Why Detroit Tigers veteran Alex Cobb hasn't quit baseball despite pain in both hips

Yahoo31-07-2025
Alex Cobb has pain in both hips.
He still hasn't pitched for the Detroit Tigers.
And he doesn't want to share how many injections he has received in the past six months.
"It's been a lot," Cobb said.
FREE AGENCY: Alex Cobb thought about retirement. Now Tigers are paying him $15 million
Cobb — the 37-year-old right-hander whom the Tigers signed to a one-year, $15 million contract in free agency — has been injured since early February, roughly one week before pitchers and catchers reported to spring training.
He has thrown countless bullpen sessions in the past six months, along with four starts in two separate rehab assignments. His goal is to pitch for the Tigers in 2025, whether it's in the regular season or the postseason.
The 13-year MLB veteran refuses to give up.
But why?
As he explained: "It's been obviously really challenging. I signed a really nice contract with a team that obviously had really high expectations for me going into the season. First and foremost, you have a responsibility to try to fulfill that as much as possible. As the diagnosis has come in, and the pain sets in, and you realize the challenges that are in front of you, I think realizing where you are at in your career, and the possibility of things things being over, to think about never stepping on a big-league mound again, it hits you pretty hard and gives you a motivation to want to be able to have that feeling again, jus competing against the best. Once you're done, you're done — your childhood dream is over. I don't want to have that feeling. I think the most important one is I've never been on a team with this type of potential. We have a real chance to do something really special. If I was ever on a team, and we were the last team standing, and we had a nice little trophy and a ring, I'd want to stare at that ring and feel like I did everything I could to contribute, even if it's just a little bit. I'd feel a lot more pride in that if I could stare at that ring, and even if it wasn't the expectations that I had for my season, knowing that I contributed in some sort of way."
BOYS ARE BACK: Tigers are winning again. Is Riley Greene's mustache the magic?
In his first rehab assignment, Cobb made two starts for High-A West Michigan and one start for Triple-A Toledo — from May 30-June 11 — before the Tigers stopped his rehab assignment due to soreness in both hips.
He began his second rehab assignment Tuesday, July 29, with High-A West Michigan, allowing one run on one hit and zero walks with four strikeouts in two innings. All four of his strikeouts came on swings.
He threw 31 pitches.
"Where I'm at, I'm going to have pain," said Cobb, who will start again Sunday, Aug. 3, for the Whitecaps. "It's just going to be dealing with it and seeing if we can do it effectively. I'm not going to be pain free, and I'm going to have to battle through pain."

In the future, Cobb plans to undergo a procedure to fix his hips.
He expects to live a normal life after baseball.
In the meantime, Cobb has received numerous injections to block out as much pain as possible from his hips. He has relied on biologic injections, which uses ingredients like blood, tissues and cells from his own body.
"I'm making sure that they're not going to affect my long-term health," Cobb said. "It's not like I'm just shoving drugs into my system. I know it looks a little questionable on paper, but those injections have given me hope."
NEW PITCHER: Tigers grade for Chris Paddack trade: Nobody better to replace Reese Olson?
Looking ahead, Cobb has redefined the expectations for what he aims to accomplish in the 2025 season.
He just wants to try his best to pitch again.
"I don't think I can define success by anything other than me giving every last bit I have to the organization," Cobb said. "Most other seasons, it would have been easier to probably throw in the towel at certain times, but it's just this season in front of me. What dictates the success at the end of the year is me knowing I did everything I could. I'll be able to lay down peacefully at night if I know that I gave everything I had."

Who got it right with Clemson football's preseason ranking: Coaches Poll or AP poll?

