Could a $500 Investment in XRP Turn Into $50,000 by 2030?

Key Points Ripple could easily become one of the best crypto investments of all time. One key risk may prevent all of that upside potential. 10 stocks we like better than XRP › Ripple (CRYPTO: XRP) is skyrocketing in value once again. Over the past 12 months, Ripple's value has zoomed higher by more than 400%. Looking at some key metrics, it's clear that the price of XRP can continue to climb heavily for years on end. But how high could XRP's value really soar? Could a $500 investment turn into $50,000 by 2030? The answer to this question will surprise you. Let's look at the numbers. What is Ripple's highest theoretical value? The primary driver behind Ripple's long-term value is its ability to replace the global SWIFT system. SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication. It's essentially a network of processes and protocols that financial institutions have agreed to in order to standardize money transfers. Since its introduction in 2015, Ripple has struggled to replace the SWIFT system in any meaningful way. It has signed on a growing list of financial institutions that are using its network for pilot programs and smaller transfer use cases. But a decade after Ripple launched, SWIFT remains dominant worldwide. According to Ripple's CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, all of this could change over the next five years. By 2030, he predicts Ripple will capture 14% of SWIFT's global cross-border volume. "There are two parts to SWIFT today: messaging and liquidity," Garlinghouse told a conference audience earlier this year. "I think less about the messaging and more about liquidity. If you're driving all the liquidity, it is good for XRP. So I'll say five years, 14%." It's hard to understate how massive this would be. According to some estimates, a 14% share would result in $21 trillion annual transaction volumes for Ripple. For comparison, RippleNet is currently processing annual transaction volume measured in the billions of dollars, not trillions. If Garlinghouse's prediction comes true, Ripple will go from a rising crypto star to a bonafide global financial powerhouse by the year 2030. Should you buy more XRP today? How will all of this impact XRP's price? Will it be enough to turn a $500 investment into $50,000? It's actually fairly difficult to estimate XRP's value even if it does capture 14% of SWIFT's transaction volumes. That's because the utility value of XRP is based on several complex factors including velocity and liquidity demand. Some analysts have run bear- and bull-case scenarios which predict a theoretical price between $25 and $170, which is significantly higher than today's trading range of $2 to $4. But these assumptions assume Ripple captures 14% of all SWIFT volumes, not just its cross-border volumes. Plus, these assumptions factor in various numbers for velocity and liquidity demand that could stray far from reality. In summary, Ripple remains an incredibly speculative asset. Not only does the project have a long way to go to justify its current $200 billion valuation from a utility standpoint, but models predicting potential price growth for XRP rely on assumptions that are far less knowable than the standard discounted cash-flow model used for valuing traditional stocks. Should you buy more XRP today? If you believe in the long-term story, Ripple remains a promising speculative bet with lots of theoretical upside. But its near-term value will largely be based on market conditions and investor sentiment -- not on true fundamentals. Should you invest $1,000 in XRP right now? Financial crime loopholes in U.S. stablecoin law offer a cautionary tale for Canada

Hoopla over America's new stablecoin law is fuelling fears that Canada is missing out on the latest cryptocurrency boom. The Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act, or the Genius Act, was signed into law by President Donald Trump last week, creating a regulatory framework for stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar. (Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that have values tied to another form of currency or financial asset to maintain steady prices.) A related bill, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, advanced to the U.S. Senate. The Clarity Act for short, it proposes to divvy up regulatory oversight for virtual assets between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The crypto irony: Trump's new laws for stablecoins will only reinforce U.S. dollar dominance At first blush, the U.S. government's 'crypto week' was a resounding success because those two pieces of legislation are helping digital assets go mainstream south of the border. But anti-corruption groups, including Transparency International U.S., are warning the Genius Act and the Clarity Act include loopholes for money laundering and sanctions evasion, a forewarning for other countries, including Canada, as they vie for leadership in the US$5.7-billion global digital asset economy. 