‘His brother is not coming back': Heartbroken mother speaks after toddler dies in Pretoria tent fire

The Citizen15-07-2025
The mother of a toddler who died in a Pretoria tent fire is staying strong for her grieving children as the family prepares for a memorial.
The mother of two-year-old Alejandro McGarry, who died last Tuesday in a tent fire, is staying strong for her other children who are only coming to terms with the tragedy.
Susan Radue said there were so many untrue stories making the rounds after little Ali, as his family affectionately called him, died after a candle burned down the tent they were sleeping in on a smallholding at Grootvlei Oos in Pretoria.
'He didn't die in his camping cot and also not a gas explosion,' she said.
A heartbroken family
'We are coping as a family. We will hold a memorial on Friday to greet our Ali, we cannot bury him, because we need to have postmortem DNA tests done because his body was unrecognisable.'
Radue said her other children were heartbroken and she needed to keep them strong.
'The middle child, my 16-year-old, is a very strong child, but it's like it only hit him today that his younger brother is not coming back. He went back to the scene and sat there for a while,' she said.

Radue said besides having to find finances for the DNA tests, they also struggled with transport after their Toyota RAV4 keys were destroyed in the fire.
'A house fire is fast, hot, dark and deadly'
AfriForum disaster management specialist Tarien Cooks said the dangers of house fires were becoming more common in the cold winter months.
'In the past few months, several lives have been lost in house fires. A house fire is fast, hot, dark and deadly,' she said.
'Smoke spreads faster than you think and most deaths in house fires are not from the flames, but from smoke inhalation.'
Another fire claims two-year-old's life
The second fire last week in Tshwane claimed a two-year-old and a family of five.
City of Tshwane emergency services department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said: 'On arrival, the firefighters found out that the fire had destroyed the four-roomed shack dwelling.
'Sadly, five family members, including a senior citizen, one adult and three minors, were fatally burned.'

Rob Hersov's inflammatory remarks reignite race relations debate in South Africa

Businessman Rob Hersov Image: Supplied South African businessman Rob Hersov ignited controversy when he fired a series of inflammatory remarks about the country's black population and the historical figure Zulu king Shaka during a recent episode of the American podcast "Thought Leaders." His comments drew widespread condemnation but have also reignited discussions about the delicate fabric of race relations in South Africa. Speaking on a platform associated with the conservative Epoch Times, Hersov referred to black South Africans as "barbaric." He also labelled Shaka a "rapist" known for throwing people off cliffs. Such statements were seen as promulgating deeply entrenched stereotypes and alarmist narratives regarding violence in South Africa. Hersov did not shy away from insisting that the country was plagued by two farm attacks each day and two murders of farmers each week. He asserted that farmers were three times more likely to be murdered than police officers, a statement that lacked reliable data or credible sources to back it up. His utterances aligned with the rhetoric associated with organisations like AfriForum, which faced accusations of misrepresenting the realities of farm violence, even though official statistics for the 2022/23 period told a different story. This was in contrast to AfriForum's figure of 49 alleged farm murders. Furthermore, a recent assessment by suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu revealed that, out of 12 farm murders in the last quarter of 2024, only one victim was white. Similar sentiments have been echoed by US President Donald Trump, who recently alleged that a "white genocide" was happening in South Africa. He proposed measures such as cutting US aid to the country and granting expedited citizenship to Afrikaners. Those assertions were rejected by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who, during a meeting with Trump, stated that the narrative of a white genocide does not reflect the realities of the nation. Ramaphosa underscored the South African government's dedication to democratic principles and freedom of expression while also stressing that extreme views do not represent state policy. "What you saw in the speeches made is not government policy. We have a multiparty democracy in South Africa that allows people to express themselves," he stated previously. Political analyst Siphamandla Zondi denounced Hersov's claims as mere election-style rhetoric lacking substantive evidence. He noted that the narrative of "white genocide" serves to amplify fears and alarm without addressing the broader context of violence that affects all demographic groups.

Why did Principal Jaco Pieterse leave Bergview College after being cleared of rape allegation?

Bergview College has officially parted ways with Jaco Pieterse, who had been a principal at the Eastern Cape institution. He was implicated in connection with an alleged rape of a seven-year-old Cwecwe but was later cleared of any involvement. The decision follows months of turmoil sparked by what AfriForum has described as a disinformation campaign that led to death threats and supposedly forced Pieterse to flee his home in March. "The Board of Bergview College and Mr Pieterse have agreed that the employment relationship between Pieterse and Bergview College be terminated by mutual consent. We kindly ask for your continued support and cooperation during this transition period as we work together to maintain the stability and success of the school," the board said. AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit, which has been representing Pieterse's interests, has welcomed the outcome while vowing to pursue justice against those responsible for what it calls a coordinated smear campaign. "AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit can confirm Pieterse's amicable departure from the school. Our current priority is to ensure the prosecution of those who falsely accused him of being a suspect in an alleged rape," said spokesperson Barry Bateman.

Big talk from a faceless coward hiding behind a screen. 'You want a face-to-face? Cool. Drop your name and info. Let the world see who's running their mouth. Until then, sit down. You're just another spineless troll trying to bait outrage because your life's irrelevant.'