NEW: AP Poll Voters' Most Overrated Preseason College Football Teams since 2014 via @Brett_McMurphy😬 Monday's reveal of the preseason AP Top 25 poll produced a few different results from the previous week's US LBM Coaches Poll. While the team at the top remained the same in both polls with the Texas Longhorns at No. 1, there was a different team at No. 2 with Penn State replacing Ohio State for the runner-up spot in the AP poll. The Clemson Tigers got a better ranking from the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the AP's poll. Dabo Swinney's team was ranked No. 4 by the media, up two spots from where the 60-plus coaches in the US LBM poll had them. Which poll got it right? USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Blake Toppmeyer pondered that question with regard to eight top 25 teams and their discrepancies from one preseason poll to the other. For Clemson, Toppmeyer believes that AP voters got it right by slotting the Tigers at No. 4. "Clemson finished with four losses last season, but never mind that fading object in the rearview mirror, because Dabo Swinney retained a talented roster that's now more experienced. He even added some polish with a few transfers. Clemson touts the nation's best defensive line, along with arguably the nation's top quarterback, Cade Klubnik. The Tigers aren't just contenders inside the ACC. They're national championship contenders." --USA TODAY Sports' Blake Toppmeyer on Clemson. Earlier this week, CBS Sports argued that even the Tigers' No. 4 ranking was low. There is, of course, a word of caution about getting too carried away by preseason rankings, regardless of your poll of choice. The 2024 Florida State Seminoles were the toast of the ACC entering last season after going 13-0 to win the league in 2023, only to flop right out of the gate after a preseason top 10 ranking to finish 2-10. It's not just Mike Norvell's 2024 'Noles, either. USC, Oklahoma, Auburn and Texas A&M are just a few of the more frequent disappointments from the past 10 years of preseason poll rankings, as On3's Brett McMurphy recently posited. Twice in the past four years, Clemson's own preseason rankings have yielded some fairly disappointing results by season's end. The Tigers were ranked No. 9 entering the 2023 season but stumbled in a rare four-loss season to No. 20 in the final Coaches Poll. After checking in at No. 2 entering 2021, Clemson landed at No. 16 in the final poll. Conversely, it was 10 years ago this season when the Tigers ranked outside the preseason top 10, only to finish as runner-up to Alabama after falling just one or two plays short against Nick Saban's 2015 Crimson Tide in the national championship game in Glendale, Arizona. When it comes to preseason polls, things are seldom an exact science. How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in its 2026 class?

LSU football is aiming to sign the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in 2026. LSU already has two consensus five-star commits, but LSU will need a couple more to win the recruiting title. In 2025, LSU signed two recruits ranked as five-stars in the Rivals Industry Rankings. But LSU left talent on the table. Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood and five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore were both LSU commits at one point before flipping to Michigan and Oregon, respectively. LSU is looking for a stronger finish to the recruiting cycle in 2026. So, just how many five-stars will LSU sign in 2026? Let's start with the two five-stars already committed. Wide receiver Tristen Keys and defensive tackle Lamar Brown currently headline the LSU class. Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, Keys is the No. 7-ranked player in the class and No. 1 at his position. Brown sits No. 2 overall in the Industry Rankings, but ESPN slots the Louisiana product as the No. 1 player in the country. For LSU to gain another five-star, the Tigers don't have to add a new commitment. There's a good chance that at least one of LSU's current commits gets a bump. Defenders Richard Anderson and Trenton Henderson are the obvious candidates. Henderson ranks No. 36 in the Rivals Industry Rankings and already has a fifth-star from 247Sports. With a big senior year, Henderson could enter the consensus five-star status. The same could be said for Anderson, who has flirted with five-star status throughout his recruitment. Expect at least one of those players to earn star No. 5 by signing day. Then we have the players LSU still wants to add. The top uncommitted recruit left on LSU's board is five-star offensive lineman Darius Gray. The Tigers have gone back and forth with South Carolina for Gray's services, but South Carolina is trending. LSU is right there, though. Gray is the No. 1-ranked interior offensive lineman in the Rivals Industry Rankings. At quarterback, LSU is still pushing for Texas commit Dia Bell. Bell is the No. 1-ranked QB in the country and would be a massive addition to LSU's class, but the Tigers' chances of a flip are slim. Still, don't count LSU out. Verdict: How many five-star recruits will LSU football sign in 2026? I think LSU holds on to Keys and Brown, and both players retain five-star status throughout the recruitment process. The most likely scenario is LSU finishing with three five-stars. Whether it's a commitment from Gray or Henderson getting a rankings bump.

No. 4 Clemson's experience makes the Tigers the ACC favorite. Can anyone challenge them?