'To other countries, I would encourage lawmakers to actually take a risk-based approach and take into consideration that we have a global economy,' said Gary Kalman, executive director of Transparency International U.S., in an interview on Thursday. As Mr. Kalman points out, crypto is not a typical brick-and-mortar business and it carries a higher risk for illicit finance. That's because it is relatively easy to set up offshore crypto-issuing companies that sell into other countries without having a physical presence in those jurisdictions, he said. 'That is the type of risk analysis we would urge other countries to consider when moving forward with legislation,' he added. Transparency International U.S., the Free Russia Foundation, the Financial Accountability and Corporate Transparency Coalition and the Hudson Institute's Kleptocracy Initiative offer a sobering analysis of America's signature stablecoin legislation. 'The risks are real and urgent. Iran, North Korea and Russia have turned to cryptocurrency and stablecoins to bypass international sanctions and move illicit funds,' the anti-corruption groups state in a joint letter to top U.S. congressional leaders, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson. 'If the U.S. does not close the loopholes that can be exploited by these actors, the financial architecture advanced in GENIUS and CLARITY will further accelerate the growth of opaque and lawless financial networks.' Specifically, the groups outlined four key problems with the two pieces of legislation. The first involves the Genius Act's differential treatment of stablecoin issuers registered in the United States versus those based in foreign or offshore jurisdictions. Under the law, foreign stablecoin issuers, such as Tether, the world's largest stablecoin, are able to participate in U.S. markets via decentralized exchanges and peer-to-peer transfers even if they don't register, the groups say. The U.S. Treasury, meanwhile, has the latitude to provide exemptions to foreign issuers, allowing them to participate in centralized exchanges after the expiration of a three-year grace period. As a result, foreign issuers will not receive proper regulatory oversight. A second problem involves the Genius Act's failure to impose anti-money-laundering (AML) and anti-terrorist-financing obligations on secondary-market participants, including digital asset exchanges, custodians and brokers. 'The result is a bill that affirms the status quo while ignoring how kleptocrats, terrorists and other criminal actors access and move digital assets,' states the letter. 'Further, GENIUS weakens compliance by stating that issuers must follow AML rules, only 'as applicable' – a vague and unenforceable standard.' A third weakness involves glaring gaps in sanctions enforcement. Notably, the Genius Act does not apply to anonymizing technologies, such as mixers, and other intermediaries that obscure funding sources, the groups say. The Clarity Act, meanwhile, overlooks sanctions evasion entirely even though digital assets have become a favoured tool of criminals to sidestep economic restrictions. Lastly, exemptions for decentralized services and platforms under the Genius Act, coupled with the Clarity Act's failure to require ownership disclosures from all market participants, will frustrate enforcement of those laws, according to the groups. We won't let Americans buy our biggest bank. Why let them buy our biggest crypto firm? Canada, meanwhile, is facing mounting calls to create its own comprehensive national strategy for crypto, including stablecoins. 'Stablecoins are reshaping global finance, but Canada is still on the sidelines,' states a new report by Western University's Ivey Business School. 'While other countries use them to strengthen payments and attract investment, Canada lacks a homegrown alternative tied to its currency.' The report rightly urges Canada to create a 'unified regulatory framework' for digital assets, noting oversight is currently split among regulators including the Canada Revenue Agency, the Canadian Securities Administrators, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada and provincial agencies. Creating a national regulatory framework should indeed be a priority because businesses need a consistent set of rules. But in doing so, the federal government must draw lessons from America's legislative missteps on financial crime. Canada is already being marketed abroad as a secrecy jurisdiction that can be readily exploited by kleptocrats, money launderers, sanctions evaders and other crooks. In the rush to catch up on crypto, Ottawa cannot afford to replicate Washington's mistakes.

The Second-Largest Crypto in the World Is Up 65% Over the Past Month. Here Are 5 Catalysts Behind the Surge.

