How Bryan Mbeumo performed on Man Utd debut vs Everton as clear challenge emerges
The burst down the right hand side, the cut inside onto the left foot, the finish.
It became something of a trademark for Bryan Mbeumo at Brentford, but if the Cameroonian's first outing in a Manchester United shirt is anything to go by then we're going to be seeing that signature move a lot less.
On this evidence, as Mbeumo played in attack with Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha against Everton in Atlanta, he's going to be tasked with making an impact all across the front line and not just down the right, where he was a constant menace and presence across most of his 242 Brentford appearances.
Fluidity is going to be the watchword for this particular United attack, with Mbeumo taking up all three positions in the front line across the first half hour, and as a result Fernandes and Cunha doing the same.
With the width given by wing-backs Amad and Diogo Dalot, Mbeumo and Cunha were often required to focus their attentions on haring towards goal from deep, with Fernandes pulling the strings behind them and moving into ever dangerous positions.
The link-up play between the trio was promising in the opening exchanges, but Fernandes had already scored from the penalty spot - something Mbeumo would often do for Brentford - before the debutant would start to exert his authority on the game.
Notably Mbeumo was on free-kicks for United, and after a poor delivery into the box for his first, he brought a save from Jordan Pickford from one closer to goal. Shortly afterwards Mbeumo was the first to react as Pickford pushed out a Fernandes shot, but Vitaliy Mykolenko blocked impressively.
Ever willing to get involved, Mbeumo found that his close control let him down on a couple of occasions later in the first half, and that is an area that he is going to have to improve in the role that he will be expected to play.
As if to underline the flexibility within his side, Amorim withdrew Mbeumo at half-time and replaced him with Patrick Dorgu, shifting Amad further forward into that ever-changing attack.
That change will have been to protect Mbeumo's legs in his first outing of pre-season, as the new arrival got a glimpse of just what will be expected of him at his new club.
He's going to have to do more than just his Brentford trick, and while he is certainly capable of it, it might just take a little time to get up to speed with his new surroundings.

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko makes choice as contact made for 'unrealistic' deal
Manchester United look to have secured the signing of Benjamin Sesko, fending off Newcastle's interest, with the RB Leipzig striker closing on a move to Old Trafford Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Benjamin Sesko despite Newcastle also wanting to land the RB Leipzig frontman. Both teams are in the market for a striker, but the Red Devils look to have won the race. The Slovenian is poised to sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford and compliment the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo with his possible signing taking the Manchester outfit's spending to around the £200million mark. Ruben Amorim knew he needed to get serious quality through the door if he was to improve on last year's horror showing, which ended with United finishing 15th. The club still need to try and get a number of players off their books or risk carrying them for several months. Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are all looking for ways out of Manchester and their exits could help fund some of the club's future business. Here's the latest news involving the Premier League outfit. Sesko training solo after picking Red Devils Leipzig have confirmed Sesko is training away from his team-mates as speculation over his move to Manchester ramps up. The striker reportedly told his team-mates earlier this summer that he would be on the move to pastures new. The German club confirmed on Wednesday morning that the 22-year-old was again working individually. In a brief statement they said: "Wednesday squad update: Andrija Maksimovic is back in Leipzig, but is training individually today. Benjamin Sesko and Lukas Klostermann are also working individually." Sesko is also very much on Newcastle's radar and the Magpies were the club to make the first bid. However the striker has expressed a desire to head to Old Trafford, shunning Champions League football in the process, as Amorim closes on the No 9 he's been after. Baleba contact made Those in Manchester have made contact with Brighton as they look to land explore a deal for midfielder Carlos Baleba. The Cameroon star enjoyed a stellar year last season and the Seagulls have no plans to cash in. The Red Devils are aware the move may be unrealistic, especially if their transfer funds to end up being spent on Sesko, but are looking to gauge whether anything can be done in the coming weeks as Ruben Amorim seeks to further bolster his squad, reports the Athletic. United's current focus is on landing the Slovenian from RB Leipzig after they jumped ahead of Newcastle in the transfer race. There is an acceptance that any move, which could cost more than £70million, will make any swoop for the Brighton star very difficult. Barca confident on Rashford registration Barcelona president Joan Laporta is confident the club will be able to register Marcus Rashford and their other signings before the new season starts. The forward has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan. The deal includes a £26m option to buy and involves Barcelona paying his wages in full. There were concerns that Barcelona may not be able to register Rashford due to their financial struggles - but they have been addressed. "It's progressing well," Laporta told ESPN. "We're doing our job and we're confident that we'll be able to register everyone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Wayne Rooney's son Kai bumped up three age levels as he is named in Man United squad for international tournament featuring PSG
