Nigeria is preparing to host a national edition of GITEX, one of the world's major technology and innovation events, as part of a push to develop its youth and startup sector. The flagship event is scheduled from September 1 to 4, 2025, in Lagos and Abuja.
The Federal Ministry of Youth Development is partnering with GITEX Global to run a nationwide digital event. Around 300 high-potential startups have been chosen from across Nigeria to gain international exposure, access partnership opportunities, and receive support to scale up.
The initiative builds on the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which currently trains more than seven million young people in digital skills and entrepreneurship. With over 210,000 enrollees and Green House Centres planned in all 774 local government areas, NiYA aims to boost digital skills at the grassroots level.
The programme also includes the GITEX Youth Local Showcase Series – Powered by NiYA, which will link local innovators with global tech ecosystems, including GITEX Africa and GITEX Global.
Dr Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), outlined the scale of the event, which will host more than 1,000 startups, 300 global investors, and up to 20,000 participants.
Speaking at the North-Central edition of the GITEX NIGERIA Startup Regional Roadshow in Abuja, Dr Abdullahi said: 'This Roadshow is not just about recognition. It is about building a bridge between Nigeria's digital talent and immense global opportunities. GITEX is a springboard into the global tech ecosystem.'
Victoria Fabunmi, National Coordinator of the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), said the Roadshow shows NITDA's commitment to helping local technology ventures move 'from local relevance to global relevance.' She added: 'We're excited to be working with the Dubai World Trade Centre to ensure that GITEX is successfully hosted in Nigeria.'
Startups such as Bridge Pay, HiPrep, and BlinkCore Tech Limited pitched their innovations to industry experts, with the best ventures selected for the main September event.
Dr Abdullahi noted Nigeria is the first country to host a national GITEX outside the UAE, marking it as a tech leader in Africa. He encouraged investors and partners to engage with Nigerian innovation and support the country's entry into the global digital economy.
The GITEX NIGERIA 2025 Roadshow will continue across other regions under the theme: 'Unveiling Innovation. Connecting Ecosystems. Showcasing Nigeria to the World.' Tags: AfricaDigitalgitexGITEX NigeriaStartupssummitTechnology

Nigeria Leverages GITEX to Accelerate Tech-Driven Growth, Policy Reform

Rabat – Nigeria is steadily positioning itself as one of Africa's key players in the digital economy, driven by a mix of forward-looking government policies, global tech collaborations, and a dynamic startup scene. With an ambitious goal of reaching a $1 trillion economy by 2030, the country is betting on technology as a catalyst for change, from nurturing talent and expanding digital infrastructure to sparking innovation across industries. The first edition of GITEX NIGERIA, held from September 1-4, in Abuja and Lagos, will offer a platform for local and international decision-makers to align on strategies that shape Nigeria's digital future. The event is led under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with support from the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, alongside the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The Lagos state government also endorses the event, which is organized by KAOUN International, the global name behind GITEX. The conference opens in Abuja with a Government Leadership & AI Summit on September 1, gathering policymakers, tech leaders, and investors to discuss AI deployment and digital infrastructure. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Hon Bosun Tijani, noted in a press statement, Nigeria's ambition to move from consuming technology to producing solutions: 'Our success in AI and digital development will define Nigeria's role in the global economy. GITEX NIGERIA gives us the chance to present our talent, innovation, and ideas to the world.' From September 3-4, Lagos hosts the Tech Expo & Future Economy Conference at the Eko Hotel Convention Center and the Startup Festival at the Landmark Center. Together, these events form West Africa's largest gathering of tech visionaries, investors, and policymakers shaping digital transformation in business, government, and society. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Lagos as a hub for innovation and investment: 'We aim to make Lagos the preferred destination for digital solutions in Africa. GITEX NIGERIA will place our city at the center of the continent's digital future.' NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi called GITEX NIGERIA a catalyst for Africa's technology growth: 'The event represents a milestone in building a digital ecosystem that promotes access to AI technologies, scalable infrastructure, and international competitiveness.' GITEX NIGERIA signals the African nation's determination to employ policy, investment, and diplomacy to assert its status as a continental digital innovation hub. The event is representative of where innovation meets national strategy and reflects the government's ambition to balance economic growth against technological sovereignty. Nigeria's economy went through a positive transformation towards diversifying its heavy reliance on oil revenues. The government is more and more interested in developing industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services, alongside investment-friendly policies to encourage entrepreneurship and foreign direct investment. Such events as GITEX NIGERIA 2025 play a crucial role in this endeavor, uniting policymakers, business leaders, and innovators in an attempt to accelerate digital transformation and unlock Nigeria's capacity to become a technology-powered economic growth hub. GITEX Africa Morocco 2025, held earlier this year, demonstrated the quality of how such a show can propel national and regional digital economies. With more than 1,500 exhibitors and more than 700 startups represented from across the globe, it enabled partnerships in areas of AI, fintech, cybersecurity, and digital health. David Fischer: U.S.-Morocco ties offer example in Africa, Middle East

The strong and centuries-old ties between Morocco and the United States are an example of bilateral relationships in Africa and the Middle East, and can only get stronger going forward, former U.S. ambassador to Morocco, David Fischer, said. "When you think about Morocco and the United States, there can't be a better relationship in Africa [and] in the Middle East," Fischer told MAP on the occasion of the celebration of the Throne Day. This is a 'longstanding and strong' relationship, which is 'just going to be even stronger as we continue forth', Fischer said, adding that the 26th anniversary of the enthronement of HM King Mohammed VI 'really heralds a wonderful time between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.' Fischer said ties between Washington and Rabat reflect a 'long history of deep understanding of trade, of balanced relationships,' adding that 'that's what we build on to go forward.' The U.S. former ambassador hailed Morocco's efforts, under the leadership of HM the King, 'to export a peaceful faith, trying to take the world and calm it down and build on trusted friendships,' in a 'fractious' and 'broken' world that counts 'more fighting than we should have.' Turning to the achievements made in Morocco's Southern Provinces, the diplomat hailed the 'continued investment,' and the 'opportunities' they create. Fischer also noted Morocco's across-the-board progress during HM the King's reign, in fields such as healthcare, education and the business life. 'When you look at Morocco today (...) we are seeing much more opportunity for people than existed 30 years ago.' King Mohammed VI's reign, the ambassador summed, has seen 'strong focus on modernization, social reform, responsible leadership and religious moderation.' This, Fischer continued, has enabled the north-African country to be 'leading the region' and 'strengthened Morocco's role as a key player throughout Africa.' (MAP: 23 July 2025)
