-century-old bicycle through Nagpur's lanes, dressed in a freshly pressed khadi kurta and pyjama. To passersby, he might look like a retired teacher heading for a stroll. But his destination — and mission — has remained the same for more than 30 years: Keeping alive the Gandhian art of hand-spinning cotton on the charkha. Since 1992, the man everyone calls "Arunji" has worn only handwoven khadi and has taught hundreds — from students to judges — how to spin yarn. "The charkha is not just a tool," he said. "It is a philosophy. I learn, I teach, and I live Gandhi every day." Born in Hinganghat, Wardha district, into a close-knit, culturally grounded family, Deshpande built a career in Maharashtra's education department, serving as a primary school teacher and later a school inspector. Yet the security of a govt post could not compete with the pull of Gandhian ideals. Inspired by Sane Guruji, Vinoba Bhave, and Mahatma Gandhi, and guided by his mentor Gade Guruji, he left govt service to devote himself to the Sarvodaya Ashram in Nagpur, promoting moral and cultural values. His outreach was extensive. During Sane Guruji's birth centenary year, he visited thousands of schools across Maharashtra, telling moral stories, singing devotional songs, and introducing classics such as Geetai and Shyamchi Aai to new generations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Last year, he taught a former senior high court judge to spin cotton over a period of four months. In another instance, he restored two dilapidated charkhas belonging to Sharad Ranade, taking them to Wardha's Gopuri for repairs before returning them in working order — an act that moved Ranade to gift him a pethi charkha, which Deshpande still treasures. Now enrolled in Gandhi and Thought department at Nagpur University, Deshpande is often the oldest in his class by decades. His classmates are young enough to be his grandchildren, yet he is usually the first to arrive, armed with an energy and discipline that belies his years. Surat's Pak Mohalla gets a new name
1 2 Surat: For garment saleswoman Priya Chauhan, the first task after her short weekend break will be updating the address on her Aadhaar card. This Sunday, at an Aadhaar camp nearby, she plans to replace 'Pakistan Mohalla' with its new name 'Hindustani Mohalla' in her Aadhaar records. "I'm happy that our locality is getting a new identity. I always felt awkward when someone referred to it as Pakistan Mohalla," Chauhan told TOI. Chauhan is not alone in her sentiment. Some 5,000 residents of the neighbourhood in Rander share her enthusiasm, embracing the change as symbolic liberation from a decades-old label, just in time for Independence Day celebrations. Popularly known as Pakistan Mohalla, the locality will now be known as Hindustani Mohalla, with a signboard reflecting the new name being inaugurated by BJP's Surat West MLA Purnesh Modi in the presence of many residents. After Partition, a large number of Sindhis from Pakistan migrated to various parts of India, with some settling in the city. The area gradually became known as Ramnagar, a refugee colony of around 600 homes. Later, a part of it became Pakistan Mohalla. "Sindhis settled in this area after Partition and a part of it became known as Pakistan Mohalla. I took the initiative to rename it Hindustani Mohalla in municipal records a few years ago and it was approved," said Modi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo He invited people from the locality to get their Aadhaar card updated with the new address at a camp on Sunday. Locals said that in the past, attempts were made to update the name of the locality by naming an internal crossroads Hemu Kalani Chowk. However, that renaming was not popular with locals. Another resident, Ratan Chavda, 70, who is eager to go to the Aadhaar camp to update her address, said, "For decades, this locality was called Pakistan Mohalla, and the name stuck. I am happy I will get to update my address in Aadhaar records and see it replaced with Hindustani Mohalla." "This part of Ramnagar was dull in the past and people started calling it Pakistan. The name became popular and even the residents accepted it. It is good that it has now got a new identity," said Vijay Hasani, who runs a garment showroom at the entry point of Hindustani Mohalla.
