Beijing white paper outlines China's trade stance before retaliatory strike on US

China has unveiled a comprehensive framework reaffirming its stance on trade ties with the United States, warning that its tariffs would 'ultimately backfire', while still leaving the door open for 'equal-footed dialogue' between the countries.

The white paper, released by the State Council Information Office on Wednesday against the backdrop of an escalated trade war, outlines China's position on key issues – highlighting the 'mutually beneficial nature' of China-US trade; voicing support for free trade; warning against the harms of unilateralism and protectionism; and urging dialogue to resolve disputes.
'History and reality have shown that raising tariffs will not solve the US' own problems,' China's Ministry of Commerce said in a response released along with the white paper on Wednesday, urging Washington to immediately lift 'unilateral measures' and enhance dialogue.
'Instead, it triggers market volatility, fuels inflation in the US, erodes its industrial base, and increases the risk of its economic recession – ultimately, the US will only suffer the consequences itself.'
The document was released before China announced the imposition of a fresh 50 per cent tariff on all American imports in response to a 50 per cent tariff hike on its goods from US President Donald Trump.
For other countries, this is an important assurance and stance to stabilise the global trade situation
Xu Weijun, South China University of Technology
This is the third time since the trade war erupted in 2018 that China has issued a white paper, according to Xu Weijun, a researcher with the South China University of Technology's Institute of Public Policy in Guangzhou, adding that 'the intended audience is not just the US'.

National Guard troops arrive in Los Angeles at Trump's orders amid immigration protests

National Guard troops began arriving in Los Angeles on Sunday amid a mounting face-off between city residents, its Democratic mayor and California Governor Gavin Newsom with US President Donald Trump over protests against immigration raids. Advertisement The responsible regional command of the US military wrote on social media that some troops are 'already on the ground'. It did not specify how many soldiers were involved. Photos attached to the social media post showed two soldiers in combat gear with automatic weapons and a military vehicle, as well as another group of around 30 soldiers. Protests began in the city on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers executed search warrants across the city as Trump pushes forward with his goal of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants using military force. On Saturday, Trump signed a memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen 'to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester', the White House said. Advertisement Adam Schiff, one of California's two Democratic senators, called the move 'unprecedented', saying Trump could use the volatile situation to declare martial law.

UK vows due diligence on Chinese embassy in London amid security concerns

The UK government promised to assess any security concerns related to the construction of a Chinese embassy near the City of London, an issue that could potentially complicate trade talks with the United States. President Donald Trump has warned Prime Minister Keir Starmer against letting China set up a 'mega-embassy' near the country's key financial centres, after the plan was revived following personal lobbying by President Xi Jinping , the Sunday Times reported. The issue has been raised in trade negotiations between the United States and UK, according to the newspaper. In response to questions about the report, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle told Sky News the UK will offer a 'fulsome response' to any security issues. Those issues will be 'taken care of assiduously', he said. These are 'the issues we talk about as two countries all the time', Kyle said. 'But just to reassure people, we deal with embassies and these sorts of infrastructure issues all the time,' he said. 'We're in the Five Eyes agreement, America and Britain share intelligence. If people raise security issues even though it relates to planning, then I'm sure we will have a fulsome response for them.

Photo: AFP A Colombian right-wing presidential candidate who was shot during a campaign event in Bogota has successfully undergone initial surgery, the city's mayor said on Sunday. 39-nine-year-old senator Miguel Uribe was speaking to supporters in the capital when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee before being detained. A security guard managed to detain the suspected attacker, a minor who is believed to be 15 years old. Uribe was airlifted to hospital in "critical condition" and underwent a "neurosurgical" and "peripheral vascular procedure," the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota confirmed. He "overcame the first surgical procedure," Bogota mayor Carlos Fernando Galan told media, adding that he had entered "the critical hours" of recovery. His wife, in an audio recording shared with media, said "he came out well from the surgery." The motive for the attack is not yet publicly known. Colombia's defense minister Pedro Sanchez vowed to use law enforcement's full capabilities and offered a roughly US$725,000 reward for information about who was behind the shooting. In a video address to the nation posted on social media, President Gustavo Petro also promised investigations to find the perpetrators of the "day of pain". "What matters most today is that all Colombians focus with the energy of our hearts, with our will to live ... on ensuring that Dr Miguel Uribe stays alive." Uribe, a strong critic of Petro, is a member of the Democratic Center party, which announced last October his intention to run in the 2026 presidential election. Authorities said there was no specific threat made against the politician before the incident. Like many public figures in Colombia, Uribe had close personal protection. The country is home to several armed guerrilla groups, powerful cartels and has a long history of political violence. (AFP)