No. 4 Clemson won so much over more than a decade that it felt like a step back when the Tigers didn't reach 10 wins two years ago in the first of back-to-back four-loss seasons. Still, the Tigers are the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions and coming off a trip to the College Football Playoff. Experience from that run is part of why the Tigers are the runaway preseason pick to finish atop the ACC again. 'Experience, as they say, doesn't come at a discount,' coach Dabo Swinney said. Clemson won at least 10 games from 2011-2022, including two national championships and eight ACC titles, before a nine-win year in 2023. The Tigers (10-4) beat SMU for last year's title. 'I think our mentality is, man, we're keeping our head down, just kind of keeping it low,' said quarterback Cade Klubnik, the preseason ACC player of the year. Clemson returns four Associated Press All-ACC picks from last year, including first-team offensive lineman Blake Miller and two defensive linemen (Peter Woods and T.J. Parker) ranked in the top three among returners at their position nationally by Pro Football Focus. Overall, Clemson held 11 of 27 spots on the preseason all-ACC team. No other team held more than three. If not Clemson, then who? The ACC has two other teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 with No. 10 Miami and No. 16 SMU. The Hurricanes were the league's highest-ranked team much of last year, though they missed the ACC title game after losing at Syracuse. They brought in Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck as the successor to No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Cam Ward. The Mustangs have back-to-back 11-win seasons under Rhett Lashlee, who led SMU to an 8-0 record in its first league season. SMU returns quarterback Kevin Jennings (28 total touchdowns last year), and AP all-ACC picks in offensive lineman Logan Parr, safety Isaiah Nwokobia and kicker Collin Rogers. Seminoles' response Florida State entered last season as the reigning ACC champion and preseason favorite, then went 2-10. Coach Mike Norvell's offseason included hiring two coordinators, notably former Auburn and UCF head coach Gus Malzahn for the offense. 'When you come to Florida State, you'd better embrace the highest of expectations, because it's what I have, it's what our program has,' Norvell said. New faces Three new coaches arrive in North Carolina's Bill Belichick, Wake Forest's Jake Dickert and Stanford's Frank Reich. Belichick led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles but this is his first college season, while the school is betting on the 73-year-old to elevate its football profile after moving on from Mack Brown. Dickert left Washington State for Wake Forest after Dave Clawson unexpectedly stepped down after the season. Reich, who joins Belichick and Boston College's Bill O'Brien as the ACC's national-high three former NFL head coaches, is an interim coach after the spring firing of Troy Taylor due to off-field concerns. Irish factor Sixth-ranked Notre Dame has six games against ACC teams as part of its annual scheduling partnership with the league, with the football independent being a member of all other ACC sports. Those don't count in the league standings but certainly have CFP implications for last year's national runner-up. The biggest comes with an opening-game trip to Miami (Aug. 31), along with trips to Boston College (Nov. 1), Pittsburgh (Nov. 15) and Stanford (Nov. 29). The Irish's home games come against N.C. State (Oct. 11) and Syracuse (Nov. 22). Heading west Boston College, Duke, FSU, UNC, Pittsburgh and Virginia are this year's teams to touch all four U.S. continental time zones for a league road trip in Year 2 of westward expansion. California hosts the Blue Devils (Oct. 4), Tar Heels (Oct. 17) and Cavaliers (Nov. 1). Stanford hosts the Eagles (Sept. 13), Seminoles (Oct. 18) and Panthers (Nov. 1). That would leave Clemson and Georgia Tech as the only ACC teams yet to travel to California. Both go next year, the Tigers to Cal and the Yellow Jackets to Stanford. Marquee matchups The league gets immediate measuring-stick matchups. Week 1 features LSU visiting Clemson, Alabama visiting Florida State, TCU visiting UNC and Georgia Tech visiting Colorado. There are also Atlanta games with Syracuse meeting Tennessee and Virginia Tech facing South Carolina. Key conference games include Clemson visiting Georgia Tech (Sept. 13), hosting SMU (Oct. 18) and traveling to Louisville (Nov. 14). Miami hosts Louisville (Oct. 17) and visits SMU (Nov. 1), while SMU hosts Louisville (Nov. 22). The ACC title game is Dec. 6 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
