THOMAS FRANK has already had that feeling of something Spurs.
Barely getting his feet under the table, at Tottenham, the new gaffer looked certain to get his hand on a trophy.

Leading with goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, Tottenham were just minutes away from adding yet another trophy.
Yet Tottenham's brave resistance was broken when PSG sub Kang-in Lee pulled one back the end and deep into stoppage time, another sub, Goncalo Ramos, sent the match into a penalty shoot-out which Nuno Mendes sealed.
PSG were awful for most of the match but somehow won to add to their Champions League win over Inter Milan.
Yet this was tough on Frank and his team. Particularly Christian Romero who was literally hours into his new role as club captain and looked certain to be holding aloft a piece of silverware.

It might have 'only' been the Uefa Super Cup. It might have been against last season's Champions League winners looked as though they were still on the beach but it would still have been a night bonus to win the match.
Nevertheless, the signs were encouraging. Maybe this is the start of a sparkling new era under Frank who replaced Ange Postecoglou despite guiding the club to success in the Europa League.
Both Spurs goals were from free-kicks, something we did not see much under the stubborn Aussie manager.
Also, Tottenham were terrible at defending set-pieces under Postecoglou because they did not practice but even that looks to have changed as they held firm until the end and were punished for dropping too deeply.

Tottenham fans were already to go into work today joke and joke that they were the best team team in Europe.
But Arsenal fans, who will have been sick to death with Tottenham's gloating, will have enjoyed the moment PSG won the shoot-out in front of the noisy Tottenham fans.

Not forgetting that PSG were not very good, this was nevertheless encouraging from Frank and his team.
Tottenham were organised rather than chaotic. They defended well and broke with intent on the counter-attack.
For Spurs, this was their sixth game of the summer while for PSG, this was their first match as they only returned to training eight days earlier.
Luis Enrique's all-singing, all-dancing team only lost the Club World Cup final against Chelsea a month ago so it would have been naive to have expected Ousmane Dembele and his mates to be bang up for this one, both physically and mentally.
When Tottenham did make mistakes, they were not punished, until right at the end. Maybe old habits die hard but at times, Spurs were too slow in their build-up and this will change under the former Brentford manager.

There was one occasion when Richarlison berated Pedro Porro for not moving the ball quickly, instead playing the ball back to the defence.
As he admitted at his pre-match press conference, keeper Guglielmo Vicario must also become used to being more decisive with his feet to start attacks. While there was one pass which drifted out towards Frank's technical area, there was nothing wrong with the diagonal ball he launched for the opening goal.
Knowing PSG's obvious threat, Frank instructed his team to 5-3-2 when out of possession but when Spurs had the ball, it was more of a 4-3-3 with Djed Spence pushing wide left.
But when PSG had the ball - and that was quite a lot of the time - Spence was back in defence, faced with the not particularly easy job of keeping an eye on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
PSG's sloppiness started in the opening 40 seconds when a stray pass fell to Porro but his potshot dipped over the bar of new keeper Lucas Chevalier

But Chevalier, who is now the chosen one ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma, was not made to work until halfway inside the first half when he tipped over a decent drive from Richarlison.
That chance came from a well-weighted pass by Mohammed Kudus and the £55m arrival from West Ham did look lively when he was given the chance and he had a shot blocked by PSG skipper Marquinhos.
In temperatures of 27C, even though it was nearly 9.30pm local time, both sets of players had a drinks break and Tottenham's fans, encouraged by what they had seen, gave their team a huge cheer.
But that was nothing to the roar when centre-back Van De Ven tucked away the rebound after Chevalier tipped Joao Palhinha's close range shot against the woodwork.
The chance came after PSG failed to clear a long free-kick by Vicario and Romero rose masterfully to head the ball into the area.

Shortly into the second half, Spurs scored again and PSG fans wished they still had Donnarumma in goal.
Romero was left unmarked to connect to Porro's free-kick and Chevalier helped the shot into the net.
In contrast, in a spell of intense PSG pressure, Vicario pulled off a cracking save from Desire Doue and while Bradley Barcola stuck the ball in the net but was offside.
Yet after Enrique made his subs, Lee drilled into the corner from outside the area to pull one back.
And then Dembele crossed for Ramos to get the ball over the line when Spurs were just a couple of minutes away from victory.
The shoot-out looked promising when Vitinha delivered s terrible spot-kick and missed the target but goal hero Van de Ven had his save and Mathys Tel did a little stutter and then struck the ball wide to his left post.
Mendes then struck the shoot-out winner which to be frank, Spurs could not believe. And neither could PSG.

