Beijing white paper outlines China's trade stance before retaliatory strike on US

China has unveiled a comprehensive framework reaffirming its stance on trade ties with the United States, warning that its tariffs would 'ultimately backfire', while still leaving the door open for 'equal-footed dialogue' between the countries.

The white paper, released by the State Council Information Office on Wednesday against the backdrop of an escalated trade war, outlines China's position on key issues – highlighting the 'mutually beneficial nature' of China-US trade; voicing support for free trade; warning against the harms of unilateralism and protectionism; and urging dialogue to resolve disputes.
'History and reality have shown that raising tariffs will not solve the US' own problems,' China's Ministry of Commerce said in a response released along with the white paper on Wednesday, urging Washington to immediately lift 'unilateral measures' and enhance dialogue.
'Instead, it triggers market volatility, fuels inflation in the US, erodes its industrial base, and increases the risk of its economic recession – ultimately, the US will only suffer the consequences itself.'
The document was released before China announced the imposition of a fresh 50 per cent tariff on all American imports in response to a 50 per cent tariff hike on its goods from US President Donald Trump.
For other countries, this is an important assurance and stance to stabilise the global trade situation
Xu Weijun, South China University of Technology
This is the third time since the trade war erupted in 2018 that China has issued a white paper, according to Xu Weijun, a researcher with the South China University of Technology's Institute of Public Policy in Guangzhou, adding that 'the intended audience is not just the US'.

US immigration: ‘anti-American' views on social media to factor into decisions

US President Donald Trump's administration said on Tuesday it would look for 'anti-American' views, including on social media, when deciding on the right to live in the United States. US Citizenship and Immigration Services, which handles requests to stay in the United States or become a citizen, said it would expand vetting of the social media postings of applicants. 'America's benefits should not be given to those who despise the country and promote anti-American ideologies,' agency spokesman Matthew Tragesser said in a statement. 'Immigration benefits - including to live and work in the United States - remain a privilege, not a right.' The US Immigration and Nationality Act, which dates back to 1952, defines anti-Americanism which at the time primarily focused on communists. But the Trump administration has already moved aggressively to deny or rescind short-term visas for people deemed to go against US foreign policy interests, especially on Israel.

Zelensky gifts Trump a golf club owned by Ukraine war veteran

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave US counterpart Donald Trump a golf club during his visit to Washington this week that had belonged to a serviceman fighting Russia's invasion, Kyiv said on Tuesday. Advertisement Trump, an avid golfer who owns several courses, accepted the gift and presented Zelensky with symbolic keys to the White House in return, the Ukrainian leader's office said. The warm exchange marks a stark turnaround from February, when Zelensky left the White House early following a televised shouting match with Trump and US Vice-President J.D. Vance Since that tense encounter, Zelensky has sought to repair ties, flattering Trump in public appearances and praising his efforts to secure peace. 'The president of Ukraine presented the president of the United States with a golf club,' Zelensky's office said on Tuesday. Advertisement The club previously belonged to Kostiantyn Kartavtsev – a Ukrainian soldier who 'had lost a leg in the first months of Russia's full-scale invasion while saving his brothers-in-arms', the office said. Zelensky showed Trump a video of Kartavtsev, it said.

US names five more Chinese industries for enforcement under Uygur labour law

The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday it is designating five new Chinese industry sectors, including copper, lithium and steel, for 'high priority' enforcement under a human rights law restricting imports from China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Advertisement Tuesday's updated list also names caustic soda – a chemical used in textiles and detergents – and red dates, bringing the total number of high-priority sectors targeted under the law to 12. 'America has a moral, economic and national security duty to eradicate threats that endanger our nation's prosperity, including unfair trade practices that disadvantage the American people and stifle our economic growth,' Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. 'The use of slave labour is repulsive and we will hold Chinese companies accountable for abuses and eliminate threats its forced labour practices pose to our prosperity,' she added. Advertisement Beijing has repeatedly denied all allegations of forced labour in Xinjiang, lumping them together with US accusations of 'genocide' in the region as 'lies of the century'.
