Govt accords priority to women's safety, says Sailaja
She was speaking at a district-level awareness programme on Women's Welfare and Empowerment, organised by the Women and Child Welfare Department at SSBN Degree College, Anantapur.
Dr Sailaja highlighted that the government was prioritising women's safety and that the Commission works to prevent atrocities such as child marriage, domestic violence and workplace harassment.
She stated that legal awareness among citizens, especially young women, was essential for building a safer society.
Addressing students, she encouraged them to become aware of their rights and use government platforms like the Shakti app to seek help when needed. 'Don't fall for false promises or get influenced by social media. Stay focused, stay empowered,' she urged.
She added that incidents must not be waited upon — preventive steps are more crucial.
The Commission has been conducting state-wide awareness drives, particularly in Rayalaseema, to address early marriages and harassment of minors.
Dr Sailaja visited stalls set up by the ICDS department, unveiled posters on domestic violence, and stressed the need for Internal Committees in schools, colleges, and workplaces to prevent sexual harassment under the PoSH Act.
She concluded by encouraging women to come forward boldly with complaints, stating that all legal support and protection will be provided. Several women also submitted petitions during the session.
Officials present included Anantapur RDO Keshava Naidu, ICDS project officer Nagamani, DMHO Dr. E B Devi, CI Venkateswarlu, and NGO representatives.

UPSC debars candidate for three years for possession of incriminating material
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has debarred a candidate from appearing in all future examinations for a period of three years after the individual was found in possession of incriminating material during an examination, the Commission said on Friday (July 25, 2025). 'Recently, a candidate was found in possession of incriminating material in one of the UPSC examinations,' the Commission stated. In a post on LinkedIn, UPSC said the candidate was found guilty under Rule 12(1)(h) of the Examination Rules - 'being in possession of or using unfair means during the examination'. 'Accordingly, UPSC has taken stringent disciplinary action in line with standardisation of penalties by cancelling the candidature for the current year's examination and debarred the individual from appearing in all future examination(s)/selection(s) to be conducted by the Commission for a period of three years,' it added. He further said such measures are essential to preserve the sanctity of the selection process and ensure that merit remains the sole criterion for recruitment to government services. Commenting on the action, UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar said, 'UPSC is firmly committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and fairness in its examination processes. Any candidate found guilty of indulging in unfair means or misconduct during examinations faces strict disciplinary action as per rules, including debarment from future examinations, as the strictest action.' 'This is the sole reason why UPSC, for the last 100 years, has been an epitome of merit and a fair system, and candidates from any background can get selected purely on merit basis, as per the selection process,' Mr. Kumar added.

Bengaluru stampede: Event organiser moves HC against judicial commission report
Event management company, DNA Entertainment Networks, has moved the Karnataka High Court (HC) challenging the judicial commission report which holds the company and its officials among those responsible for the June 4 stampede that took place outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ahead of the victory celebrations by IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru leaving 11 people dead. (PTI photo) In the aftermath of the stampede, the Karnataka government had constituted a judicial commission headed by retired high court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha. In his report submitted before the state government earlier this week, Justice D'Cunha's report has blamed the 'reckless' conduct of the organisers, including DNA, RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and certain police officials for the huge crowd that gathered at the stadium gates and the subsequent stampede. The commission report has recommended legal action against them for failing to regulate crowd movement and for inadequate planning. However, DNA has now challenged these findings before the high court, arguing that the tragedy was due to the failure of state authorities, particularly the police, in managing the crowd outside the stadium, which it has claimed was 'beyond the scope' of the company's responsibility. DNA's counsels mentioned the petition on Friday before a bench of Justices Jayant Banerjee and SG Pandit, seeking an urgent hearing and the bench agreed to hear the matter on July 28. It has claimed that it was never provided a copy of the report before its contents were 'leaked to the press,' violating principles of natural justice. 'The fact that the impugned Report is leaked to the press but not given to the Petitioner till date makes it clear that the Respondents have acted in a pre-planned manner with a vendetta,' the plea reads. Further, DNA has accused the Commission of failing to allow its directors to cross examine witnesses, a right guaranteed under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. The company also said that its directors, Venkata Varadhana Thimmaiah and Sunil Mathew, who had appeared before the Commission, and had answered all its questions, realised their statements had been recorded 'inaccurately,' and that their requests to correct these were ignored. The petition contends that the commission submitted its report in undue haste to deflect blame and pacify public anger. The inquiry, it has claimed, was a mere 'eyewash' intended to scapegoat the company.
