Chief among two more arrested in KZN DA councillor murder case
The Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has arrested two more suspects, including a chief, in connection with the murder of DA Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu.
Ndlovu was shot and killed in December 2023 at his home near Mpophomeni, in Howick.
The 56-year-old chief was arrested along with a 26-year-old suspect who allegedly coordinated the councillor's murder from inside Pietermaritzburg Correctional Centre.
Suspects to appear in court
The pair faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the suspects are expected to appear before the Howick Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 31 July.
They join Thobani Masobho Hlongwa, 31, Khayelihle Shabalala, 31, and a traditional leader under the Nxamalala Tribal Authority, Zwelithini Buthelezi, 43.
Ndlovu's murder
At the time of his death, Ndlovu was attached to the Umgeni Local Municipality at the time of his murder. He was shot more than 10 times in front of his wife and children outside their KwaZulu-Natal home.

DA KZN provincial leader Francois Rodgers described Ndlovu as a humble servant who always put the needs of those he served above his own.
'He will be sorely missed,' Rodgers said.
Following the chief whip's, the DA offered a R1 million reward for information that would lead to the conviction of the individuals who murdered him.
'We had lost hope'
Speaking to the SABC in May, Ndlovu's younger brother Sthembiso said the arrest of Buthelezi – after handing himself over – brought some hope to the family.
'We had lost hope that the case will progress, but now the way things are going, we believe that everything will go accordingly. We are happy that he handed himself over to the police, even though we don't know his plan for that,' Sthembiso said.
'The death of our brother is still difficult to talk about. He left his wife and two children — one was just five months old. It's an uphill for his wife, who is now a single parent.'

Sharpeville cops busted in ransom scandal
VEREENIGING – Following allegations involving the unlawful detention and extortion of a foreign national, two Sharpeville SAPS members, Constable Gift Mncedi Nteso (33) and Reservist/Constable Seipati Mofokeng (39), appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court. Both suspects face charges of kidnapping, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. The Vereeniging Magistrate's Court granted the duo R1 000 bail each. The accused are expected to appear in court again on September 1.

Image: File THE suspected extortion kingpin killed during a recent shoot out with the police had apparently demanded to be paid R1000 'protection fee' by each teacher of an Eastern Cape school. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana said an investigation was launched following extortion allegations against teachers from a local school in Ngqeleni. A threatening letter was reportedly sent to the school where gang members demanded R1 000 in protection fees from each teacher, with warning of repercussions if payments were not made. 'An investigation was launched following a demand of protection fee from teachers in one of Ngqeleni high schools by self-proclaimed extortion gang member/s. The case is investigated by the Eastern Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit. A 30-year-old male suspect was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire with police in the Canzibe Administrative Area, Ngqeleni.' She said officers attached to Tactical Response Team (TRT) were acting on intelligence regarding a suspect linked to a local extortion ring, and came under fire when they attempted to stop a vehicle driven by the suspect. Estranged husband who received R1. 5 million from RAF fights late wife's children for a share on her R1. 1 million pension fund
A man who received R1.5 million from the Road Accident Fund was fighting to receive a portion from late wife's R1.1 million pension fund. Despite receiving R1.5 million from the Road Accident Fund (RAF), a man was disgruntled after the Pension Fund Adjudicator (PFA) excluded him from his late wife's over R1.1 million pension fund. Alexanda Moshimane Molokwane was married to Cynthia Thandi Ndlovu who died in August 2019, leaving behind a substantial death benefit exceeding R1.1 million. Upon her passing, Discovery retirement annuity funds allocated the death benefit equally between Molokwane and Ndovu's two children. However, this arrangement was soon challenged by the children, leading to a reallocation of the funds and leaving Molokwane empty-handed. Aggrieved by this decision, Molokwane laid a complaint with the Pension Funds Adjudicator (PFA) and submitted that he was Ndlovu's surviving spouse. Though the couple had been estranged, he asserted that Ndlovu had financially supported him up until her death, claiming he relied on her for all his living expenses. However, the Pension Funds Adjudicator (PFA) took a different view, presenting a range of factors that influenced their ruling. Notably, they acknowledged that Molokwane had recently received R1.5 million from RAF, which called into question his claims of financial dependence on Ndlovu.