Key Points Ethereum ETFs had inflows of $3.5 billion over a 12-day period, a sign of more institutional investment. 10 publicly traded companies now hold Ethereum in their company treasuries. Ethereum has the most activity on its blockchain and is a hub for stablecoins. 10 stocks we like better than Ethereum › Fortunes change quickly in the crypto market. Case in point: Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) has gone from a down year to one of the hottest cryptocurrencies in a matter of weeks. It's up 65% over the last month at the time of this writing (July 22), far outpacing market leader Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). Here's a look at the catalysts that have led to massive gains for Ethereum -- and why it could continue to go even higher. 1. Ethereum ETFs are seeing record inflows The SEC approved the first spot Ethereum ETFs last year, and while they've been successful so far, they really started to take off in the last few weeks. Ethereum ETFs passed their 12th consecutive day of positive inflows on July 21, accumulating $3.5 billion in total net inflows over that period. Bitcoin ETFs, on the other hand, ended a 12-day streak of positive inflows on July 21. And during that time, there were several days when Ethereum ETFs had higher daily inflows than Bitcoin ETFs. These ETF inflows are an indicator of growing interest in Ethereum from institutional investors. Institutional capital has been a key factor in Bitcoin's bull run, and it could do the same for Ethereum. 2. Companies are adding Ethereum to their treasuries Businesses are now buying cryptocurrencies for their corporate treasuries. Bitcoin is the cryptocurrency of choice, as there are currently 40 publicly traded companies holding it, according to CoinGecko. Combined, they hold 4% of the total Bitcoin supply, with a value of $100 billion. But Ethereum is gaining ground among companies that want to have cryptocurrency on their balance sheets. Ten companies are holding a combined $3 billion in Ethereum, including Coinbase, which has about $430 million. Even Bitmine Immersion Technologies, a Bitcoin mining company, has $1.1 billion in Ethereum. The amount of Ethereum held by public companies is still fairly small at less than 1%, so there's plenty of potential growth. 3. It's the most popular blockchain ecosystem Ethereum was the first major blockchain platform with smart contract functionality, giving developers a place to build decentralized apps (dApps) and create new crypto tokens. While many other blockchains have since emerged as competitors to Ethereum, its first-mover advantage has been tremendous. One way to evaluate the success of a blockchain is the total value locked (TVL) into its smart contracts and protocols. Ethereum's TVL is $82 billion, which is 59% of the TVL in the entire crypto market. What's most impressive is how Ethereum has largely been able to maintain its position even with increasing competition. It has generally been responsible for about 50% to 60% of the crypto market's TVL for over three years. 4. Ethereum is also the top blockchain for stablecoins Stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies tied to a fiat currency, have been a hot topic lately. The U.S. passed its first major piece of cryptocurrency legislation, the Genius Act, earlier this month, and it specifically deals with stablecoin regulations. The total combined market cap of stablecoins is on the rise and is now over $250 billion. Stablecoins are issued on blockchain networks, and Ethereum is the most common choice. It's responsible for about half the total stablecoin supply -- some $130 billion. The largest stablecoins operate on Ethereum, including Tether, USDC, and Dai. Since they maintain a consistent value, stablecoins are widely used and have high trading volumes. They also generate substantial transaction fees, and no blockchain benefits more than Ethereum. Over the last year, it has made over $6 billion in fees from Tether alone. 5. It's seen as a more affordable alternative to Bitcoin Bitcoin and Ethereum aren't direct competitors. Bitcoin is a store of value, while Ethereum is a smart contract blockchain, so they serve two very different roles. But some crypto investors look at Ethereum as an alternative to Bitcoin, particularly when they worry that the latter has gotten overvalued. That could be driving investments in Ethereum, along with the reasons above. Bitcoin costs about $120,000 and has a market cap of $2.4 trillion. A common question on crypto forums nowadays is whether it's too late to invest in Bitcoin. Ethereum costs about $3,700 and has a market cap of $450 billion. It also hasn't grown nearly as much as Bitcoin until recently. While both have their merits as crypto investments, there's an argument to be made that Ethereum could have more room to grow at its current value. Should you invest $1,000 in Ethereum right now? Before you buy stock in Ethereum, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Ethereum wasn't one of them.