Newcastle complete £43m transfer after taking advantage of Aston Villa issues

Jacob Ramsey has swapped Aston Villa for Newcastle United and will wear the No.41 shirt on Tyneside after the Magpies took advantage of the Villans PSR issues to land the former England Under-21 star Newcastle United have sealed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a £43million deal. Murphy, 24, leaves Villa Park to join the Magpies in a big-money deal that helps Villa meet Profit and Sustainability Rules. ‌ The current campaign is Villa's third successive in European competition, and UEFA rules mean they can only record losses of £60million - far less than the Premier League's guidelines of £105million. They have sold Ramsey to meet that figure, while also bringing down the percentage of revenue they spend on player wages; that number was 91 percent at the start of summer, and needs to get down to below 70 percent. ‌ When the two clubs met in their Premier League opener on Saturday, fans of both united in chanting against the Premier League and football's financial regulations, Newcastle having been forced to sell young stars Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh 12 months ago. ‌ But now Eddie Howe's men have more leeway and have taken full advantage of Villa's situation, paying Villa a guaranteed £39million for Ramsey - who made 167 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, scoring 17 times - with a further £4m in potential add-ons. 'I'm delighted to be here,' said Ramsey. 'It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can 't wait to get started. 'This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really Iiked me, it didn't take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself. 'It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle - the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.' Toon boss Eddie Howe declared: 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt. ‌ 'Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. "He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he'll be a major asset for us.' Ramsey's departure is not a move that Villa boss Unai Emery wanted to happen, but with club chiefs having let it be known that PSR measures had to be adhered to, it was decided cashing in on Ramsey was one of their best options, particularly as they continue looking to bring in more players before the close of the summer window. Keith Andrews given tough lesson as Nottingham Forest start strong

It has been a 'windy road' to the Brentford hot seat, Keith Andrews mused on the eve of the season's kick-off, but many more performances like this will brew a storm the likes of which the former set-piece coach has never seen. Brentford's decision, during a summer of upheaval, to replace Thomas Frank with a managerial novice always appeared brave and, on this evidence, Brentford's faith in their process could face a stern test in the weeks ahead. Nottingham Forest roared into a three-goal first-half lead here, thanks to two strikes from Chris Wood either side of a fine header by debutant Dan Ndoye. Igor Thiago's late penalty gave a sheen of respectability to the scoreline that Brentford, in truth, did not deserve, after a chaotic first-half display. Forest, it should be said, were outstanding, pinning Brentford back into their own defensive third from the start, pressing higher than we were accustomed to last season but typically ruthless in front of goal. Forest's most important piece of business over the summer was arguably holding on to Morgan Gibbs-White, who was in majestic form here. Forest's No10, who was the subject of a £60million bid by Tottenham Hotspur last month, before penning a new three-year contract, was the player who sprinkled the star dust over Forest's full-throttle first-half display, although Elliott Anderson ran him close for player of the match. Brentford only conceded twice from corners during the whole of last season, but five minutes into the Andrews era Wood volleyed in, unmarked, following a mix-up between three defenders, who failed to clear Anderson's delivery. Forest almost doubled the lead four minutes later, after a dizzying exchange of passes between Anderson, Gibbs-White and Ndoye down Forest's right side. Anderson's drive was charged down but Forest suffocated Brentford in the opening stages, and Andrews' side never recovered. Ndoye, who joined from Bologna for £34million in July, was the sole debutant for the home side, and the replacement for Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United for £55million over the summer, in an otherwise familiar line-up. Nuno complained of a lack of options last week, and Forest's failure to bolster his ranks ahead of the club's return to Europe for the first time in three decades. But Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were presented to supporters before kick-off and the Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo is expected to join imminenetly, meaning Forest will have boosted the their attack with almost £100million worth of talent in the space of a few days. As well as losing their head coach, Frank, and four members of his coaching staff, Brentford have lost their captain, Christian Norgaard, to Arsenal. Last season's top goalscorer, Bryan Mbeumo, now plays for Manchester United and their leading scorer in the Premier League, Yoane Wissa, was left out of the squad and is keen to leave the club, too. Brentford's best player, Mikkel Damsgaard, was absent too, owing to the birth of his new baby. Andrews could do nothing about that, of course, just as the former set-piece coach could do nothing about the shambolic defending that preceded Forest's fifth-minute opener. Brentford were calamitous at the back and blunt in attack. They looked like a team bereft of the kind of leadership Jordan Henderson offers, and will surely soon bring to bear on the team for more than the final 21 minutes he played here. Forest's second arrived in the 42nd minute, Gibbs-White performing a delightful pirouette to steal a few yards of space 25 yards from goal, before clipping a left-footed cross on to the head of Ndoye, who guided the ball back across goal beyond the helpless debutant, Caoimhin Kelleher. Forest's supporters were given their first glimpse of Ndoye's trademark celebration, the 24-year-old mimicking a growling cat displaying its claws, and the Switzerland winger will hope this was the first of many. Five minutes later, it was three and, once again Brentford were architects of their own downfall. The brilliant Anderson pounced on Sepp van den Berg's loose pass from defence into midfield, before essaying a beautifully weighted first-time pass into the path of Wood — an early contender for assist of the season. Last season's 20-goal top scorer rounded Kelleher, rolled the ball into the empty net and, since Nuno took over at Nottingham Forest, only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak have scored more Premier League goals the New Zealander (33). Brentford's first shot on goal did not arrive until the 23rd minute, Yehor Yarmoliuk gathering possession after a Gibbs-White slip inside the Forest half before forcing a strong right-handed save by Matz Sels. Their best chance of the afternoon arrived moments before Forest's third, Rico Henry darting to the byline before cutting back for Thiago, but the Brentford striker — making his first Premier League start following an injury-blighted 12 months — blazed over from eight yards. Brentford's 78th-minute goal from the penalty spot, after Ibrahim Sangaré handled in the box, was little more than a consolation. Thiago rolled in his first goal for the club since joining from from Club Bruges last summer, but for Andrews and Brentford there is much to ponder.