Wayne Rooney 's son Kai has taken a major step in his budding football career after earning a shock call-up to Manchester United 's Under-19 squad for the prestigious Mladen Ramljak Tournament in Croatia – despite being just 15 years old. The teenager, who can play either as a No 9 or out wide, has been promoted three age groups following his standout performances at the Super Cup NI in Northern Ireland last week. Kai scored and assisted as United's Under-16s reached the final, losing narrowly to Southampton. Now, barely into his summer holidays, Kai is lining up against players up to four years older than him at one of Europe's top youth tournaments. The Mladen Ramljak Memorial, hosted in Zagreb by Croatian giants Dinamo, has become a magnet for scouts and elite academy sides – with previous editions featuring the likes of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Eduardo Camavinga. United have been drawn into Group A alongside Rapid Bucuresti, Juventus and Dinamo Zagreb – the defending champions. Kai and his young teammates kick off their campaign on Thursday against Rapid. The tournament concludes on Sunday with placement matches and a final between the group winners. Group B comprises Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk – all of whom are represented by their top youth squads. The Red Devils' decision to fast-track Kai into the squad is being seen as a vote of confidence in his long-term potential. United are also understood to have included a handful of other younger players from their U15 and U16 ranks. That includes 14-year-old striker JJ Gabriel, the Nike-signed prodigy dubbed 'Kid Messi ', who scored twice on his Under-18 debut against Leeds earlier this year. Kai's call-up comes off the back of a strong showing in the Super Cup NI. The tournament – formerly known as the Milk Cup – holds special significance for the Rooneys, with Wayne having played in it himself for Everton back in 2000. Wayne and wife Coleen were ever-present throughout the tournament, cheering from the stands alongside their younger sons Kit and Cass. They also took time out to enjoy the local attractions – including a visit to Curry's Fun Park in Portrush, where Wayne and his sons were spotted on the bumper cars. The couple posed for photos with staff and mingled with onlookers, drawing praise for their down-to-earth demeanour. After the final, Wayne posted a proud message on social media: 'Great few days in Coleraine for the SuperCupNI. Well done to Kai and the Manchester United lads on a brilliant effort throughout the tournament. Congratulations to Southampton on the win. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.' When asked about offering advice to his eldest son, Wayne said he prefers a hands-off approach. 'He just plays, that's what he's always done. It's unfair to expect too much — he's only 15. But he handles the pressure of his surname very well.' Kai joined United's academy in 2020 at the age of 11 and has steadily worked his way through the youth ranks. His playing style draws natural comparisons to his father, while staff at United have praised his composure, movement off the ball, and eye for goal.

Coleen Rooney picks up a bottle of vodka as she calls into her village shop after trip to Ireland with husband Wayne and son Kai
Coleen Roone y nipped to her local shop on Wednesday, shortly after returning from a trip to Ireland with son Wayne and eldest son Kai. The mother-of-four, 39, was spotted leaving a village store in leafy Cheshire - where the family own a sprawling new-build mansion - after picking up a bottle of Smirnoff vodka. The brand's distinctive logo was visible through the plastic bag she carried while making her way back to her car. Coleen looked relaxed in a plain white T-shirt and dark blue skinny jeans as she exited the shop with a white carrier bag in hand. Keeping things casual, she slipped on a pair of nude flip-flops and accessorised simply with a wristwatch. Her outing comes after she and her husband Wayne Rooney, 39, were every inch the supportive parents as they watched their son Kai play for Manchester United in the 2025 Super Cup NI. The Rooney's travelled to Coleraine, Northern Ireland, to stand pitchside and watch Kai, 15, play in the youth football tournament, which kicked off last week. Speaking to Super Cup NI, Wayne shared: 'He just plays, that's what he's done this whole time playing, I think it's very unfair for anyone to expect him to go and do all kinds, he's just playing as a young boy, he's 15, just playing and doing it. 'But of course he gets different attention to his teammates, but he handles that really well.' Wayne played in the Super Cup - formerly the Milk Cup - himself in 2000 for Everton's Under-14 side and described the time as some of his 'greatest memories'. The Super Cup is renowned for showcasing young and upcoming footballing talents.
