Tamil Nadu way ahead of the rest of the country in Gross Enrolment Ratio: AICTE Chairman
With more than half the students in Tamil Nadu who pass the higher secondary exam enrolling themselves into colleges, the State has already achieved what the whole country aims to do by the year 2035, Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) said here today.
Addressing students on the graduation day of St. Joseph's College of Engineering and St. Joseph's College of Technology in Chennai, Prof. Sitharam said Tamil Nadu has a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of more than 50 per cent in higher education, while in the rest of the country it was only 29 per cent. He said the State has done remarkably well in engineering education, while underscoring the role played by the private institutions towards improving the GER.
Prof. Sitharam said while degrees are important, upskilling is a priority in the world of technological disruptions. Whether it is Artificial Intelligence, generative AI, cyber security, robotics, or blockchain, these disruptions are changing the way people thought or worked. 'In this world of disruptions, you have to be constantly self-aware and keep up with these technologies,' he asserted, adding that besides picking up domain skills, students should also be prepared to pick up soft skills or any form of art or music to protect themselves from technological disruptions.
Later, talking to reporters, Prof. Sitharam said that the NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the AICTE and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has launched an initiative titled DX-EDGE (Digital Excellence for Growth and Enterprise) to digitally and technologically empower Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). This could mean that out of the eight crore MSMEs in the country, a large number of them could benefit from the use of AI that could have a 20 to 30 per cent increase in revenue.
When asked if the AICTE considered drawing up an ethical framework for the use of AI, Prof. Sitharam said putting up guardrails could limit innovation. Instead, higher learning institutions should inculcate a culture of ethics among students on how to use AI, when to use it and full disclosure on usage.
A total of 2,374 students of batches of 2023 and 2024 graduated from the St. Joseph's College of Engineering while 1,046 students of batches of 2023 and 2024 graduated from St. Joseph's College of Technology.

We'll integrate artificial intelligence in all branches: AICTE Chairperson
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairperson TG Sitharam on Friday said artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated into all branches of technical education. While AICTE had introduced a BTech programme in AI and Data Science as early as 2017, the Council is now working to include AI in the model curriculums of all technical disciplines, including engineering, information technology, and management studies, Sitharam told PTI. "A committee of experts has been constituted to suggest necessary revisions in the model curriculums. This committee has already held three meetings. I expect the panel to submit its recommendations within the next month on how AI can be incorporated across all branches. Two months after that, we aim to finalise the updated model curriculums," he said. Based on these new model curriculums, AI-inclusive teaching could begin as early as next academic year, the official said. He also informed that AICTE has made around 1,000 textbooks available online in 12 Indian languages, which have been downloaded seven lakh times over the past two years. Currently, 54 technical institutions across the country are offering various courses in these 12 Indian languages, he said. Sitharam was in Indore to attend a meeting of Parliament's advisory committee, chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The meeting focused on promoting education in Indian languages in schools and higher education institutions.

Invite tenders for Polavaram–Banakacherla project by June-end, CM tells Water Resources Dept.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu instructed the officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD) to undertake the Polavaram–Banakacherla and other irrigation projects under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and finalise the tenders by the end of this month while securing forest and environmental clearances in a time-bound manner. Addressing a review meeting at the Secretariat near here on Friday, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the officials should take steps for land acquisition for the Polavaram–Banakacherla project and that it would be undertaken by the Jal Harathi Corporation. Proposals for funding were sent to the Central government. Out of the total project cost of ₹81,900 crore, a sum of ₹40,950 crore would be sought as an EAP (External Aided Project) loan, and ₹16,380 crore as grants from the Central government. The State would mobilise ₹16,380 crore under HAM and contribute ₹8,190 crore as equity. POLAVARAM The Chief Minister wanted the diaphragm wall of the Polavaram project to be completed by the end of December 2025 and noted that the overall civil works were completed to the extent of 81.70%, of which a measly progress of 3.84% was achieved under the YSR Congress Party rule. Farming Further, Mr. Naidu told the officials to take immediate steps to commence agricultural activities in the Krishna and Godavari deltas and called for focus on increasing the groundwater levels, filling reservoirs, and efficient utilisation of water resources. He expressed dissatisfaction over the non-functioning of physio meters and AWS (Automatic Weather Station) sensors in some parts of the State and ordered that a sum of ₹30 crore be sanctioned immediately for purchasing new equipment. Water audit He stressed the need for scientific water auditing, and told the officials to issue district-level bulletins containing details of groundwater levels and water availability in the river basins. He suggested that ways to bring the Sileru river water to the Krishna delta be explored, and ordered that the Veligonda Stage - I works should be completed by June, 2026. Budameru works At a media briefing, Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu said the Chief Minister sought an action plan to curb the menace of flooding of Vijayawada city by the Budameru rivulet, which included widening the discharge capacity of its diversion channel from the present 17,500 cusecs to 37,500 cusecs. Special Chief Secretaries G. Sai Prasad (Water Resources) and B. Rajasekhar (Agriculture), Chief Commissioner of Land Administration G. Jaya Lakshmi and other senior officials were present.

Reports this week have talked about Samsung finding the Galaxy S25 Edge sale figures lower than its expectations that have already put some question marks over its future prospects. The report here quoting industry sources claims that Samsung has not managed to gather a large crowd for its bold device and could become an ambitious experiment that eventually fails in the market. The Galaxy S25 Edge Conundrum Most people were concerned about the need for the Galaxy S25 Edge version especially with its thin and lightweight design. Granted, the phone has the durability to help you feel confident about its usage but the price tag and some of its limitations because of the size were also going to be questioned. The company usually shares sales figures for new launches that shows its excitement around the product. Samsung has not done that for the Galaxy S25 Edge in its home market or other regions, which tells you something is amiss. We'll probably get a clearer idea in the next few months but early signs are not encouraging to say the least. It seems people are finding the same reasons to look beyond the S25 Edge model, and probably waiting to see what Apple has in store with the rumoured iPhone 17 Air version later this year. Samsung should ideally continue with the Edge moniker for a few years, and maybe reduce its SKUs by replacing the Plus with the Edge variant and see if a newer pricing strategy gathers more buyers. We still find it early to judge a product that only made its way in May 2025. It is also possible that a unique form factor like the S25 Edge needs a different marketing push from the brand and maybe get the device into the hands of the consumers to at least let them experience it in person. Our time with the S25 Edge was surprisingly pleasant thanks to the premium design and flagship cameras.
