In a conversation with ANI, he said, "It has already been mentioned. Yes, I recommended him.. Mai to kehta nahi Maine unko (Amitabh Bachchan) role dilaya..ye mujhe milne aate the Amitabh sahab (He used to come to meet me. Mr. Amitabh.) He used to sit next to me. To Maine Ramesh Sippy ji ko kaha yeh naya ladka hai usko awaaz se to lagta hai bahut acha kaam karega...unki jo andar se chahna this..jo khud se pyar karne ki khoobsurati thi vo achi lagi..maine kaha inko lelo (So I told him to take him)."
Reportedly, the role was initially given to Shatrughan Sinha, but later Dharmendra recommended Amitabh Bachchan's name.
'Sholay' revolves around the village of Ramgarh, where retired police chief Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) plots to bring down the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) and enlists the help of two lesser criminals, Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). When Gabbar attacks the village, Jai and Veeru wonder why Thakur does nothing to help them. They soon learn that he has no arms and that Gabbar was the one who cut them off. Enraged by this, they redouble their efforts to help Thakur.

However, after being part of so many successful projects, he shared, "I have yet to give the best."
On talking about his upcoming project, he shared, " Now my film is coming 'Ikkis'. Sriram Raghavan director hai. Very good director. And... Very good subject. I won't talk about it now..vo 2 October ko release ho rahi hai"
Dharmendra is set to reunite with actor Arbaaz Khan after 27 years with the film 'Maine Pyaar Kiya Phir Se'.The film is set to begin its shooting schedule soon and is expected to hit theatres in November 2025, as noted in a press note shared by the makers of 'Maine Pyar Kiya Phir Se'. (ANI)

Mithun Chakraborty Claims TMC "Planned" The Bengal Files Trailer Halt: "In Bengal, FIRs Are Distributed Like Kurmura"
Mumbai (Maharashtra): Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri's directorial The Bengal Files, which focuses on the events of the Direct Action Day and the 1946 Calcutta killings, has landed in controversy even before its release. Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty discussed the controversy surrounding the trailer launch of The Bengal Files in Kolkata, expressing surprise at the entire ruckus without even watching the film. He also blamed the ruling party in the state, saying everything was "planned". Speaking to ANI, he said, "Everything was planned, but it was so surprising to me, without even seeing the trailer, without even seeing anything, they are opposing it for what? To face the truth? So, that is the problem. Nothing else." On August 18, during a press conference in Delhi, the filmmaker revealed that "FIRs have been filed by ruling party members" on the makers. Speaking about it, the Disco Dancer actor added, "In Bengal, FIRs are distributed like kurmura (puffed rice). Agar TMC ka koi chota-mota bhi hoga na, police station mein jayega FIR karo bolega, (police) kar dega. So, it was like that. So, never mind. If the FIR has been done, he (Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri) will fight it back. No problem". The film explores the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s, including events like the 1946 Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots of 1946. Chakraborty lashed out at the critics, saying, "Everybody is scared of the truth. That is the thing," adding that the young generation should know about the truth. "It's 1947, even before my birth, which we don't know about. The next generation should know about it what happened during Noakhali or (know) about the great Calcutta killings... What happened... We read a line... What happened? You don't want to know the truth?" he said. The Bengal Files also features Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi. It is focused on the events of the Direct Action Day, aiming to unveil the "most brutal chapter" of Indian history. A ruckus erupted during the release of The Bengal Files trailer in Kolkata on August 16. Agnihotri said during the press meet, "I am discovering the political scenario. I had thought how anybody could stop the trailer, but when we went to Kolkata, the multiplex refused to show the trailer after all the permissions in writing. "Then, the hotel chain stopped showing the trailer. The police the wrire then I was told that the ruling party filed many FIRs as we stand here today, the FIRs are filed on us by the ruling party members and I have been told that ruling party has major objection on portrayal untold story of Hindu genocide. They have a problem with that film about demographic change." The Bengal Files is slated to hit theatres on September 5, 2025.

The iconic 'Sholay' starring Dharmendra , Amitabh Bachchan , Jaya Bachchan , Hema Malini , Sanjeev Kumar , Amjad Khan among others is considered the greatest ever Indian movie. The film recently completed 50 years on August 15 and is still remembered over the years. While it may be enjoyed and loved, become a part of popular culture and even meme material for the Gen Z today. While the movie may be a cult, it even was a blockbuster at the box office and here's why the film continues to remain so over the years, despite the fact that today we have movies which makes Rs 500 crore and more at the box office. While the numbers today are sometimes, manufactured and the ticket prices are also so high, the success of 'Sholay' was unshakable and way ahead of its time. When the film released, people actually thought it will be a huge flop, also because Bachchan dies in the end and the makers also considered changing the climax. But it picked up and how. According to Box office India, the real turning point came a week later, on 21st August 1975, when Sholay opened in East Punjab. The response there was electric, confirming that Delhi/UP, Bihar, and Central India would follow the same trend. By October 3, when it opened in those regions, the film's blockbuster status was sealed. What followed was unprecedented. Sholay ran for 50 consecutive weeks (Golden Jubilee) in 28 cinemas across the country. To put that into perspective—back then, even a 25-week run (Silver Jubilee) in 10 cinemas was enough to declare a film a blockbuster. Not only did Sholay dominate in its first year, but it also continued pulling audiences for nearly two decades in repeat runs, until satellite television and multiplexes gradually changed viewing habits. Over time, the film's lifetime theatrical business grew to nearly three times its original year-one earnings. The film was directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by the legendary duo of Salim-Javed ( Salim Khan , Javed Akhtar). In an old interview with Rajeev Masand, Salim Khan had said, "That time the maximum business was done by 'Haathi Mere Saathi', which was Rs 90 lakhs per territory. So, we just went ahead and added about Rs 10 lakhs and said, Sholay will do more than Rs 1 crore in each territory. People started laughing, making fun of us and they thought Rs 1 crore yeh all India ka total business hoga. But we went wrong and terribly wrong as the film actually made more than that. It made Rs 2-3 crore per territory." 'Sholay' was made under a budget of Rs 3 crore and went on to earn Rs 15 crore that time in that year. As per today's inflated prices, 50 years later, the collection would be considered much higher. Fifty years on, the title of 'India's biggest blockbuster' still belongs to it, and very likely, always will.
